Mr. Conroy L. Beebie, age 90, of Gloversville, died Wednesday evening, September 28, 2011 at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville.

He was born August 13, 1921 in Moorse, NY, the son of the late Abel and Mary Beebie. Conroy graduated from Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburg and Plattsburg State College where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Education. He later received his Masters in Education from Syracuse University. Conroy served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1944 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Beebie came to Gloversville in 1946 and taught 7th grade at the Estee Junior High School. He became Principal of the Lexington Avenue School in 1947 followed by McNab School, Kingsboro Avenue School, Park Terrace School and finally for over 20 years at Boulevard School where he retired in 1986 following 40 years of service to the district.

In 1950 Mr. Beebie's name was submitted for membership to the Gloversville Lions Club. He passed through the required offices and became President for the 1964-65 year. He was elected Zone Chairman in 1966-67 and remained active afterwards on several committees. He was elected District 20-Y2 Governor in 1969 and attended the International Convention in Tokyo, Japan for 13 days. He and 32, 000 Lions from all over the world paraded down the streets of Tokyo. In 1986-87 he served as President of the P.D.G. State Organization of Governors and International Counselors of New York State and Bermuda. In 1987 Conroy received the International Presidents Award for rendering outstanding service to the International Lions Association. His most cherished award was the Melvin Jones Fellow presented to him by District 20-Y2.

Conroy was one of four Lions to help raise $1 Million to start The Lion Eye Institute of Albany. His dedication knew no bounds. He was well-known for his countless acts of kindness to his family, students, teachers and anyone else who needed a helping hand. In his younger years he would be called in the middle of the night to transport eyes to Albany Medical Center for transplant that would result in someone being able to see again. He touched thousands of lives and was truly a dedicated humanitarian.

In the early 1970's he was an important part of creating The Big Brothers Program. In the 1980's he served as Director of The Head Start Program and helped to form policies and procedures still in use today.
Mr. Beebie was a member of The Church of the Holy Spirit where he sang in the choir for many years, was Past-President of the Holy Name Society for many years and a former member of the Parish Council. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling and singing.

Conroy was dedicated to his entire family, especially to his wife, Marjorie Lou "Margie" Ganster, who died September 20, 1997. He is survived by: three children, Janice Wenskoski, Thomas Beebie (Michelle) and Craig J. Beebie (Rosemary), all of Gloversville; a brother, Peter Beebie (Theresa) of Plattsburg; five grandchildren, Christopher Wenskoski (Jennifer), Andrew Wenskoski (Fiancée Kari Bezio), Daniel Beebie, Stephen Beebie and Shawn Beebie; three great-grandchildren, Christian Wenskoski, Riley Wenskoski and Makenna Wenskoski; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Earl Beebie, Kenneth Beebie, Floyd Beebie and Douglas Beebie.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 2 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted 9:15 a.m. Monday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to The Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville or to the Gloversville Lions Club, P.O. Box 8, Gloversville or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.

The Holy Name Society of The Church of the Holy Spirit will conduct its prayers at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home, immediately followed by a Lions Club Service.

Margaret Peters
Born in Little Falls, NY on Jul. 13, 1919

Margaret "Peg" Peters, 92, of Gloversville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown.
She was born in Little Falls, NY. on July 13, 1919, the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Irene (Leahy) Fox.

Peg attended business school in Utica, where she also studied professional vocal for several years. Before moving to Gloversville in 1947, She was manager of Montgomery Ward department store in Little Falls. She later worked for Nathan Littauer Hospital in the "ER." She retired with over 20 years of employment, a job she truly enjoyed.

Peg was generous with her time and spirit to others. She was an active member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was involved with the Girl Scouts of America and was a Brownie and Scout leader for many years. Peg was a loving mother and grandmother and her greatest joy was spending time with her family. The name "Nana" was not just reserved for her grandchildren, but for the many neighborhood children she adored as well. Peg loved flowers and always had beautiful gardens that gave her and her wonderful neighbors great pleasure. She enjoyed dining out, traveling, and she especially loved Cape Cod.

In addition to her loving daughters, Susan Ramos of Gloversville and Mary Gancarz of Broadalbin, Peg is survived by her granddaughter Kara Gancarz of Broadalbin, grandson Matthew Ramos of Gloversville, one brother Robert (Bob) Fox of Pittsfield, MA, a stepsister Shirley McDermott of Albany, NY and three beloved nieces, Mary Beth Evers (Edward) of Mechanicville, NY, Patricia (Patty) Hull (Steve) of Grand Lake, OK, and Suzanne Nolan (Robert) of Ossining, NY.

