Vivian Marie Coryell

The memorial service for Vivian Marie Coryell will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Chapel. Interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Coryell, 54, of Medford, died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Oregon Chapter, 1650 N.W. Naito Parkway, Suite 190, Portland, OR 97209.

She was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Roseburg. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1954, and attended Eagle Point High School. On Sept. 3, 1974, she married William H. Coryell Sr., who survives.

Mrs. Coryell was a social worker for Adult and Family Services. She was retired.

She enjoyed helping others and spending time with her family.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Sharry Mitchell, Central Point; two brothers, David Sinclair, Prospect, and Lemond Sinclair, White City; two sisters, Geana Duggins and Bobbie Applegate, both Prospect; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Billy; her parents, Boyd and Lil Sinclair; and a sister, Genalee Huffman.

Vera Ivora Johnson

Vera Ivora Johnson, 87, of Medford, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2001) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The memorial service has been held.

She was born April 15, 1913, in Laclede, Idaho, a daughter of Albert and Bernice Nowlin Sr. On March 7, 1945, in Superior, Mont., she married Percy Johnson, who survives. They lived in Medford from 1948-1957, when they moved to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska to homestead. They lived in Alaska from 1957-1993, and traveled the Alcan Highway more than 40 times. They moved to Congress, Ariz., in 1993 and returned to Medford in 1998 to retire.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker.

She enjoyed her family and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include six daughters, Bernice Miller, Cascade Locks, Wanda Hektner, Dutton, Mont., Donna McGahan, Nikiski, Alaska, Crystal McGahan, Chico, Calif., Ann Hart, Soldotna, Alaska, and Darlene Andherst, Lewiston, Idaho; two brothers, Albert Nowlin Jr., and Jack Nowlin; four sisters, Catherine, Betty, Fern and Margie; 25 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

LaVonne Hofstad

The graveside service for LaVonne Hofstad will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Hofstad, 74, of Hayward, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2001) in Medford, while visiting family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the AIDS Foundation, 733 Third Ave. 12th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10017, or the Leukemia Association, 6501 Macadam, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born July 2, 1926, in Caldwell, Idaho, the daughter of George and Rhoda (Armstrong) Newton. She was raised in Medford and graduated from Medford Senior High School. She moved to Hayward, Calif., in the 1950s. In 1956, in Oakland, Calif., she married Helmer J. Hofstad, who died in 1991.

Mrs. Hofstad was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hayward. She was active in the Hayward Senior Center and was a longtime volunteer at Kaiser Hospital.

Mrs. Hofstad enjoyed needlework, ceramics and reading "The Arts."

Survivors include two daughters, Terry Rosenberger and Sherrie McKinley, both Medford; a son, Thomas, Tracy, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Gladys Johnson

The memorial service for Gladys Johnson will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Ashland.

Mrs. Johnson, 90, of Ashland, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) in Talent at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Straw, after a month-long illness.

She was born Jan. 21, 1911, in Missouri, and spent her early life in Minnesota. On Feb. 4, 1929, in Renville, Minn., she married Leroy E. Johnson, who died in 1972.

The Johnsons farmed in Bottineau, N.D., Minnesota, and in Wisconsin and lived at times in Minneapolis. They followed their daughter to Pasadena, Calif., and lived there several years before returning to Minneapolis. Following her husband’s death, Mrs. Johnson returned to California, then moved to Ashland to live near her daughter.

Mrs. Johnson became a licensed practical nurse at age 52, and worked at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Minneapolis, St. Luke’s Hospital in Pasadena, and in home health care.

She also did volunteer work, supporting the farm workers’ boycotts in California, working at a soup kitchen in Pasadena, opposing the Vietnam War, working at Peace House in Ashland, and helping at Trinity Respite Center.

Mrs. Johnson was an active member of the United Methodist Church wherever she lived.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Straw, Talent; four sisters, Anna Mae Maranda, Lorraine Gish, Lorene Chilian, and Ruth Ufkus, all Minnesota; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, Medford.

W. Harry Elmore

A celebration of the life of W. Harry Elmore will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Rogue Valley Country Club.

Mr. Elmore, 82, of Medford, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at Farmington Square.

He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Bozeman, Mont. He married Jeanne M. (Boynton) Elmore, who survives.

Mr. Elmore worked for Commercial Property Investments.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John W., Medford; a daughter, Christy I. Jefferson; a brother, Bill Boynton; a sister, Ruth Kupersmit; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Donald Arthur Berg

The graveside service for Donald Arthur Berg will be at 10 a.m. today at Mountain View Cemetery, I.O.O.F. section. Pastor Robert Rodin, retired pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Medford, will officiate.

Mr. Berg, 75, of White City, died Jan. 12, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary Infirmary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, Or 97504.

He was born Aug. 21, 1925, in Grand Forks, N.D., the son of Arthur and Erma (Spornitz) Berg. He attended the Duluth branch of the University of Minnesota. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1948 from Thief River Falls, Minn.

Mr. Berg was a radio announcer in Ashland, Medford, Portland and Fairbanks, Alaska.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in England, France and Germany, and was active in the National Guard in Ashland.

Mr. Berg was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Ashland in earlier years, and in DeMolay in Minnesota.

He enjoyed music, Shakespearean theater and sports.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Bowling, Portland; two sisters, Barbara Adams, Katy, Texas, and Marilyn Torget, Cathlamet, Wash.

Robert ‘Bob’ Brown

The memorial service for Robert "Bob" Brown will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Veteran’s Honor Guard will provide military honors.

Mr. Brown, 79, of Medford, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Sams Valley. In December 1943, he married Lois Egelston, who died in 1993 after 50 years of marriage.

Mr. Brown worked for Medford Corp. from 1945 until his retirement in 1985.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, serving with the 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division as a ski-trooper. His duties included the care of pack animals needed for the advancement through the Italian Alps during World War II. He also participated in the Northern Apennines and Po Valley campaigns in Europe.

Following his retirement, he moved to Harbor, where he was a volunteer firemen with the Harbor Fire Department. He also worked as a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) volunteer until 1998, transporting veterans in need of medical care from Brookings to the Eagle Point Veterans Hospital, and continued his involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a son, Robin, Central Point, a daughter, Sharon Charles, Ruch; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
