Alvin Bateman Jr.

Alvin Bateman Jr. of Konawa, died Friday. He was 72.

He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Oklahoma City to Bertha and Alvin Bateman Sr.

He was married to Thelma Jean Wano at Fort Smith, Ark., on Oct. 3, 1950. He lived in Oklahoma City, where he was a plumber and owned and operated the A.M. Bateman Plumbing Co. from 1932 to 1975.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a Sunday school teacher and for the past 25 years, lived in the Konawa area. He was a member of the Konawa Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, on July 14, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Steven Bateman of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Larry Bateman of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Norma Gaut of Konawa; one brother, Donald Bateman of Monroe, Mich.; one sister, Eva McKinley of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial services are 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Cemetery with the Rev. Pam Shirk officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Konawa.

Irene Lyon

Former area resident Irene (Trammell) Lyon of Anchorage, Alaska died Thursday in Anchorage. She was 87.

Mrs. Lyon was born July 11, 1911, in Kirbyville, Mo., to James Henry and Ethel Caroline (Parnell) Trammell. She married Robert Donald Lyon in 1932.

She had previously lived in Seminole, Prague and Mineral Wells, Texas. She was a retired school teacher and a Baptist.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Wood, Anchorage; one granddaughter, Lee Anne Wood, Fairbanks, Alaska; two brothers, J.H. Trammell, Ada; Bill Trammell, Oklahoma City; and four sisters, Berneice Dinius, Prague; Beatrice Gutierrez, Taos, N.M.; Loydale Treat, Wenaatchee, Wash.; and Kay Gibson, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 23, 1980.

Services are pending under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague.

Lula Thelma Lowrimore

Former area resident Lula Thelma Lowrimore died Thursday in Midwest City. She was 91.

Mrs. Lowrimore was born June 6, 1907, to Samuel and Cordelia (Davis) Lacy. She married Cecil Monroe Lowrimore in December of 1928.

She had lived in Prague and Meeker and had been a resident of Midwest City for the past two years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Delois and Lawrence Terrell, Midwest City; four grandchildren, Ray Lockeby, Harrah; Billy Terrell, Oklahoma City; Debbie Carter, Tecumseh; Susie Terrell, Midwest City; six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 1, 1962; her parents, one son, three brothers and one sister.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Prague Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague, with Bro. Tim Emmons officiating.

Violet Cletis Hailey

Longtime Konawa resident Violet Cletis Hailey died Thursday in Ada. She was 94.

Mrs. Hailey was born Nov. 30, 1904, in Shawnee, Indian Territory. She married Vitchel Hailey on Nov. 29, 1930.

She graduated from East Central University and was a retired school teacher and member of United Methodist Church of Konawa. She was a member of Rebekahs, Eastern Star Lodge, the White Shrine, the Ameranth, Home Extension Club and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her son, Mike Hailey, Konawa; daughter, Mary Ann Miller, Konawa; two sisters, Etta Childers, Clovis, Calif.; Geneva Cox, Kerman, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church with Rev. Pam Shirk officiating. Burial will be in Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home, Konawa.

Wilma Jean James

Wilma Jean James, 66, Davenport, died Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Born in Davenport on May 8, 1932, she was the daughter of Ed and Shirley (Barksdale) Gibson. She lived in the Del City area for many years where she was a member of the First Christian Church. She worked at Tinker Air Force Base before retirement. She married Fredie E. James in Davenport on May 28, 1955.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jim Way, Del City, and Gaye Dawn and Joe Deathrage, Moore; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Charles Wooden, Oklahoma City; JoAnn and Johnny Gaps, West Des Moines, Iowa; and Edna and Bob Cross, Davenport; one granddaughter; two grandsons; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Chandler, with the Rev. Jim Jones officiating. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery.

Betty Opal Howard

Betty Opal Howard, 80, Seminole, died Friday at a local nursing home.

She was born May 9, 1918, in Thornburg, Ark., to Henry Loftis and Sarah Cline. She married Sylvester Howard on Aug. 17, 1935, in Hartford, Ark. She worked as a nurse's aide at Shawnee Regional Hospital until her retirement in 1984. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one grandson, and a sister.

She is survived by four sons, Harley, Jimmy, and Ken, all of Seminole; and Rick Howard, Shawnee; three daughters, Betty Johnson, Seminole; Gail Anderson, Norman; and Sylvia Graves, Perry; brother Marvin Loftis, Seminole; sisters Alta Harchell, Seminole, and Virginia Rush, Moore; 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole, with Dr. Kelvin Moseley officiating. Burial will be in Little Cemetery.

Lowell Manning Estes

Shawnee resident Lowell Manning Estes died Saturday at a local nursing home. He was 85.

Estes was born March 7, 1914 in Imboden, Ark., to Clarence and Myrtle Estes. He attended schools in Imboden and moved to Mobile, Ala., at age 19. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a carpenter and civil service worker with the U.S. Air Force from 1946 until retirement in 1964. He was a founding member of the Mobile Lapidary Society.

