Marie Allen

The funeral for Marie Allen will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Perl-Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford. Interment will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, Calif.

Mrs. Allen, 97, of Central Point, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at her home. She had lived at Farmington Square in Medford for the past couple of years.

She and a twin sister were born July 23, 1903, in Omaha, Neb.

Mrs. Allen moved to Central Point to raise her family on Snowy Butte Lane when little else existed in the area. After marrying her third husband, Maj. Chauncey Lee Pierce, she moved away for a number of years. Following his death, she married Walter H. Allen and lived in Roseburg before returning to Central Point to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Parnell "James" and Evelyn Pierce.

Mrs. Allen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was known for her sense of humor.

Survivors include a son, Parnell "James" Pierce, Central Point; a stepdaughter, Marjorie Martin-Iverness, in Florida; more than 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Mr. Peterson, Parnell Norton, Major Chauncey L. Pierce, and Walter H. Allen.; two sons, Harold and Parnell J. Pierce; and her twin sister, Marian Toy.

Arrangements: Perl-Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Edward Watson

The funeral for Medford native and longtime resident Edward Watson will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lodi, Calif. Dr. Norman Mowery of the First United Methodist Church and Woodbridge Masonic Lodge will officiate.

Mr. Watson, 75, of Lodi, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at his home following an extended illness.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

He was born Nov. 20, 1925 in Medford and lived there most recently from 1994 to 1997. His wife, Lee Watson, of Lodi, survives.

Mr. Watson was employed by Coca Cola Inc. for 25 years until retirement. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II as a tail-gunner on B-25 airplanes. He was active in the First United Methodist Church, and the Woodbridge Masonic Lodge No. 131 F. & A.M. and the Lodi Masonic Lodge No. 256 F. & A.M. He was also a lifetime member of the Warrenville Masonic Lodge No. 3 A.F. & A.M. in Jacksonville.

In addition, Mr. Watson was past secretary/treasurer of the Tokay Shrine Club, the Jackson County Shrine Club in Oregon, past president of the Warm Springs Golf Club and director of the Home Organ Festival for 20 years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five sons, Dan Murphy, and Kirk and Chris Watson, all Lodi; Rick Murphy, Copperopolis, Calif., and Mark Watson, Nevada; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

James I. Melton

James I. Melton, 82, of Medford, died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001), at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Auxiliary Fund, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Maryville, Mo., a son of Alfred and Mabel Melton. He graduated from Maryville High School in 1936, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He moved to Hemet, Calif., in 1936. On June 28, 1941, in Burbank, Calif., he married Ruth E. Garven, who survives.

Mr. Melton worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, Calif., from 1939 to 1944. He returned to Lockheed after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was vice president/manager of Coast Hardware, Inc. In Studio City, Calif. until 1951. From 1951 to 1953, he was a wholesale salesman for Budrow Hardware in Los Angeles.

In 1953, Mr. Melton founded Lancaster-Palmdale Savings & Loan in Lancaster, Calif. He served as vice president until 1959. He also served as president of the Antelope Valley School Board Association. In 1958, he founded and became charter president of the Antelope Valley Junior College Patrons Association. He was a member of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, was an executive committee member of the Lancaster Elks and Masonic Lodge, was president of the Lancaster Rotary Club, and a member of other Rotary clubs for 39 years.

In 1959, he accepted the position of vice president/manager at the Savings & Loan in Sacramento, Calif. In 1965, he became president of Seacoast Savings and Loan in Encinitas, Calif. From 1967 to 1973, he was president of Santa Maria Savings and Loan in Santa Maria, Calif. In Santa Maria, he served on the City Planning Commission and was president of the Santa Maria City Solid Waste Disposal Corp. He was also a board member of the Santa Barbara County Visiting Nurses Association, and was president of the Santa Maria City Developers Association in 1971. He was a member of the Elks, the Masons and the Santa Maria Club, and was a board member of the Chamber of Commerce.

In 1973, Mr. Melton became vice president of Equitable Savings and Loan in Portland. He transferred to the Medford branch in 1974, where he served as vice president/manager, retiring in 1983.

In Medford, he was a member of the Elks, the Moose Lodge, the Masons, Scottish Rite, Hillah Shrine, Jackson and Josephine County Shrine Clubs and was president of Medford Linebackers in 1978.

Mr. Melton enjoyed fishing in the High Sierras from Lone Pine to Twin Lakes in Bridgeport, Calif., and visiting national parks in 11 U.S. western states, as well as in Alberta and British Columbia in Canada.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Pat Roberts, Shady Cove, two sons, Jim, Temecula, Calif. and Randy, U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. A sister, Thelma Tingen, died in 1968.

Effie M. Whitney

The graveside service for Effie M. Whitney will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Whitney, 79, of Rogue River, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Hermiston. She moved to Rogue River in 1973 from California.

Ms. Whitney was a member of Zenia Grange in California. In Oregon she volunteered for the Rogue River Senior Center and as a driver for Oregon State Human Resources.

She enjoyed gardening, painting, fishing and camping.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Thomas, Rogue River, and Sandra Higginson, Gooding, Idaho; a son, George Whitney, Iredell, Texas; a sister, Betti Tyler, Placerville, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. Her former husband, Calvin Whitney, died in 1997.

Arrangements: Hull and Hull Funeral Directors, grants Pass.

Thelma Wolfe

The memorial service for Thelma Wolfe will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Pastor Jack Bacon of Shady Cove Assembly of God will officiate. Private interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Wolfe, 87, of Eagle Point, died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) in Eagle Point.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

Mrs. Wolfe was born July 14, 1913, near Gold Rey Dam in Central Point, the daughter of Vernon and Margaret Conley. On April 12, 1942, in Dunsmuir, Calif., she married Donald C. Wolfe, who survives.

Mrs. Wolfe was a waitress at the Palace Cafe from the late 1930s to 1942. She managed the kitchen at Walker Elementary School in Ashland from 1952 to 1969.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Wolfe enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and traveling, and had spent the past 10 winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Survivors, in addition to husband, include a daughter, Sandra Millard, Eagle Point; a brother, Melvin Conley, Lakehead, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Conley.

Luis E. Plazolles

The funeral for Luis E. Plazolles will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Liam Cary of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate.

Mr. Plazolles, 83, of Medford died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Hearthstone.

He was born Sept. 10, 1917, in Lima, Peru. On March 6, 1944, in Lima, he married the former Ana Maria Dapino, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Peru.

Mr. Plazolles was a salesman for Polly’s Packing Service, which are the agents for Allied Van Lines in Peru. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and in Peru was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts and the YMCA.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, music, swimming, camping and dancing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Ada L. Hodgen, Gold Hill, and Ana Maria Salaverry, Central Point; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bill Barton Fisher

William "Bill" Barton Fisher, 83, of Medford, died Thursday (Jan. 11 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

Mr. Fisher was born on April 15, 1917, in Rigby, Idaho. On Feb. 14, 1938, in Long Beach, Calif., he married Amy Elm, who died in 1988.

Mr. Fisher moved from Southern California to the Rogue Valley in 1990.

For 30 years, Mr. Fisher was a salesman with Procter & Gamble, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed golf and sporting events.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne B., Medford, and Steve, Gardnerville, Nev.; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
