James Walter Harper Sr.

The graveside service for James Walter Harper Sr. will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Glenhaven Garden at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Harper, 91, of Central Point, died Sunday (April 15, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 7, 1909, in Arkansas, the son of Denton and Ida Harper. On Sept. 10, 1940, in Crescent City, Calif., he married Elma H. DeGaugue, who died in 1991. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1987 from Crescent City, Calif.

Mr. Harper was a timber faller in Northern California for most of his life.

Survivors include a son, David, Central Point; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Jim Jr.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

George A. Gregory Jr.

The graveside service for George Alfred Gregory Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National Cemetery Interment Shelter. Chaplain Earl Best of Providence Medford Medical Center Hospice will officiate.

Mr. Gregory, 69, of Prospect, died Friday (April 13, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Prospect Search and Rescue, P.O. Box 35, Prospect, OR 97536.

He was born July 18, 1931, in Bath, Pa., a son of George and Ellen Gregory. On Feb. 17, 1954, in Bethesda, Md., he married Regina (Len) Lenhausen, who died in 1986.

Mr. Gregory served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of chief warrant officer 3. While serving in the Army and working for the National Security Agency, he became an expert in cryptography. He retired from the Army in 1969 after 21 years. He received a Bronze Star and numerous other medals, including the National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1969 after retiring from the Army and returned to school, majoring in American and world history. He received a teaching degree from what is now Southern Oregon University. He lived in the Rogue Valley until 1980. He then resided in Florida, Hawaii, and in the Yukon Territory for a brief period before returning to the Rogue Valley in the 1990s.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282 in Florida and Post 6184 in Eagle Point, the American Legion Post 0470 in Eagle Point and the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

Mr. Gregory was an avid outdoorsman and Internet user. He enjoyed hunting morels, coin collecting and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Regina Horton, Ashland, Cheryl StockeBrand, Prospect, and Denise Poole, Portland; a son, George A. III, Klamath Falls; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Palmer Smith; and two sisters, Florence Witman and Grace Wucter.

Terrence Bruce Robinson

The graveside service for Terrence Bruce Robinson will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Jacksonville Cemetery.

Mr. Robinson, 47, of Medford, died Thursday (April 12, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center. The full obituary ran Sunday, April 15.

Russell 'Rusty' Sargent

Russell "Rusty" Bernard Sargent, 76, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (April 14, 2001) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A private service was held. Interment was at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Yuba City, Calif. In 1959, in Carson City, Nev., he married Jeannette Hays, who survives.

Mr. Sargent was a roofing contractor in the San Jose and Santa Cruz, Calif., areas for 45 years. Following his retirement, he moved to Grants Pass in 1990.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge in California and Grants Pass.

Mr. Sargent enjoyed fly fishing, traveling, helping his neighbors and could fix anything. He and his wife spent winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Chris, Grants Pass; a daughter, Cheryl Talley, Kalispell, Mont.; and a grandson.

Phillip John Bernard

Phillip John Bernard, 84, of Medford, died Sunday (April 15, 2001) at a local nursing home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born May 5, 1916, in Spooner, Wis. On Sept. 15, 1941, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he married Dorothie Gole Lauzon, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Bernard was a metal worker at Reynolds Metals in Troutdale from 1949 to 1978. He had also been very active in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. He moved to the Rogue Valley a year ago from Sandy.

He enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles and Scrabble.

Survivors include three sons, Edward F., Medford, Phillip J. Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Bruce, San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Jean Bush, Walker, Mich., and Helen Meyer, Beaverton; a brother, Louis, Ely, Minn.; a sister, Mary Kearney, Hibbing, Minn.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Janice Diane Fenning

The memorial service for Janice Diane Fenning will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point Community Bible Church.

Mrs. Fenning, 53, of Medford, died Monday (April 16, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center, of cancer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Janice Fenning Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Wells Fargo Bank, 1320 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born June 25, 1947, in Boise, Idaho, a daughter of Raymond and Marjorie Kinney. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from Washington, and graduated from Crater High School in 1965. She also attended Rogue Community College. On Aug. 16, 1991, in Yreka, Calif., she married Robin J. Fenning, who survives.

Mrs. Fenning was an escrow officer in the Rogue Valley.

She attended Eagle Point Community Bible Church.

Mrs. Fenning enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking, spending time with her family, and walking on the beach.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Jennifer D. Cleveland, Medford; a son, James D. Seals, Medford; a stepdaughter, Jana Bower, Casper, Wyo.; her parents, in Gold Hill; seven sisters, Suzanne Bohannan and Carole Eselin, both Medford, Kathy Roberts, Gold Hill, Judy Mellow, Central Point, Maurie Phipps, Portland, Marjorie Rainey and Patricia Piper, both Redding, Calif.; two brothers, Raymond C. Kinney Jr., Gold Hill, and Hiram Kinney, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Elmer W. Luschen

The memorial service for Elmer W. Luschen will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Luschen, 85, of Medford, died Sunday (April 15, 2001) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502, or to a favorite charity.

He was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Piedmont, Okla. He lived in Oklahoma City from 1915 to 1947, when he moved to Medford. On March 1, 1954, in Reno, Nev., he married Marella Jane Brockway, who survives.

Mr. Luschen worked for several construction companies, including Mewdall Construction, W.L. Moore, and Hutchins and Clark. He was also a volunteer at KSYS Channel 8.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and the Civil Air Patrol from 1952 to 1955.

Mr. Luschen was a member of the Medford Chamber of Commerce, the Antique Club, and the Computer Club. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 2067 and the Moose Lodge, both for more than 35 years. He was also a member of the Rogue Valley Knife and Fork Club, the American Legion, the Kiwanis and AARP.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Phillip, Medford; two daughters, Nancy Dickinson, Temple, Maine, and Yvonne Bruesch, Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon.

Catherine 'Kay' L. Edsall

A celebration of the life of Catherine "Kay" Louise Edsall will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hawthorne Inn and Suites in Ashland.

Mrs. Edsall, 93, of Butte Falls, formerly of Ashland, died Friday (April 13, 2001) in Butte Falls.

She was born July 2, 1907, in Hartford, Ind.. She moved to Ashland with her parents, John Riley and Charlotte Pittenger when she was 3, and lived there until 1940. She was one of the oldest living alumni of Ashland High School and had attended many reunions in the past 25 years. In 1940, she married Earl Edsall, and moved to the Klamath Basin for six years, then to Portland for four years, and to Yakima, Wash., for seven years.

Mrs. Edsall was actively involved in the Butte Valley Senior Citizens for many years as one of the founding members and as president for eight consecutive years.

An active member of the Dorris community since 1974, she moved to Round Lake in 1996, when she became ill, and lived with her granddaughter, Tami A. Tripp and her family. She later returned to Dorris to live with her daughter, Louise Mitchel.

Survivors include two sons, Harold R. Gillette, and Robert E. Edsall; a daughter, Cathleen Louise Mitchel; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil O. Gillette; her second husband, Earl K. Edsall; and a son, Virgil O. Gillette.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
