Mr. Robert Lee Mathias, age 86 of Gloversville, died Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville.

He was born July 24, 1922 in Gloversville, the son of Lee A. Mathias and Stephine Havel Mathias. A graduate of Gloversville High School, Bob also graduated from a 2-year technical school. He served with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific Theatre from 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Mathias was a self-employed carpenter who also worked for several area contractors over the years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, VFW Post #2077, Gloversville American Legion Post and the Local #370 Carpenters Union. He was a former member of the Ancient Order of Foresters and the Eagles Aerie. He was the last surviving Charter Member of the Pleasant Square Fire Dept.

Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved to spend time at his camp in Wells.

Mr. Mathias was married to Marie Ellen Madden on July 15, 1944. Mrs. Mathias died January 4, 2005.

Survivors include four children: Sandra Lunkenheimer (Gary) of Gloversville, Michael Mathias of the U.A.E; Annmarie Ingram (H. William) of Gloversville and Daniel R. Mathias (Deborah) of Hagaman; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive relatives and friends and from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 13th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. The Rev. Kenneth Swain will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the Pleasant Square Fire Dept.

Robert J. Sturgess, Sr.

Mr. Robert J. Sturgess, Sr; age 69 of Gloversville (Town of Mayfield), went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Saratoga Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born March 18, 1939 in Gloversville, the son of the late Benjamin Sr. and Jennie Tortorello Sturgess. He was employed as depot manager by AmeriPride Services Inc. from 1963 until his retirement in 2001.

Bob was a former member of the Independent Bowling League, and he also enjoyed fishing, golf, family picnics, woodworking, poker and family vacations to Cape Cod.

He was married on October 10, 1959 to Barbara J. Lathrop who survives. Also surviving are four children: Robert Sturgess, Jr; Jill R. Green (Ron), Kim A. Samples (John Jr.) and Jeanie L. Pavlus (Brett) all of Gloversville; two brothers: Danny Sturgess (Donna) of California and Tony Sturgess (Arlene) of Gloversville; two sisters: Janet Willet (John) and Kathy Sturgess of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren: Chris, Rene, Beth, R.J; Erica, Johnny, Jacob, Abbie, Tyler, Austin and Luke; two great-grandchildren: David and Alyssa; an aunt, Amelia Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Samples and a brother, Benjamin "Bud" Sturgess, Jr; whose wife Paula survives.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St; Broadalbin. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Broadalbin Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Blanc officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Esmerelda Fear
Born in Gloversville, NY on Mar. 9, 1914
At Rest Oct. 11, 2008 and resided in Gloversville, NY.

Mrs. Esmerelda "Essie" Fear, 94, formerly of Gloversville, died Saturday at Wells Nursing Home, where she had been a patient since 2006. Born March 9, 1914 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary DeGaro Russo. Mrs. Fear was educated in Johnstown schools and employed at Cresendoe Glove Co. for nineteen years, retiring in 1978.She had also been a part-time cafeteria aide at Park Terrace school for several years.

A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, she was also a member of the Rosary Society and the Ida McGinnis senior citizens. Essie was married September 19, 1936 to William H. Fear who pre-deceased her in 1986.
She is survived by her sons; William (Delia) Fear of Gloversville and Donald W. (Linda) Fear of Port Jefferson, Long Island. Mrs. Fear is also survived by her sister, Marie Lynch of Gloversville a brother John Russo of Wilmington, Delaware, her grandchildren; Christine and Craig Fear, several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brothers; Dominic, Roland, Edward, William, James, Charles and a second brother Charles Russo.

A prayer service will be held 9:15 am Wednesday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, followed at 10 am by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-7 pm. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens, 35 Church St. Gloversville, N.Y. 12078 or to the Wells Nursing Home activities, 201 W. Madison Ave. Johnstown, N.Y. 12095.

Norma J. Claus
Born in Broadalbin, New York on Nov. 27, 1927
At Rest Oct. 15, 2008 and resided in Mayfield, NY.

Norma Claus, 80, passed away Wednesday October 15, 2008 at her home in Mayfield after a short illness.
Born in Broadalbin on November 27, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Harold and Marion Wilder. She married Robert Claus on April 3, 1954. They shared 38 years together in marriage until his death in 1992.
Norma previously worked at the Fulton Co. Residential Healthcare Facility. She enjoyed babysitting and taking trips with her good friends Sandy Ernest and Victoria Wheaton.
Survivors include three daughters: Vicky Simonds and her husband Keith of Gloversville, Joanne Claus of South Carolina and Jennifer Claus of Mayfield; three sons: Robert Claus and his wife Susan, Richard Claus and Karl Claus and his companion Maureen McGraff, all of Gloversville; a brother Harold Wilder of Canandaigua, NY; a step-daughter, Carol Duesler-Matiasovic; eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a step-son, Larry Claus and three sisters: Virginia Cline, Kate Wassel and Shirley Knowlton.
At the convenience of the family there will be a graveside service in Union Rural Cemetery in Mayfield. Donations may be made in Norma's memory to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home in Gloversville.

James T. Dye
Born in London, England on May 22, 1928

James T. Dye
Mr. James T. Dye, age 80 of Gloversville, entered into eternal rest to be with his extended family on Monday morning, October 13, 2008 at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville. Jim had fought a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 22, 1928 in London, England, one of seven children to the late Harry and Sarah Dye. He married Erica G. Young on April 9, 1950 and they crossed the ocean to Gloversville in October of 1952. Jim first worked at the former Sands Food and Garden Center in Johnstown. In 1953 he began his career at the Gloversville Dept. of Public Works where he retired as superintendent in 1985 following 32 years of service.

He was of Episcopalian faith. Jim enjoyed watching and listing to the Lawrence Welk Show and its champagne music.

Jim is survived by his wife Erica, also by three children: Susan L. Maryanopolis (James), Terry J. Dye (Sharon) and Brian T. Dye, all of Gloversville; three grandchildren: Jennifer Maryanopolis, Nicholas Maryanopolis and Sara Dye.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Dr. R. W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
