REV. DR. JOHN WILLIAM STEVENS EYRRICK

Montgomery, N.Y. - The Reverend Dr. John William Stevens Eyrrick, an Episcopal priest and retired Senior Chaplain at Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center, entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at his home in Montgomery. He was 71. Born on March 25, 1933 to the late John Eurich and Helen Stevens Eurich in Goshen, he was a veteran of the Korean War and a charter member of the Montgomery, New York post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a graduate of William's College and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and held an MA degree from Middlebury and a doctorate in the Sociology of Religion and Education from Vanderbilt University. Father Eyrrick was a man of deep compassion and vision. He used his position as Dean at Goddard College to establish the Goddard Experimental Program for Further Education, a degree granting program which honored life experience toward academic credit. This program was extended from Vermont to South Carolina and is commonly held in high regard today. As the Director of Pastoral Services at Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center he organized a comprehensive system for the delivery of spiritual services to the patients. He established clinical training programs for Carmelite novices and deacons in the Episcopal church. He served on a number of committees including the MICA Task Force and Steering Committee, the Committee for the Identification of Low-Functioning Patients and the Patient Privileging Committee. Father Eyrrick was an active member of the New York State Chaplains Association where he served as pastor at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Greenwood Lake. In 1980 he joined the Board of Directors of Emergency Housing Group, Inc. which at the time was a fledgling agency serving the homeless of Orange County. In 1993 he was elected President of the Board and under his leadership the Agency was strengthened and expanded its services to include the Middletown Addictions Crisis Center, the Adult and Family Shelters, Aftercare Services and A Friend's House, Orange County's only Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter. His philosophy of service is clear from an address he made, as President of Emergency Housing Group, Inc., to the County in July of 1994. In part he said: "We've assisted all kinds of people in finding the help they've needed to start again. They are not simply given food and shelter but direction, advocacy, referrals and a shoulder to cry on. All of this is necessary because a housing crisis is generally a life crisis and always involves our emotions, our coping strategies, our self identity and brings to the fore whatever other problems we may have. Our goal is to help each of our clients learn to cope more efficiently so that they won't need us again. We try to do what we would want done for us in the same circumstances." Survivors include his son, Brandon Eyrrick and his wife, Camrin Eyrrick; grandchildren, Jacob and Kaitlyn Eyrrick; brother, Robert Eurich, his aunt, Lydia; care-giver, Clarence Wright; and many cousins.
