Dorothy J. Maxwell

TAHLEQUAH -- A service of memories and music for Dorothy J. (Taylor) Maxwell, 86, of Tahlequah, will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 3, at the First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Delaware. The celebration of life and faith will be officiated by the Reverends Ginny Hathaway, John Price and Elizabeth Box Price. Participating in the service will be the FUMC Chancel Choir, Marjorie Malone, director; Ramona Frazier, organist; the Studebaker Quartet; Cheryl Kinion, soprano; Dr. Mary Studebaker, violin; Bennett Stucky, violin; Holly Stocks, piano accompanist; Will Stucky, vocals/guitar; Mike Allen, bagpipes; and Geri Henderson, PEO Sisterhood, Chapter F.D.

Dorothy Jeanette Taylor was born on Sept. 29, 1917, to Lottie Jane (Johnston) and John Newton Taylor in University Place, Neb., a town later annexed to the city of Lincoln, Neb. She passed from this life on March 4, 2004 in Tahlequah. Dorothy was a l935 graduate of Jackson High School in Lincoln, Neb., where she was elected May Queen her senior year. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and graduated from the Bryan School of Nursing in 1939.

Dorothy married Paul Jean Maxwell on March 1, 1940 in Sidney, Iowa; in 1943 he graduated from the Nebraska College of Medicine. They lived briefly in Rochester, Minn., where Dr. Maxwell interned at the Mayo Clinic, and later moved to Washington, D.C., when he was stationed at Walter Reed General Hospital during World War II. After the war, the Maxwells returned to Lincoln, Neb., where they raised their three children.

Dorothy was devoted to her family and extended her kindness and care to everyone. She was a beautiful lady known by her glowing and genuine smile. She treasured her friendships and enjoyed bridge, gardening, cooking, sewing and keeping a beautiful home, which became the focal place for family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Dorothy and her family were active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Following the sudden and devastating loss of her husband in 1970, Dorothy explored her keen interest in people and cultures by visiting many countries including Czechoslovakia, Russia, Korea, Indonesia, Holland, England, Scotland, and the Holy Lands. She was pleased to be included in numerous motor home vacations with her sister Margaret Gonce and husband, Walter.

Dorothy was thrilled at age 80 to join her other sister, Grace Bock, and Grace's daughter, Becky Bowman, and other die-hard University of Nebraska football fans for a Nebraska Tail-back cruise to Alaska. The trip ended at Husky Stadium with Big Red defeating the Huskies (1997). The extended Taylor family is a close-knit clan, proud of their Scottish roots, and they have celebrated biennial family reunions since 1985, providing additional opportunities for travel.

Dorothy was an avid reader and became well educated in the stock market. She took pleasure in supporting companies making new strides in medicine. She kept her nursing license current and was a private duty nurse providing individual home care. She kept close ties with her nursing class of '39, looking forward to alumni reunions, and was a loyal supporter of the Bryan LGH Foundation.

Dorothy cared for her mother, mother-in-law, and aunt throughout their elderly years until their deaths. She developed a companionship with Emmett Eckhard of Lincoln, Neb., with whom she enjoyed simple pleasures of fishing, card games, and rooting for the "Huskers." She returned from Arizona to Lincoln, Neb., to care for "Eck" in his dying weeks and extended her compassion to his family.

While she always considered herself a Lincoln girl, Dorothy lived a few years near her son, Dr. Kenneth Maxwell and his family in Omaha, Neb. She then moved to Sun City, Ariz., near her sister Margaret and husband Walter Gonce in 1998 to enjoy her golden years, but suffered several illnesses. Her daughter, Janet Stucky, brought her to Tahlequah to live at Heritage Place Retirement Residence in December, 2000. Dorothy was courageously and determinedly recovering from a stroke and benefited from participating in activities with Janet and her husband, Dr. Don Stucky and their sons, Bennett and Will.

While in Tahlequah, the First United Methodist Church became Dorothy's church home and she was active in worship and Bible study. Dorothy loved the beauty of the Tahlequah area and the sincerity of its people. She and Janet were initiated together into the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter F.D., and together they continued Dorothy's travels to be with extended family and lifelong friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul Maxwell Sr.; her parents, John and Lottie Jane Taylor; one sister, Ruth Rebecca Taylor (all of Lincoln, Neb.); and her brother, Dr. Donald N. Taylor Sr. of Alliance, Neb.

She is survived by her two sons and one daughter: Dr. Paul J. Maxwell Jr. and wife Jean of Alliance, Neb.; Dr. Kenneth J. Maxwell and wife Kiley of Omaha, Neb.; and Janet Stucky and husband Dr. Don Stucky, of Tahlequah; two sisters, Margaret Gonce and husband, Walter, of Sun City West, Ariz., and Grace Bock of Beatrice, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.

The Dorothy Jeanette Taylor Maxwell Memorial Scholarship has been established to benefit a student at the Bryan School of Nursing. Donations may be made to the Bryan LGH Foundation, 1600 S. 48th St., Lincoln, Neb., 68506.

Ethel Marie Koehn Goossen was born April 9, 1924, and passed into the presence of her savior on March 23, 2004. Born to Adolph and Edna Becker Koehn in Fairview, Ethel was the second of four children.

It was during her freshman year at the Oklahoma Bible Academy in Meno, that Ethel realized her need of a savior and placed her faith and trust in Jesus Christ. On Jan. 31, 1943, she dedicated her life to Christian service, to do whatever God wanted her to do. It was during this time that she met and became engaged to Walter D. Goossen of Hillsboro, Kan. Her greatest desire in life was that people around her know that God loves them so much that he sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross, giving his precious blood as an atonement for their sins, so that whoever believes and receives him will be saved from the punishment for their sins.
