Virginia R. Moore

ONEONTA — Virginia R. Moore, 77, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1924, in Hobart, the daughter of Lauren and Rose (Warner) Merwin.

She married George E. Moore on Oct. 1, 1942, and he passed away on Dec. 25, 1972.

Virginia retired from FN Burt Co. in 1986, where she was employed for 11 years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Oneonta Women of the Moose Chapter 1461 and the Oneonta Eagles Auxiliary.

Virginia is survived by two sons, Dennis G. Moore of Northfield, Ohio, and Anthony D. Moore of Elyria, Ohio; a daughter, Susan Reiners of Saratoga Springs; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani, associate pastor officiating.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in the spring.

Friends may call on Friday evening at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thelma S. Stever

NELLISTON — Mrs. Thelma S. Stever, 81, of Nelliston, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at St. Johnsville Nursing Home following a long illness.

She was born in Woodbourne on July 16, 1920, to Charles Brundage and Bessie Baldwin Brundage.

She was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School, Class of 1940.

She married Franklin K. Stever on Oct. 7, 1961, in Cherry Valley.

Mrs. Stever was employed as a machine operator in the Strained Food Department at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie for 41 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Beech-Nut's 25 Year Club.

She was also a member of Canajoharie United Methodist Church, and its women's group.

In addition to her husband, Franklin K. Stever, of Nelliston, she is survived by a sister Velma B. Flint, of Cherry Valley; two brothers, Harvey J. Brundage and Vernooy D. Brundage, both of St. Johnsville; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the chapel of Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Farmer of Canajoharie United Methodist Church officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Priscilla L. Palmeter

ONEONTA — Priscilla L. Palmeter, 18, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the residence of her grandmother, Thelma Stevens.

She was born Nov. 1, 1983, in Oneonta, the daughter of Randall and Karen L. (Stevens) Palmeter.

Priscilla was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was recently confirmed.

She also attended Deb Shader's BOCES class at Laurens Central School. Priscilla had varied interests, but especially enjoyed crafts, shopping and her trips to McDonald's.

She is survived by her father, Randall Palmeter of Oneonta; a brother, Randy D. Palmeter of Dover, Del.; her maternal and paternal grandmothers, Thelma Stevens and Arlene Palmeter, both of Oneonta; and her aunts and uncles, Mark and Kathy Palmeter, Sharon and Bill Hudson, Bruce and Becky Palmeter, Rex and Vanil Palmeter, Rachel Palmeter, William Stevens, Patty Stevens, Larry Meeks and Janet and Rod Wise.

Also surviving are many cousins, along with her godmother Carol Palmeter, and her respite worker and special friend, Mary Anne Sciame.

She was predeceased by her mother in 1996, and her paternal grandfather, Everett Palmeter in 2001.

A service to celebrate the life of Priscilla will be held on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at 11:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. William Bouton, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in St. Lawrence Corners Cemetery, Clayton.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the First United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Rod Whiting

ANDES — The Rev. Rodney B. "Rod" Whiting, 64, of Andes, after a seven-week hospitalization at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002.

The son of the late Sidney and Drucilla (Wilson) Whiting, he was born March 15, 1937, in Buffalo and was a Vietnam era veteran, serving overseas in the U.S. Army Special Services.

He married Theresa A. Lee on Jan. 23, 1993, in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.

As a young man, Rod was an accomplished jazz drummer, traveled throughout the United States and Europe with leading jazz musicians, receiving his formal education at Florida State University where he studied jazz performance.

He then became interested in theology, entered Harvard Divinity School, and continued at the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass. Ordained into the Episcopal Priesthood in 1985 in New Zealand, he served parishes there and, subsequently, in New York City, New Jersey, Massachusetts. and, lastly, Delhi, retiring in 1997, at which time he moved to Andes.

During the 1960s, Rod was involved in the Civil Rights movement, marched at Selma, Ala. and was arrested with his fellow marchers "for the cause." Though he loved his home, dog and five cats, Father Whiting's greatest joy in life was serving the Lord and ministry to those in need, which he also shared with his beloved wife, Theresa Whiting, who survives him.

Other survivors include his beloved daughter, Drucilla Whiting of Cambridge, Mass; granddaughter, Iliana; a brother, Sidney Whiting of Nevada; his parents-in-law, Deanie  Schmidt and Warren E. Lee; siblings-in-law, Jeffrey Lee and Audrey Hughey, all of Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Ian Whiting.

Private funeral services at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, on Sunday, Jan. 13, will be conducted by the Rev. Fr. Jason Catania. A public memorial service to celebrate Father Rod's life will be held later in the spring at St. James' Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware.

There are no calling hours and, in lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate memorial contributions to benefit the 9-11 Tragedy Relief fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Ardath F. Allen

DELANCEY — Ardath F. Allen, 76, of DeLancey, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Union Grove, the daughter of Eno and Edna (Jenkins) Fletcher.

She married  Jackson Y. Allen on Jan. 24, 1948, in Shavertown. He survives as do a daughter, Pamela Allen Mason, of DeLancey; two sons Dennis Allen, of Falls, Church, Va., and Barry (Linda) Allen, of Alexandria, Va.; one grandson, Zachary Van Nostrand, of Delhi; a sister, Anita Gerould, of Walton; a stepbrother, Lloydrick Butler, of Andes; a special "son," Paul Harris, of Corning; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Allen lived in the Delhi area for all her life and was a bookkeeper at Delhi Motors in Delhi for many years before she retired.

