Graydon Stanley "Jerry" Gray

Graydon Stanley "Jerry" Gray, 83, Gold Beach, died May 25, 2002, in Gold Beach of a heart attack.

He was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Syracuse, Neb., to Roy B. Gray and Lois Richards Gray Kraft Witt.

He was raised on a large farm owned by his stepfather, Frank Kraft.

He attended schools in Syracuse and toured the state with a group of schoolmates who had formed a vocal group.

At 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and went to the Great Lakes Naval Training School. He attended naval schools during his years in the service. He served aboard the U.S.S. Lexington aircraft carrier on Dec. 7, 1941, during World War II and the thick of the Pacific action. The "Lady Lex" was in the Battle of the Coral Sea when it was hit by a Japanese Torpedo and sunk. He was rescued some time later by another naval ship. He also survived an airplane crash while on duty at San Diego.

Mr. Gray had also attended pre-flight schools and participated in reconnaissance flights in various areas. One memory he shared was flying from Japan to Alaska with orders to bring back his commanding officer a large stage of fresh Alaskan crab, after completing their required mission.

After the war and the Occupation of Japan, he was stationed in Saipan and Atsugi N.A.S. Japan with his family. While in Japan he became friends with Price Mauri (an Imperial Marine), through his maid, Fujiko. He was invited to the Royal Palace to play golf with the prince who was a Harvard graduate.

His last assignment, after serving in many duty stations, was Memphis, Tenn., where he taught aviation mechanics. He retired in 1957, with an honorable discharge. He received his Certificate of Retirement for "having served faithfully and honorably in the U.S. Navy as a chief aviation structural mechanic on Oct. 1, 1967, for having served 20 years of active service and 10 years inactive in the U.S. Naval Reserve."

After his military retirement, he moved to California with his family where his first wife Thelma died in Concord, Calif., in 1961.

Mr. Gray married Dorothy in Concord, Calif., Feb. 25, 1962. They made their homes in Concord and Antioch, Calif. He retired from the Acalanes School District in Lafayette, Calif., in 1980 and moved to Gold Beach in 1989.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Cedar Bend Golf Course in Gold Beach and the Cedar Bend Mens' Club. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, Professional Golfer's Association. He was an active member of the Gold Beach Elks Lodge where he served as a trustee and an exalted ruler, a member of the Oregon State Sheriff's Association, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Mary Gray of Gold Beach; stepson, Jesse Lee Lovelady of Brookings; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Lou Meyer of Sacramento, Calif.; Janis and Jim Ramsey of Apex, N.C.; granddaughters, Laree Hawkland of Baton Rouge, La.; Sheryl and husband Bill Mulville of Sacramento; Allison and husband Mark Ramsey of Maryland; Renee and husband Richard Stidham of Sacramento; Robin and husband Rick Fremont of New Jersey; Julie and husband Guy Franklin of Sacramento; grandsons, Mike Opdahl of California; Marc Opdahl of Seattle; and Matthew and wife Julie Ramsey of Maryland.

Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Christopher, Casey and Nicholas Hawkland of Baton Rouge; Michelle Opdahl of California; Jon and Kelly Mulville of Sacramento; Tyler, Brandon and Lauryn Ramsey of Maryland; Ashley, Sara and Matt Stidham of Sacramento; aunt, Florence Richards of Nebraska City, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Mozelle Sinquefield of Concord; and Kathryn M. Wells of Gold Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Leland Gray, and his first wife.

Chancey Edward "Ed" Carpenter

Chancey Edward "Ed" Carpenter, 76, Pistol River, died June 1, 2002, in Medford.

A funeral service will be Friday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel. Interment will follow at Pistol River cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Donations may be made to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, c/o Masonic Temple, 416 Azalea Park Road, Brookings, OR 97415.

Eric D. D'Alcorn

Eric D. D'Alcorn, 91, Brookings, died June 2, 2002, in Gold Beach.

He was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Spalding, England to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar D'Alcorn.

He grew up and went to school in Spalding and married Mamie Atterbury in Derby, England, Nov. 20, 1944.

He served in the British army from 1941 to 1945.

Mr. D'Alcorn left England in 1946 and lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Escondido, Calif., before moving to Brookings in 1977. He worked as a manager at Woolworth's until his retirement in 1977. He was an engraver in Brookings for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, along with three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.

