E. Genevieve "Gen " Russell

E. Genevieve " Gen" Russell, 79 of Zanesville died at 4:00 a.m. Monday September 2, 2002 at her residence.

She was born May 16, 1923 in Zanesville a daughter of the late Arthur & Lottie Monroe Dickey. She retired as a clerk for General Electric, was a member of First Christian Church, Charlotte Becher CCL, graduated from Lash High School in 1941 and was an avid Bowler & Golfer for many years.

Surviving are three daughters; Sherry ( Larry) Patton Of New Albany, Cindy ( Gary ) Wilson of New Concord, Holly ( Richard) Fusner of Crestwood, Kentucky, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two brothers; Floyd Dickey of Dover, DE, Randall Dickey of Green Acres, Florida, two sisters; Arla Davy of Zanesville, Barbara Boles of Newark.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents, by her husband, Charles E. Russell, who died October 8, 1987, two brothers, Byron & Stanley Dickey, and two sisters, Phyllis Simms & Peggy Crossmock.

No calling hours will be observed. Private services will be held at a later date at Zanesville Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice or to First Christian Church. Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville entrusted with arrangements.

Helen M. Shankle
Helen M. Shankle, 67, of Zanesville died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002 at Genesis Hospice, Morrison House.

She was born January 18, 1935 in Zanesville, Ohio the daughter of the late William & Clarice Moore McCutcheon. Mrs. Shankle was a member of the Apostolic Gospel Church and prior to her coming to Zanesville, she attended the Pentecostal Assembly Church in Columbus Ohio.

Surviving are three sons, James A. Shankle of Lakewood Ohio, Michael S. ( Lisa) Shankle of Thornville, W. Edward ( Joy) Phillips of Tallmadge, three grandchildren, Charity (Todd) Furcsik,Tami Shankle and Jessica Phillips,three great grandchildren, Todd and Bethany Furcsik and Austen Shankle,three sisters, Josephine Sheets of Zanesville, Bessie ( Max) Hittle of
Dresden,and Sally (Charles) Hampton of Columbus, four brothers, William ( Kathleen) McCutcheon of Zanesville, Joseph ( Evelyn) McCutcheon of Zanesville, Glenn ( Phyllis) McCutcheon of Zanesville, and Ed ( Sylvia) McCutcheon of Upatoe GA.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Norman J. Shankle, who died January 28, 2001, and by two sisters Wanda McCutcheon and Peggy Schneider.

Friends may call 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville, Ohio and one hour prior to services at the Apostolic Gospel Church at 1365 Chamberlin Street, Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 4, 2002 with the Rev. Larry Farris & Rev. Richard Davis officiating. Burial will
follow at Zanesville Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice,the Alzheimer's Association or to the Apostolic Gospel Church.

Dr. Donald A. Urban
Dr. Donald A. Urban, 88, died August 26, 2002, at his home in Zanesville. Born June 14, 1914, in Perry Township on the old Wheeling Road, a part of the original ZaneTrace, he was the son of the late Franklin Pierce and Lelia Lighthizer Urban.

A long time Zanesville surgeon, Dr. Urban graduated from Zanesville High School, class of 1932, and attended Muskingum College for two years. He then transferred to The Ohio State University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1936 and the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1940.

Following an internship at the City Hospital of Akron, where he received the Rankin Intern prize in surgery, Dr. Urban then began a fellowship in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic where he became first assistant to the late doctors John M. Waugh and B. Marden Black. Upon entering military service and completing basic training, he was assigned to an evacuation hospital in the European Theater of Operations. He became chief of surgery at the 385th station hospital in Nuremberg, Germany, where the trials were in progress.

After returning to the United States he was assigned to the Scott Field AFB Hospital, Bellville, Ill. He was discharged with the rank of major from the Anacostia AFB Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Following one quarter in surgical pathology at the Mayo Clinic, he began his practice in January 1948 in the old clinic building on Market and Sixth street in Zanesville. Later that year he and the late Dr. Fred Phillips formed a partnership in general surgery. This association lasted 30 years and after Dr. Phillips' retirement, Dr. Urban continued practice with Dr. R.S. Donoho and
Dr. C.S. Harrison, both of whom had previously joined the practice. Dr. Urban retired in 1985.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Urban was a member of the AMA, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Muskingum
County Academy of Medicine, the medical staff of the Good Samartin and Bethesda Hospitals, serving each at different times as staff president. In the early days he lectured in the School of Nursing of Ohio University, Zanesville. He participated in civic affairs, particularly those relating to the practice of medicine. He received the Hiram Heck award in 1994.

He was interested in local history and the settlement of local ancestors in this area. He was a member of the Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio State Genealogical Society, the first families of Muskingum County and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a 50 year member of the Grace United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Flora Conrad Avera Urban; and one sister, Mrs. Betty Riggs of Zanesville. There are three children and five grandchildren: daughter Lelia Elizabeth Patterson (Michael) of Alliance, Ohio, and her daughter Katherine Adaire Patterson of Alliance, Ohio, and son Benjamin Avera
Patterson of Athens, Ohio; daughter Flora Caroline Davis (David) and her son Jacob L. Davis, all of Columbus, Ohio; son, Donald Avera Urban, M.D. (Leslie J. Patterson), and his daughters Emily Faye Urban and Elizabeth Watkins Urban, all of Birmingham, Ala..

Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.Wednesday at Bolin Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Donnally officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery, Sonora, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Health Care Foundation, Grace United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.

Charles J. Novaria

Charles J.Novaria, 67, of Nashport, Ohio, died at 7:18 PM Saturday August 24, 2002 at the Genesis Hospice Morrison House.

He was born November 10, 1934 in Zanesville the son of the late Joseph O. and Sylvia Malone Novaria. Mr. Novaria was a truck driver and retired from Matlack Trucking. He served in the Army in Korea. Mr. Novaria was a member of the Tree of Life Church, Eagles Lodge # 302 (Beneficial Member) and the Teamsters Local 413.

Surviving is his wife Rosella Cummings Novaria of Nashport, daughter Barbara A. Reavley of Nashport, son Randy J. Novaria of Nashport, six grandchildren, and sister-in-law Eleanor Novaria of Adamsville, Ohio.

Mr. Novaria was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Novaria.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 Monday, August 26, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where services will be held at, 1:00pm Tuesday August 27, 2002 with Pastor Thomas N. Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Edward M. Freeman Sr

Edward M. Freeman Sr. 80, of Zanesville died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 at Adams Lane Care Center.

He was born September 26, 1921 at Zanesville, a son of the late Edward M. & Bertha Burkhart Freeman. He retired as a truck driver for Commercial Motor Freight, was an Army veteran of World War II, member of American Legion Post 29, Maranatha Bible Church, Southeastern Ohio Teamsters Retiree's Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles # 302.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie L. Blackstone Freeman of Zanesville, Three daughters; Patricia ( Cecil) Lepley of Zanesville, Kathy ( Robert) West of Mineral Wells, WV, & Tabbie Goslin of Zanesville, two sons; George E. ( Dixie) Freeman of Lockland & Edward M. ( Chip) Freeman of Warsaw, one sister; Marian Norman of Athens, Texas, one brother; Bernard Freeman of Athens, Texas, Ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents, sister, Bertha Althabers and a granddaughter Cheryl Hughett.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2002 with Pastor Dale McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at Bloomfield Cemetery, New Concord. VFW George Selsam Post 1058 will hold military rites at the grave. The Fraternal Order of Eagles will have services at 6:30 PM Monday Evening.

James E. Bell

James E. Bell, 67, of Zanesville died at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday August 21, 2002 at his residence.

He was born July 14, 1935 in Zanesville, the son of the late Roy C. & Lulu Speelman Bell. Mr. Bell retired from Putnam Transfer and Storage Co. in 1995. He was a graduate of Zanesville High School, Class of 1953, attended OUZ and the American Institute of Banking. Mr. Bell was an avid Blue Devil and NASCAR sports fan.

Surviving is his daughter, Krystal ( Mark) Myers of Orlando, Fla., a very special friend, John M. Hoyes of Zanesville, and his former wife & friend, Sharon Smith, and three grandchildren, Christopher, Brian & Matthew.

No calling hours will be observed, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville with Pastor Christopher Brown of The New Lexington Bible Church officiating. Interment will take place at Zanesville
Memorial Park.

In Lieu of flowers: memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or to Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care.

Yancey M. Larrison

Yancey M. Larrison, 28, of Zanesville, died Tuesday evening, August 20, 2002 at Zanesville.

He was born April 29, 1974 at Zanesville, Ohio a son of Sandra (Larrison) & Robert L. Williams of Zanesville and father Mark ( Diane) Gray of Mantua. He was a laborer for a construction Company.

Surviving in addition to his parents, son, Shiloh M. Larrison of Zanesville, four sisters, Shanda ( Bill) Devoll of Zanesville, Celina ( Geo ) Jyurovat, Melanie ( Nicholas) Daniels, Michelle Gray all of Mantua, Brother, George Ballard of Mantua, grandmother, Virginia L. Himmelspach of Zanesville, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, two aunts, two uncles.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 . Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Scott D. Potts

Scott D. Potts, 32 of Hopewell, Ohio died at 7:40 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2002 at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born June 11, 1970 a son of David R. ( Lynn) Creighton of Stockport & Bettie A. ( Richard Potts Dodson of Zanesville. He was a carpenter for W.L. Associates Construction Company. He was a member of the American Legion & Y-City Midget League where he had served as coach.

Surviving in additition to his parents, his wife, Jill Rice Potts of Zanesville,one brother, John Creighton of Stockport, five sisters, Ashley Lynn Dodson of Zanesville, Jessica ( Tracy) Singree of Malta, Meghan Creighton, Millicent Creighton, & Morgan Creighton all of Stockport. Grandparents, Mary E. Potts & Ruth Dodson of Zanesville, Rose & Ronald Shaw of Chesterhill, several aunts & uncles including special aunts & uncles Pam & Tim Cox of Zanesville & David & Julie Potts of Beverly, & Patrick Creighton of Malta, James Creighton & Shelley Creighton of California, one nephew, Casey Singree of Malta. Special cousins, Kaila Abel & Jesse Cox. Two special friends, Ronnie Fulkerson & Dave Embrey.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles D. Potts, Roy Dodson, John & Pauline Creighton, sister Elizabeth Ann Creighton, Uncle Michael Creighton.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m Thursday, August 22, 2002 at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 with Rev. Dennis E. Simons officiaitng. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park.