Survivors include his daughter, Eileen Hargrove, Shawnee; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Don Talley, Mobile, Ala.; Emily and David Naefe, Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Alice Mae Nowling, Mobile, Ala.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

At Estes' request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Bessie Birdwell

Konawa resident Bessie Birdwell died Friday. She was 85.

Mrs. Birdwell was born March 2, 1914, in Konawa to Maloche Elizabeth and Billie Wood. She married James Birdwell on March 31, 1938, in Konawa.

She lived in the Konawa area most of her life and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Lucille Birdwell Castle, Eufaula; son, Charley Bowlegs, Canada; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Carla Birdwell, Shawnee; and Tommy and Vivian Birdwell, Tecumseh; sister, Josephine Hines, California; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, on Oct. 16, 1975, and her grandson, Thomas Birdwell, April 1996.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Pickard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley Martin officiating. Burial will be at Cummings Cemetery, Maud.

Dollie Morelock

Longtime Prague resident Dollie Morelock died Saturday in Prague. She was 93.

Mrs. Morelock was born Aug. 9, 1905, in Creek County to Isaac Monroe Craig and Fannie Jane Hosey Craig. She married Virgil L. Morelock on June 21, 1925, in Paden.

She had lived in Prague since 1957 and was employed as a nurse's aide at the Parkland Manor Nursing Home from 1966 to 1978. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Prague.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Aline Morelock, Prague; daughters, Delores Brown, Liberal, Kan.; Margaret Kerr, Prague; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Sid Collins, Prague; Ruth and Paul Nootbaar, Paden; Janice and Nevin Burkhart, Bethany; daughter-in-law, Delores Morelock, Cromwell; two sons-in-law, Bob Federman, Big Springs, Texas; Claud Briggs, Salt Lake City, Utah; 39 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren

Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Prague with Bro. Tim Emmons officiating. Burial will follow in Prague Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 27, 1973; her parents, two daughters, one son, five brothers and five sisters.

Lisa Dianne (Coffey) Flowers

Lisa Dianne (Coffey) Flowers of Stillwater died Monday in Stillwater. She was 31.

She was born Aug. 8, 1968, in Oklahoma City. She was the daughter of Donald L. and Mary E. (Deatherage) Coffey.

She married Steve Michael Flowers Sept. 8, 1990, in Choctaw.

Her family moved in 1968 to Jones, where she attended school and graduated from Jones High School in 1986. Mrs. Flowers attended Rose State College and Oklahoma State University. She worked at Venture in Oklahoma City.

After her marriage in 1990, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma City, where she worked at OKC OCU bookstore. She then became a homemaker to care for her family. She was a member of the Stillwater Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Michael Flowers; son, Colton Layne Flowers, of the home; daughter, Lauren Nicole Flowers, of the home; parents, Donald L. and Mary E. Coffey, Jones; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Millissa Coffey, Princeton, Ky.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Teresa and Doug Foster, Jones, and Caren and David Bush, Edmond; grandparents, E.W. and Marguerite Deatherage, Bethany; father- and mother-in-law, Dean and Suzanne Flowers, Shawnee; sister-in-law, Pam Flowers, Norman; grandparents-in-law, Johnny and Marie Flowers, Meeker; five nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Ila Coffey.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ, Choctaw, with Robert George officiating. Burial will be at IOOF in Jones. The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater.

Nora A. Steele

Shawnee resident Nora A. Steele died Sunday at a local hospital. She was 87.

Mrs. Steele was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Oilton to William Lewis and Mary R. (Huckaby) Parnell. She moved to Shawnee in 1943 and worked at Finley Cleaners.

Survivors include her sister, Jewel Harris, Visalia, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Sunnyside Cemetery under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Reed Lynn officiating.

Humbert Hunt

Shawnee resident Humbert "H.L." Hunt died Monday at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was 65.

He was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Tecumseh to William and Ethel Hunt.

He married Cora Morrison March 6, 1962, in Gainesville, Texas. They were married 38 years.

Hunt was raised and attended school in Tecumseh. He retired from Tinker Air Force Base 10 years ago and worked as a Shawnee School bus driver for nine years.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Downtown Pentecostal Holiness Church and Royal Rangers. Hunt also was a Shawnee resident for 46 years.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Hunt, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Gene Harris, Meeker, Sharon Sullivan, Tecumseh, and Tammy and Clint Hanks, Seminole; grandchildren, Michael and Dustin Sullivan, Tecumseh, and Colt and Chad Harris, Meeker; brother, Everett "Buddy" Hunt and his wife Norma of Shawnee; sisters, Thelma Irene Haley, Tecumseh, and Inez Thomason, Sulphur; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eva Pearl Ray and LaVella Zimmerman.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Downtown Pentecostal Holiness Church with Ron Baldridge and the Rev. Buddy Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Royal Rangers, care of the Downtown Pentecostal Holiness Church, Shawnee.