Alice Casebeer Lough-ridge

Alice Casebeer Lough-ridge, 94, Harbor, died June 4, 2002, at a residential care facility following a long illness.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today (June 8) at the New Life Community Church, 424 Second St., Crescent City. Pastor Larry Read will officiate.

Ms. Loughridge was born Sept. 5, 1907, in Seattle to Homer and Edith Smith Casebeer. She was raised in Puerto Rico and Southern California, and completed an undergraduate degree in nursing.

She worked as a registered nurse while furthering her education. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University and made contributions to the field of nursing, including founding a school of nursing in Mexico City.

Ms. Loughridge traveled the world extensively and lived in many locations during her lifetime. She taught psychology at the university level in Chicago and Tennessee, and lived for years in San Francisco.

She liked to sail her sailboat and was a past member of a yacht club in San Francisco.

She was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Brookings.

Ms. Loughridge is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Kathaleen and Kenneth Manning of Umatilla; niece, Sasha Weaver-Upton and her husband, Earl Upton of Crescent City; two great-nephews, Stephen H. Nash of Sacramento, Calif., and Marcus N. Nash of Vancouver, Wash.; and many friends in Brookings-Harbor.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.

Penny Kay Senchina-Fleek

Penny Kay Senchina-Fleek, 44, Brookings, died July 5, 2002 at her home in Brookings of natural causes.

She was born Aug. 20, 1957, in Springfield, to Harley T. Redtfeldt and Imogene Broyles Redtfeldt.

She grew up in Fall Creek and attended Lane Community College in Eugene.

She was employed as a retail sales clerk for most of her working career. She moved to Brookings eight years ago, and worked both in retail sales and as a home care provider for Senior and Disabled Services and Cardinal Services. She loved caring for senior citizens, and assisting them to live independently in their own homes.

She met George M. Fleek in Brookings and they were best friends and companions for the last seven years. They married June 29 of this year.

She was a high-spirited person with lots of "spunk" and energy. She loved animals, doing crafts and spending time with her family. Becoming a grandmother recently was a highlight of her life.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Shantell Goodright, Eugene; grandson, Alexander Goodright, Eugene; step-daughter, Patricia Maureen "Reenie" Fleek, Brookings; sister Debby Desoe, Reno, Nev. Also surviving are four nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to help with her final expenses may be sent to Karry Bonde, P.O. Box 1553, Brookings, OR 97415.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, 15803 Highway 101 S., Harbor. Rev. Curt Fox will officiate. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Margret E. Bloomquist

Margaret E. Bloomquist, 87, Tumwater, Wash., died July 2, 2002, at her home in Tumwater.

Mrs. Bloomquist was born June 20, 1915, in Hoquiam, Wash. to Oscar Olaf and Ogda (Wahlberg) Olson. She was raised in Hoquiam and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1932.

She worked for Wolf's Department Store in Hoquiam and Browers in Aberdeen, Wash.

She married Verner A. Bloomquist Aug. 7, 1938, in Hoquiam. The couple made their home in Hoquiam. In 1945, they purchased a lily bulb farm in Grayland. At the time it was the largest lily bulb farm in Washington. The property is now part of the Grayland State Park. Mr. Bloomquist died on May 26, 1982.

The family moved to Brookings in 1951 where she worked as a bookkeeper for Cal-Or Plywood Mill, Country Maid dairy in northern California and then for Coos Curry Electric Co-op in Brookings, retiring in 1980. She lived in Brookings until moving to Tumwater last month.

Mrs. Bloomquist enjoyed many handcrafts including hand quilting, knitting and embroidery. She was a charter member of the Azalea Quilters Guild of Brookings. She had been a member of Saron Evangelical Lutheran Church, a member and past president of the Victoria Guild, and a member and past president of the Children's Orthopedic Guild all of Hoquiam.

Survivors include son, R. Gordon "Sandy" Bloomquist and his wife, Bente Nielsen, Olympia, Wash.; granddaughter, Kira Brisson Bloomquist, Copenhagen, Denmark

Graveside services were held July 8 at Hoquiam, Washington Sunset Memorial Park.

The family suggests that donations be made to the Azalea Quilters Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 994, Brookings, OR 97415.

Arrangements under the direction of Coleman Mortuary, Hoquiam, Wash.
