Ruth Kerzick

SAUGERTIES — Ruth Elizabeth Kerzick, 72, formerly of Cherry Valley, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in Saugerties.

She was born Feb. 14, 1929, in Cooperstown, the daughter of the late Theron and Isobel (McManus) Wiltse.

She married Anthony Kerzick on July 31, 1949, in Cherry Valley. He survives.

A resident of Cooperstown and Cherry Valley most of her life, Ruth moved to The Mill at Saugerties in 2000.

Ruth worked as a home health aide for the elderly at various times throughout her life and most recently was employed at the Cherry Valley Health Center.

Ruth loved gardening and took pride in her beautiful flowers each year.

Since moving to Saugerties, Ruth enjoyed walking to the village and participating in the activities at The Mill, where she resided.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony Kerzick of Hurley; one son, Michael of Hurley; one daughter, Jennifer of Spring Valley; one sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and David Hensle of Milford; two uncles, James McManus of Florida and Harry McManus of Fly Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Swain, of St. James Church, of Fort Plain officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the Cherry Valley Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of donations can be sent to: The Mill at Saugerties/Activity Fund, 55 East Bridge St., Saugerties, NY 12477, or the Village of Saugerties PBA, 43 Partition St., Saugerties, NY 12477.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Josephine R. Vagliardo

ONEONTA — Josephine R. Vagliardo, 72, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, unexpectedly at her residence.

She was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Rome, the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Reszetnik.

She married Louis A. Vagliardo on April 21, 1957, and he passed away on May 31, 1998.

Josephine retired as a secretary from Hartwick College, where she was employed for a number of years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259, Oneonta Ladies of the Elk's and the Telephone Pioneers.

Josephine loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. She also took pleasure in shopping, traveling, concerts, baking, cake decorating, and her morning coffee club at the American Legion.

She is survived by a son, Anthony Vagliardo, and his wife, Darlene of Goodyear Lake; a sister, Leona Lazicki; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Edward Reszetnik, and Jeanette Nacewicz.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, after 3 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259 will conduct its memorial service Wednesday evening, at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Oneonta American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 259, 279 Chestnut St., Oneonta.

Barbara Appleton

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. — Barbara Sheridan Appleton, age 80, formerly of Richfield Springs, died on Dec. 7, 2001, in Mountainside Hospital, Glen Ridge, N.J.

She was born Nov. 5, 1921, the daughter of the late Stanley and Ella Morgan Sheridan.

She was raised and educated in Richfield Springs. She was a graduate of Russell Sage College.

During World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Army (W.A.C.) and was honorably discharged.

She then continued her education graduating from the School of Physical Therapy, Denver,  Colo.

As a licensed physical therapist she worked in various veterans' hospitals and retired in 1986 from the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center, East Orange, N.J.

Surviving are a cousin, Mary Mitch of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Alice Sheridan of Richfield Springs.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wilbur Sheridan.

A service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at 3 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting officiating.

Interment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery next spring.

There are no calling hours.

Salenda C. Bush

DELANCEY — Salenda C. Bush, 96, of DeLancey, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Dec. 7, 1905, in DeLancey, the daughter of Clarence and Anna Y. (Bostwick) Bush.

Miss Bush graduated from Delaware Academy in 1924, the University of the State of New York, State Normal School in 1927, after which she taught in a one-room school house at Holmes Hollow, DeLancey. From September 1929 until her retirement June 20, 1961, she taught at Lynbrook North Junior High School on Long Island.

At this time she moved back to DeLancey and was a member and elder of the DeLancey Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are a niece, Sally Bush, Anderson,  Calif.; a nephew by marriage, Robert Lewis, Delhi; and several grand nieces and grand nephews, Mike Bush, North Carolina, Susan Bush, Florida, John Storrer, Santa Barbara,  Calif., Thomas Storrer, San Luis Obispo,  Calif., Scott Lewis, Delhi, James Lewis, Worcester, Salenda Lewis Murphy, Hartford, Cynthia Lewis Pinney, Treadwell, Melissa Bush Ordmandy, Hamden, Amy Bush Fiorello, Lafayette, La., Sarah Bush Axtell, Deposit, Margaret Bush, Binghamton, Ammon Bush, Deposit, Jason Bush, Deposit and Joe Bush, Hernando, Miss.

Graveside services will take place in the spring at the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the DeLancey Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Anna Udovich

EAST WORCESTER — Anna Udovich, 91, died on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1910, in Austria, the daughter of John Udovich and Margaret Meta Bevcic.

She married William Udovich in New York City.

Mrs. Udovich moved to East Worcester in 1937, from New York City.

She and her husband along with her sister, Emma, and Joe Zigon owned and operated the Oakville Hotel. In 1939, she and her husband bought the Brighton Inn, now the Time Out, in Worcester. She operated the business while her husband served in World War II. When he returned, they purchased the Central Hotel in East Worcester. Eventually they changed the name to Ann's Restaurant, and she continued to operate it after her husband died.

