Luther D. 'Lou' Austin

Luther D. "Lou" Austin Jr., 89, Brookings, died July 5, 2002, of natural causes at a local care facility.

Mr. Austin was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Lincoln, Neb., to Luther D. Austin Sr. and Helen B. Austin.

He moved to California as a boy, and was raised and educated in the San Francisco Bay area. He attended U.C.L.A. and majored in business administration.

He served in the U.S. Navy during and following World War II. He was honorably discharged May 26, 1952.

He was employed as a purchasing agent for several electronics companies in the Silicon Valley, and retired in 1984 as a head buyer for Litton Industries.

Mr. Austin was a member of the Palo Alto Masonic Lodge for many years. He enjoyed many outdoor activities and was a physically active person. He raced motorcycles into his 70's.

He met Georgia "Hazel" Austin and they were married Nov. 3, 1989, in Brookings.

He is survived by his wife, sons from a previous marriage, David S. Austin, Santa Clara, Calif., Richard A. Casey, Eugene, Mike L. Casey, San Jose, Calif., brother, Richard Austin, Brookings; stepson and daughter-in-law, Raymond A. and Claire Weeber of Paris, France. Also surviving are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson Foundation, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland, OR 97201

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St., Brookings. The U.S. Coast Guard will be scattering Mr. Austin's ashes at sea at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Bonnie E. Cooley

Bonnie E. Cooley, 87, Brookings, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, of natural causes at a local adult private care home.

Mrs. Cooley was born August 27, 1914, in Guthrie, Okla. to Louis and Ethel Shreck.

She was raised and educated in Guthrie, and later moved to Missouri, where she was a licensed Unity minister and pastored a church. Following this, Mrs. Cooley moved to the Bay area in California where she was employed as a medical secretary at a U.C.S.F. neuroscience laboratory in Santa Clara, Calif.

In the 1980's she met and married Howard Cooley. They moved to Brookings in 1983.

Teaching the gospel message of the Unity Church was important throughout Mrs. Cooley's adult life, and she continued to teach Unity classes and conduct weddings after moving to Brookings. She also loved to deep sea fish, hike, and dance at the Elk's Club, where she and Howard were members.

In l991, she was thrilled to discover she had half-siblings, after spending a lifetime thinking she was an only child. She had an opportunity to become acquainted with them shortly thereafter.

Mrs. Cooley was an outgoing and kind person who made friends easily and loved to help others.

She is survived by her husband; daughter, Marilyn Brand, Mo.; half-brothers, Miles Shreck, Okla., and Warren Shreck, MO.; half-sister, Betty Delaney, MO.; step-daughter, Marie Ryan, Pleasanton, Calif.; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Val Cooley, Fremont, Calif.; Clifford and Darlene Cooley, Newark, Calif.; Also surviving are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Mildred "Millie" Elizabeth Tableman

Mildred "Millie" Elizabeth Tableman, Crescent City, died July 11, 2002 in Crescent City.

She was born July 30, 1909 in Gatehel Tobin Township, Ind.

She was a 24-year resident of Del Norte County, having moved from Los Angeles in 1978. She was a member of the Crescent City Women's Club, Del Norte County Federated Republican Women.

Mrs. Tableman was also a member of the Star of the Sea Alter Society.

She is survived by daughter, Mary Ruth Rheinschild, Crescent City; granddaughters, Roberta Ann Hisiore and husband Ron, Crescent City; Laura Elizabeth Galbraith and husband Tom, McKinleyville, Calif.; great grandchildren, Veronica, Mitchel and Nicholas Hisiore.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold John Tableman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held July 15, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Joseph Catholic Church in Crescent City. Internment will take place at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.

The family prefers contributions to the Star of the Sea Alter Society, Crescent City Soroptimist, P.O. Box 991 or Del Norte County Federated Republican Women.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City.

Lawrence A. Kassa

Lawrence A. Kassa, 82, Brookings, died July 5, 2002 in Brookings of natural causes.

He was born March 5, 1920 in Goodridge, Minn. to Michal and Anna Kassa.

He grew up and attended school in Goodridge.

He moved to Brookings in 1952.

He married Geraldine Nov. 27, 1965 in Brookings.

He served in the U.S. Army 743rd tank battalion, company C. He served in Europe through five campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Kassa worked at South Coast Plywood in Brookings retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include daughter Sara Hayes, Brookings; granddaughter Andrea Roberts, Brookings; grandson Phillip Hayes, Brookings. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Kassa.

Funeral services will be July 15, at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Rd., Brookings. Rosary, 11:05 a.m., Mass 11:36 a.m. Father E. K. Ryan, O.P. officiating.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1301 Northcrest Dr., Crescent City, CA 95531.

Funeral arrangements under the arrangement of Litty Funeral Home.

Lamar E. "Dupe" Dupree

Lamar E. "Dupe" Dupree, 92, Gold Beach, died July 12, 2002, in a Brookings care facility of natural causes.

Mr. Dupree was born June 24, 1910, in Denver, Colo.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine, and was honorably discharged Aug. 15, 1945.

He married Darlene Nearhoff in 1947 in Winnemucca, Nev.

He spent much of his career painting communication relay stations in Alaska under government contract.

He retired in 1972.

He and his wife lived in Alaska for 30 years before moving to Gold Beach in 1984.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and devoted much of his retirement time to fishing.

He belonged to the Anchorage Masonic Lodge as both a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include his wife of Gold Beach; brother-in-law, Roger Nearhoff of Apache Junction, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. Mr. Dupree's ashes will be scattered with military honors by the U.S. Coast Guard Friday, July 19.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
