Lauren Arbor Reese

Lauren Arbor Reese, 89, of Rogue Valley Manor, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) in Medford, after a brief illness. A private service will be held later.

He was born Jan. 5, 1912, near Dodgeville, Wis. He received a bachelor's degree in 1935 and a master's degree in 1936 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and later trained for psychiatric social work at the University of Chicago. He married Winifred Stehr, who died in 1982, after 46 years of marriage. Two years later, he married Leta Stefflre, who survives. They lived in Escondido, Calif., for 10 years. They moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in 1997.

Mr. Reese worked for several social agencies. In 1945, he entered the new psychiatric program in vocational rehabilitation, first in Illinois, then Michigan. There he progressed to administrative position, retiring in 1972 after more than 25 years of service to the state of Michigan.

Following his retirement, he did extensive travel and research on family history, which led to publishing several family histories.

Mr. Reese was a Common Cause volunteer and a Democratic Party local activist. He enjoyed gardening and backpacking,

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Arthur, Bemidji, Minn., Allan, Stone Lake, Wis., and Wallace, Cerrillos, N.M.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bruce Allen Shackelford

The memorial service for Bruce Allen Shackelford will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Grants Pass. Pastor Dan Jocoy of Tri City Church of Christ will officiate.

Mr. Shackelford, 42, of Riddle, died Monday (April 16, 2001) at his home.

He was born April 20, 1958, in Grants Pass.

While living in Grants Pass, Mr. Shackelford worked for Carl's 4x4 and Jerry's Clutch and Transmission Repair in Grants Pass. While living in Riddle, he was a self-employed transmission mechanic.

He enjoyed restoring automobiles.

Survivors include his mother, Christina Shackelford, Roseburg; and a sister, Peggy Trone, Roseburg. He was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Shackelford.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Elbert 'Duke' L. Duncan

Elbert "Duke" L. Duncan, 79, of Central Point, died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at his home. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 1663, Medford, OR 97501, or the Southern Oregon Live Steamers, P.O. Box 1443, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born June 5, 1921, in Oak Hill, W.Va., a son of Alonzo and Ora Duncan. On July 7, 1946, in Somerville, Mass., he married Marion L. Palmer, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1962 from San Fernando, Calif.

Mr. Duncan was a mill worker in lumber mills. He retired from Double D Mill in Central Point.

He was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Duncan had been a member of the Oregon C.B. Radio Club since 1967. He enjoyed reading, watching wrestling, camping and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Daniel F., Medford; three daughters, Jeanne Wilkerson and Kelleigh R. Duncan, both of Medford, and Mary Lou Duncan-Farrell, Roseburg; a twin brother, Delbert L., San Fernando, Calif.; and five grandsons.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

MacDonald C. Devaney

MacDonald C. Devaney, of San Francisco, formerly of Medford, died March 25, 2001, in San Francisco. The memorial Mass was held April 3 at St. Brendan's Church in San Francisco.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's High School, 816 Black Oak Drive, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born in Cambridge, Idaho, the son of Henry F. and Edith Catherine MacDonald Devaney. He moved to Medford and attended St. Mary's Academy. He received a bachelor's degree in business from Oregon State University, and received his teaching credentials at San Francisco State University. He married Mary Gauvreay, who survives.

Mr. Devaney taught at Galleo High School for 26 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a sister, Genieve Howarth. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Clarke and Yvonne Dugan.

Marion Alice Wheeler

The graveside service for Marion Alice Wheeler will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens. Pastor Walt Ferris will officiate.

Mrs. Wheeler, 85, of Grants Pass, died Friday (April 20, 2001) at her home.

She was born July 31, 1915, in Barker, N.Y. She graduated from Taylor University in Upland, Ind., and received her master's degree from Buffalo State in New York. On Aug. 8, 1939, in Barker, N.Y., she married James Wheeler, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass from New York in 1956.

Mrs. Wheeler taught elementary school in city and county schools in Grants Pass. She retired from teaching in the late 1970s.

She was a member of the River Valley Community Church.

Mrs. Wheeler enjoyed writing poetry and teaching children.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Nancy Johnson, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Laurie Sanders, Grants Pass; two brothers, Richard Phillips, Modesto, Calif., and Charles Phillips, Lockport, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Marcel André Mercier

Private services were held for Marcel André Mercier.

Mr. Mercier, 63, of Cave Junction, died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Laconia, N.H. In June of 2000, he moved from Michigan to Cave Junction.

Mr. Mercier worked as a carpenter in the construction field until retiring in 1995. He had attended the St. Catherine Catholic Church in Riverside, Calif. Mr. Mercier enjoyed boating, camping, dirt biking and gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Wright, Cave Junction, and Vicki Lynn Mercier, Pelkie, Mich.; his mother, Flore Mercier, Quebec, Canada; two brothers; six sisters; and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Jean Mercier, in 1971, and his father, Edward Mercier.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives.

Betty Jane Wilson

Betty Jane Wilson, 77, of Shady Cove died Friday (April 20, 2001) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

No services are planned.

Mrs. Wilson was born June 18, 1923, in Madrid, Neb. On Oct. 9, 1954, in Germany, she married Aubrey "Bob" Wilson, who preceded her in death in 1995.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1996 from Soap Lake, Wash.

Mrs. Wilson served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1955. She was employed as a bookkeeper. Wilson was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed handcrafts and bowling, with a high series of 528. Mrs. Wilson also was a member of VFW Post No. 1833 in Shady Cove.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Scribner and Rosemary Parker, both of Minden. Nev.; and brother Jack Seiver of Shady Cove; eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Margaret Ebright Carey

The memorial service for Margaret Ebright Carey will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church in Lake Oswego.

Mrs. Carey, 66, of Lake Oswego, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Monday (April 23, 2001) in Lake Oswego.

Memorial contributions may be made to CASA of Clackamas County, 2125 Kaen Road, Oregon City, OR 97045, or New Avenues for Youth, 812 S.W. 10th Ave., Portland, OR 97205.

She was born May 24, 1934, in Berkeley, Calif., the daughter of Carroll M. "Ky" and Kathryn Doty Ebright. In 1989, she married Robert Carey, who survives.

Mrs. Carey was an artist. She was a longtime resident of the Rogue Valley and had recently moved to Lake Oswego.

She was known for her sense of humor. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Gregory Martin Hornecker, Denver, Mitchell Ebright Hornecker, Portland, and Charles Friedrick Hornecker III, San Francisco; a daughter, Kathryn Doty Hansen, Lake Oswego; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, Lake Oswego.
