Sonia Hichens, age 69, of Gloversville passed away on Tuesday October 25, 2011 at her home in Gloversville.
She was born in Gloversville, NY on November 29, 1941 the daughter of the late Charles and Marie (Maloney) Fremmer.
Sonia graduated from the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing and went on to work for Marcy State Hospital followed by Ellenville Community Hospital where she had the honor to give a tour of the hospital to President Lyndon B. Johnson on August 19, 1966. Following her time at Ellenville, Sonia moved back to Gloversville and went to work for Dr. Alex Yvars for 30 years. Her last place of employment was for the Gloversville School District as a School Nurse, where she enjoyed and took great pride in taking care of the children at the school.
Sonia was a longtime Girl Scout where she received the highest rank. She was Matron of the Eastern Star as well as Cub Scout Pack 20 Den Leader for nearly 20 years. She loved crafts of all kinds as well as stained glass.
Sonia is survived by her three children: Renee Broadwell (Jacob) of Mill Point, NY, Alicia Hichens-Smith (Joe) of Mayfield, Alvin Hichens III (Audrey) of Gloversville, a sister, Colleen Dengler (Steven), six grandchildren: Erica, A.J., Morgan, Asenath, Mekenzie, Hailey, two nieces: Emmy, Elizabeth and a nephew, Adam.
In addition to her parents, Sonia was preceded by a son Dwayne Broadwell.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Sonia's caregiver Sandy Mullaney as well as the friends and neighbors of North Water Street in Gloversville for their care and support.
Family and friends are invited and may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 28, 2011 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 29, 2011 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Sonia to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Gwendolyn M. Miller
Born in Orange, NJ on Feb. 13, 1925
At Rest Oct. 25, 2011 and resided in Mayfield, NY.

Mrs. Gwendolyn M. Miller, age 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at her home in Mayfield.

She was born February 13, 1925 in Orange, NJ, the daughter of the late Samuel and Gwendoline Brownbridge Laverty. She came to Mayfield in 1946 from New Jersey. She was employed at the family run Stephen Miller General Contractors, Inc. in Mayfield and was a member of the Johnstown Senior Citizens Club. Gwendolyn was an avid Yankees fan, loved going to the Saratoga Racino and enjoyed playing pinochle. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Gwendolyn was married to Verl Miller on December 28, 1946. He died July 16, 1971. Survivors include: three children, Rebecca Schwed (John), Stephen Miller (Mary) and Pamela G. Miller; nine grandchildren, Todd, Michelle, Patricia, Rebecca, Garry, Ann, Nicholas, Matt and Alexandra and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Joan Morra, and her brother, Jack Laverty.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service which will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30 at Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield, with the Rev. David C. Newkirk officiating. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Eleanor B. Gordon
Born in Watertown, NY on Nov. 18, 1946
At Rest Oct. 26, 2011 and resided in Gloversville, NY.

Eleanor B. Gordon (Mooney), 64, of Gloversville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 26 with her loving family at her side.
She was born November 18, 1946, in Watertown, the daughter of the late Joseph and June (Woodrad) Castrucci.
Eleanor lived and was educated in St. Johnsville for most of her early life.
She was employed at Tic Tac Toe in Gloversville for over thirty years, retiring at the onset of illness.
On October 30, 1993, Eleanor married Bernard "Bernie" Gordon, who survives. They shared over seventeen years together.
Eleanor enjoyed playing games on the computer, jigsaw puzzles and bowling. Most of all, she loved spending time with her precious family- especially during the holidays. She will be very sadly missed by many.
In addition to her beloved husband, Bernie Gordon of Gloversville, survivors include a daughter, Michelle Ippoliti (Bruce) of Gloversville; a son, Michael Mooney (Cathy) of Gloversville; four grandchildren: Tiffany Cowles, Joseph Cowles, Samantha Kuchman and her "precious boy" Makoa Skinner and a son in law, Harry Kuchman of Salisbury Center.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Cowles-Kuchman.
In keeping with Eleanor's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.

Walter J. Kristie
Born in St. Clair, Pennsylvania on Jun. 8, 1913
At Rest Oct. 26, 2011 and resided in Liberty, SC.

Walter John Kristie , 98, of Nealy Street Liberty, S.C., passed away Wednesday morning after a brief illness.
Born June 8, 1913, in St. Clair, PA, the son of the late Charles and Helen Rutkauckas Kristie (Kristaponis). Walter was married to the former Mary (Marion) Kadzis May 29, 1938.
Walt began a long career in 1929 at Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam NY, moving to Liberty SC in 1968 when the company relocated there. He retired in 1978.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne R. Kristie, Easley, SC and Gerald W. (Mary Lou) Kristie, Amsterdam, NY. Three grandchildren, Brad G. Kristie, Amsterdam, NY, Elizabeth M. (Scott) Fecteau, Portland, CT, Alison A. (Paul) Ciarlante, Salt Point, NY. Three great-grandchildren, Nathan S. and Benjamin R. Fecteau and Olivia J. Weeks-Kristie, sisters in law Mildred Whelly and Frances DiBartolomeo both of Amsterdam and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary K. Kristie on December 31, 2009, grandson Brendon G. Kristie on June 13th of this year, infant granddaughter Amy Kathryn Kristie, parents Charles Kristie and Helen Zyzes, stepfather Walter Zyzes, brothers Matthew Kristie, Felix and Edward Zyzes
While living in Amsterdam he was a member of St. Casimir's Church, and following their move south, Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pickens, SC and the Knights Of Columbus at the church.
He was an avid golfer into his 98th year. In his youth Walt played basketball for the ALC team in Amsterdam. He was a wonderful and caring husband, a loving father and wonderful grandfather. Walt had a positive and caring nature- to him his glass was always "half full".
A prayer service will take place Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating. Interment will follow in St. Casimir's Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, Nov. 1st from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. A Mass will be offered at Holy Cross Church in Pickens S.C. at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Upstate, in South Carolina in care of the funeral home office.

Mary J. Strait
Born in Gloversville on Dec. 24, 1955

Mary J. Strait, 55, of Gloversville, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011.
She was born December 24, 1955 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Alfred and Betty (Whitney) Blodgett.
She was employed as a sewing machine operator for Johnstown Knit.
On October 11, 1980 she married Paul Strait, who survives. They shared just over thirty one years together.
Mary was a good person with a great sense of humor. She enjoyed the outdoors and cared deeply for animals. Most of all, she loved being with family and friends.
Family and friends are invited and may call Wednesday, November 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, NY 12078. Interment will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Suite 204, Albany, NY 12205.