She loved her family dearly and loved to cook all day long for them, especially chocolate chip cookies. She loved small animals, in particular her lap dog and a lamb that was very special to her.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hamden Presbyterian Church in Hamden with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, Jan. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will be at a later date at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Peace Plantation, 12752 State Highway 206, Walton, NY, (607) 865-5759, or the Delhi Emergency Squad, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are made with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Priscilla Palmeter

ONEONTA — Priscilla L. Palmeter, 18, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the residence of her grandmother, Thelma Stevens.

Hilton I. Bonney

SCHENECTADY — Hilton I. Bonney, 70, of 3207 Delmar Ave., Schenectady, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at N. East Center for Special Care, Kingston.

He was born Aug. 14, 1931, in Niskayuna.

He was employed by the General Electric Co., Turbine Division, in the boiler room for 37 years; he retired in 1989. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club of GE.

He was a veteran, serving in the Marines.

He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth (Merwin) Bonney, of Glenville; sons, Hilton Bonney Jr. of Schenectady, William Bonney, Marcey and Barry Bonney, both of Victory Mills; stepson, Lewis Merwin of  Jefferson; and daughters, Sara Jane Porter of  Texas and Eliza Althiser of Schenectady.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Bond Funeral Home Inc. in Schenectady. Service time will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Memory's Garden Cemetery, Colonie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services are by the Bond Funeral Home, Schenectady.

Brent Armitage

DRYDEN — Brent Allen Armitage's courageous two-year battle with cancer ended on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at home in Dryden, with his wife by his side. He was 36 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda L. (Worden) Armitage; his son, Christopher; and his daughter, Courtney; his parents, Lewis and Winnifred Armitage of Bradenton, Fla.; his sister, Sandy (Jim) Grover of Sarasota, Fla.; his brother, Gary (Diane) Armitage of Decatur,  Texas; two nephews, Tyler and Sam; and two nieces, Emma and Audrey.

Brent was also loved dearly by his extended family: Lee and Shirley Worden of Guilford, Denise, Jennifer and Elizabeth Georgia; Debra, Wayne, Eric and Scott McHenry; Fred, Lori, Amy and Jamie Worden; David, Ashley and Melissa Worden; and Jonathon, Justin, Jonny and Jeffrey Worden.

Brent was born on Dec. 6, 1965, in Sidney.

He graduated from Sidney Central School in 1984. Brent attended Clarkson University in Potsdam, and received his bachelor's degree in 1988.

He and Brenda were married at the First Baptist Church in Sidney, on May 6, 1989.

Brent was employed by Borg Warner Morse TEC since November 1992, and during that time served the organization in the positions of quality supervisor, quality manager, production manager, materials manager and, most recently, manager of business systems. Brent had the fortunate opportunity to travel worldwide for his work, including the countries of Italy, Japan, Korea and Mexico. Brent strived to achieve goals he set for himself and for the company, and hoped to return to work to continue his career.

Brent was extremely skilled at woodworking, as is evident in the work in his home.

He had a passion for downhill skiing and enjoyed taking Christopher along.

A helper indeed, he loved to give a hand to friends in need.

Brent participated in the community program, Leadership Tompkins, and he served on the Board of Directors of the Dryden Teachers' Center at Dryden Central School.

While the last two years of his life were overshadowed with cancer, Brent filled his days with his unending love for his wife and children. He fully appreciated the time he had, but longed for many more years to share with his family.

He will watch over his family from Heaven where he is now at peace and enduring no more pain.

Brent was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dryden and strongly believed in his faith in God, especially during his illness.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Perkins Funeral Home in Dryden. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dryden.

Burial will be at the Willow Glen Cemetery at a later date.

A college fund for Brent's children has been established. Friends who wish to contribute may send their gift to HSBC Bank USA, c/o L. Parker, 2315 N. Triphammer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850 for the Christopher and Courtney Armitage College Fund.

Memorial gifts may also be made to: The First Presbyterian Church of Dryden, P.O. Box 42, Dryden, NY, or to the Family House Organization through the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which served as a home away from home during Brent's many treatments: Family House Shadyside, 5245 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, 15232.

Robert L. Sweet

EDMESTON — Robert L. Sweet, 89, of Edmeston, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Gilbertsville, the son of William H. and Marion (Borden) Sweet.

He married MaryAnn Pylinski in August 1952. She predeceased him on June 28, 2001.

Robert retired from Kraft Food in Lowville after 42 years; he had been employed in the maintenance department.

He was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post No. 1311 and the VFW Post No. 6912 in Lowville.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.

He is survived by his sons, Robert L. Sweet Jr. and his wife, Donna; James W. Sweet and his wife, Joanne; and Richard W. Sweet; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, William Sweet; and two sisters, Nellie Sweet and Mildred Ward.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman officiating. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an American Legion service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in Robert's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Joyce E. Doucas

COOPERSTOWN — Joyce E. Doucas, 64, of County Highway 11, Cooperstown, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City, Fla.

She was born Aug. 22, 1937, in Richford, Vt.

She owned Whisperin' Pines Chalet, a bed and breakfast. She retired in 1998.

Her hobbies were playing cards, crocheting, knitting and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Constantine of Cooperstown; her sons, Noel Doucas and his wife, Heather, Orange City, Fla., and Christian Doucas and his wife, Erin, Cooperstown; daughter, Nicole Swanson, and her husband, Charlie, Georgia, Vt.; brother, Buster Donlon, Enosburg, Vt.; sister, Beatrice Hoffman, Boca Raton, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Nicolaas Doucas, Kirk Doucas and Eleanor Swanson.

For all of you, we are receiving guests at our home (Whisperin' Pines Chalet) on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service will also take place at our home on Wednesday, at 6 p.m. We look forward to sharing your memories and photos of our mother.