Mrs. Udovich was well known for her cooking and hospitality.

She attended St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester and was a member of the Worcester Women's Club and the Worcester American Legion Auxiliary for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Udovich is survived by her beloved family; her two sons, William and Joyce Udovich of Camillus and Joseph G. and Jean Smaila of Worcester; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Udovich in 1966; four brothers; five sisters and her daughter, Barbara George-Gaus.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with family in attendance 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. There will be a vigil service at 8:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester, at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Udovich to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

William C. Daley

DAVENPORT — William C. Daley, 81, passed away quietly at home Monday evening, Jan. 14, 2002.

He was born April 7, 1920, in Oneonta, the son of Charles and Ethel (Lane) Daley.

He married Pearl Squaires in June 26, 1954, who survives.

He was a veteran from 1941 to 1943.

He drove B-Line Taxi for 14 or 15 years, then a school bus for Charlotte Valley Central School for 12 years and he also was a farmer before that.

He was a member of the Davenport Presbyterian Church, now known as the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church.

Bill was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Nelson Daley.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl; as well as several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Davenport Presbyterian Church, Davenport, with the Rev. Tracie Martin, pastor of the church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 184, Davenport, NY 13750 in loving memory of William C. Daley.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ivan M. Potter

LISLE — Ivan M. Potter, 72, of Lisle, formerly of Laurens, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Wilson Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Oneonta, the son of Arthur F. and Bessie (Walker) Potter.

He married the former Helen Sipos on July 9, 1950, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta. She survives him.

Ivan was raised in Oneonta and had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-56.

He retired in 1987 from Oneonta State Teachers College as a security supervisor.

He was an avid golfer, hunter and served with his wife very actively as EMT members with the Laurens Emergency Squad.

Ivan and his wife, Helen, spent their retirement years in Yuma, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Potter, of Lisle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Donna Potter of Conklin and David and Jeanette Potter of Lisle; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Graydon Bauer, currently residing in Florida.

A private graveside service will be held by the family in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens, NY 13796 in memory of Ivan M. Potter.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Merton E. Naylor

MOUNT VISION — Merton E. Naylor, 72, of County Highway 11, Mount Vision, died Jan. 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 17, 1929, the son of the late Herbert and Ethel (Harrington) Naylor.

He and his brothers operated the Naylor Brothers Dairy Farm in Mount Vision until 1993.

He was one of the founding members of the Mount Vision Fire Department, holding many offices. He became an honorary member when he could no longer be actively involved. He was also a longtime member of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church and the Mount Vision Grange.

He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Janice Naylor, of Mount Vision; his sons, David Naylor of Mount Vision and his fiancee, Carol Breier of Cooperstown, and Douglas Naylor and his wife, Antonella of South Windsor, Conn.; his daughter, Darleen Callahan and her husband, Christopher of Mount Vision; his sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Robert Williams, and their son, Gary of Masonville; grandchildren, Caitlin Breier, Benjamin Naylor, Amanda Naylor and a new baby expected in June; his extended family, Jon, Tandi, Audrianna and Eric Ericson of Mount Vision; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Lisle and Kendall Naylor.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends and family may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, when the family will be present.

Burial will be in the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mount Vision Fire Department or the Hartwick Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Lawrence Linton

ONEIDA — Lawrence R. Linton, 87, of 4706 Williams Street Road, Oneida, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility where he had been a resident since Nov. 18, 1997.

Lawrence was born on July 9, 1914, in Fort Atkinson, Wis., the son of Forest and Olive Mepham Linton.

He was a graduate of Cincinnatus Central High School and had been a resident of the Oneida area since 1934.

He married Jean Drake on July 25, 1941, at Hickory Knoll in Oneida Castle.

Larry was employed for many years with Oneida Ltd. Silversmiths as a security guard. He retired in 1991. He had also been employed with the former Agway Feed Store in Canastota and later the Kime Hardware of Canastota. He also served as sexton of the Oneida Castle Cemetery for many years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a private first class from 1942 to 1945.

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Sherrill.

Surviving are his wife, Jean; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wilbur Linton of Sherrill, Daniel and Kathy Linton of Sherrill, and Andrew and Cyndi Linton of Hagaman; two daughters and one son-in-law, April Gates of West Oneonta, and Robin and Gary Haddock of Oneonta; one brother and sister-in-law, Archie and Edna Linton of Vernon Center; one sister, Edith Griffin of Syracuse; a very dear special friend, Judy Tator of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday from the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. M. Russell Lee officiating. Interment will be made in Sunnyside Cemetery, Merrillsville.

Friends are invited and may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility Patients Fund, 323 Genesee St., Oneida, NY 13421 or the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.
