Gloria Morehead, managed school cafeteria
Gloria Tremain Morehead, 55, manager of the Manchester School Cafeteria for 21 years, died Thursday.

Mrs. Morehead, of Manchester, Ind., also was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Manchester.

She leaves her husband, Charles; mother, Emma Pohlman of Greendale, Ind.; sons Joseph and Christopher Morehead, both of Aurora, Ind.; brothers Jack and Charles Tremain, both of Lawrenceburg; a sister, Shirley Drury of Lawrenceburg; and four grandchildren.

Jack McCarthy, bank officer

Jack Justin McCarthy, past president of Robert A. Cline Inc. and former real estate trust officer with PNC Bank, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 79.

Mr. McCarthy, who retired 17 years ago, kept in touch with former colleagues.

"He still met with the boys from the bank. They wouldn't let him go," said his wife of 57 years, Miriam McCarthy.

Her husband - who also was a promising musician in his youth - had an even longer association with a group of school chums.

"They were longtime friends, from kindergarten days. They called themselves ROMEOS, for Really Old Men Eating Out," she said.

Mr. McCarthy was a member of the Highland Country Club, St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, and the Fort Thomas Lions Club. He was a past president of Building Owners and Managers Club in Cincinnati.

In his youth, Mr. McCarthy played trumpet with the Shades of Blue Band.

Mr. McCarthy was also an Army veteran of World War II.

Besides his wife, he leaves sons, Thomas M. McCarthy of Cincinnati and J. Timothy McCarthy of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Patty Donaldson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky., 41075. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Linda Dils, champion of kids

Linda Dils had two children of her own but loved hundreds more.

Mrs. Dils, a long-time teacher who was recently appointed director of curriculum and instruction for Newport Independent Schools, died Friday. The Anderson Township resident was 47.

"She's my hero," said Dan Sullivan, superintendent of the Newport Independent Schools. "She was so sick, and every day she came to work. She'd lost her hair. She was the most courageous girl."

As preparation for her 24-year teaching career, Mrs. Dils earned a degree from West Virginia University and received post-graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati, University of South Carolina and Western Maryland College. Mrs. Dils helped revive Newport schools, working to lead the low-ranking system to one Sullivan described as reborn.

"In the last four years, she turned the place around. Through all the adversity that woman suffered through, her main goal was to improve the life of the kids in Newport," he said.

"Everybody knew that Linda was sick, but they didn't know it from Linda. Every day was a new day with Linda. She came to work and made a difference."

Mrs. Dils is survived by her husband Allen C. Dils, and sons Chad and Matthew.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today at T. P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Mt. Washington . Another visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, W.Va. The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at South Parkersburg Baptist Church, Parkersburg. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rachel Brown, civic and church leader

For decades, Rachel Brown was active in the civic affairs of her adopted city, Cincinnati.

She was a devoted member of the Women's City Club and the Charter Party. "She was known to a great many elected officials," said lifelong friend Conrad Haupt.

She was also interested in historic preservation.

"Rachel was very opinionated. She wrote letters to the editor a lot," said Haupt. "She didn't hesitate to write a letter and let the members of City Council know what they should do."

Mrs. Brown, 93, died July 12. She was the oldest living member of the First Unitarian Church in Avondale.

"There was no failure at all in her mental acuity," Haupt said. "She was very perceptive. She was extremely cultured and well-read. She hosted musicales in her home."

The University of Colorado graduate studied music at Pomona College in California and earned a master's degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Brown was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the oldest member of the Noonday Club, a literary society.

She leaves her son, Theodore C. Brown of Union, Ore.; daughter, Jane B. MacLeod of Pittsburgh; sisters, Dorothy Feather of Loveland, Colo., and Barbara Bosin of Collegeville, Pa.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 5 p.m. Saturday at First Unitarian Church, Avondale.

Memorials: First Unitarian Church, the UC College Conservatory of Music or American Parkinson's Disease Association.