She was predeceased by her sister Esther Fox, step-mother Frieda Fox, sister-in-law Louise Fox, and brother-in-law Joseph McDermott.

There will be no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family at the St. Johnsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to your local Humane Society or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville.

Victor Rimkus
Born in Lithuania on Feb. 10, 1930

Mr. Victor Rimkus, 81, of Surprise Arizona, passed away September 19, 2011 at the Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.
Born on February 10, 1930 in Lithuania. The son of Antanas and Marcele Rimkus. His family left Lithuania and lived in Germany for a short time. With the help of relatives in the United States the family came to America in October of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He was employed at the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady. Wanting to improve his future, Victor enrolled in Hudson Valley Technical Institute for two years.
He was hired by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady as an Engineering Assistant. In the fall of 1956, Victor enrolled in Union College in Schenectady. While at Union he worked part time at G.E. and graduated from Union College in 1961. That same year, he was transferred to Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. KAPL had a continuing engineering program. He received his Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from RPI. While at Kapl and G.E. his career was in the nuclear reactor servicing equipment. Victor retiried from G.E. February 1992. In 2003 Vic and his wife moved to Arizona
Survivor's include his wife Gerladine Rimkus of Surprise, Arizona. His daughter Tricia Kodd Kropel of San Diego, CA. Richard Rimkus of Phoenix, Arizona. He left four grandchildren. Ryan, Charlie and Abby Kroepel and Ethan Rimkus.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday October 8, 2011 at 11:00A.M. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main St., Amsterdam, NY with Father John Medwid as celebrant. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Chapel at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Christine Matuk-Lockwood
Born in Yonkers on Jan. 10, 1968

Christine Matuk-Lockwood, 43, of Ft. Johnson, passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 26, 2011.
She was born January 10, 1968, in Yonkers, the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ruth Mary (Faingnaert) Humphrey.
Christine earned her A.A.S at Fulton Montgomery Community College and then her Bachelor's Degree of Science at Nyack College. She was a self-employed career consultant, helping countless people.
On November 19, 2005, she married Norman Lockwood, who survives.
Christine was a young spirited, kind hearted and generous woman with a great sense of humor. She always placed others ahead of herself, and went above and beyond to help anybody no matter what the situation. She was very active in donating to the ASPCA and the Disabled Veterans. Christine was awarded the title of Top Job Developer for the State of New York. She was an amazing lady who will be sadly missed by many.
In addition to her beloved husband, Norman, of Ft. Johnson, survivors include two daughters: Jessica Matuk (Michael Brosch) and Catherine Matuk (Lucas Clouthier), both of Ft. Johnson; two granddaughters: Ava Brosch and Baylei Clouthier; two uncles: David Faingnaert (Paula) of Yonkers and Daniel Faingnaert (Marilyn) of PA and several wonderful friends.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m. at the family's residence. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Freomnt Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.

Dorothy K. Schanthal
Born in Herkimer, NY on Oct. 25, 2011

Dorothy K. Schanthal, age 88, of Johnstown, NY passed away on Monday October 24, 2011 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
She was born in Herkimer, NY on May 18, 1923 the daughter of the late Earl and Rena (Burt) Kirby.
On April 19, 1947, Dorothy married Charles F. Schanthal. They shared 64 years united in marriage.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time at their camp on Lake Pleasant, knitting and crocheting, playing many varieties of card games and traveling to visit family members.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by two sons: Timothy C. Schanthal (Marianne), Michael F. Schanthal (Jean), six grandchildren: Kristen Schanthal, Jacque Dzikowski, Donia Schanthal Zilles, Courtney Schanthal, Lauren Schanthal, Kacey Schanthal and three great grandchildren: Joshua Dzikowski, Jonathan Zilles and Landon Pitcher.
Additional survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by and infant son, Kevin J. Schanthal as well as her 8 siblings: Marguerite Tanner, Stanley Kirby, George Kirby, Frances Myrus, Doris Peknik, Ruth Hammond, Helen Williams and James Kirby.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday October 28, 2011 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams Officiating. Friends are invited and may call one hour prior to the funeral service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dorothy to the American Heart Association; 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
