Donald Murray Cowan

The memorial service for Donald Murray Cowan will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Ashland.

Mr. Cowan, 84, of Ashland, died Aug. 24, 2000, in Long Beach, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 8196 S.W. Hall Blvd., Suite 103, Beaverton, OR 97008-6411, or the Bear Creek Greenway Foundation, P.O. Box 4561, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 30, 1916, in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, a son of the Rev. Hugh and Elizabeth Jean (Wood) Cowan. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1947 from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and a master’s degree in 1965 from what is now Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

On Aug. 25, 1950, in New Westminster, B.C., Canada, he married Diane Stushnoff, who survives.

Mr. Cowan was an associate boy’s work secretary at the Broadview YMCA in Toronto from 1940 to 1947. From 1947 to 1961, he was the YMCA general secretary in New Westminster, British Columbia. In Oregon, he was the general secretary for the YMCA in Ashland from 1961 to 1973. and then worked as a real estate salesperson and broker in Ashland from 1973 to 1981.

He was a member of the Kiwanis, Copeland Budge Chapter YMCA retirees, and the Rental Owners Association.

Mr. Cowan enjoyed music and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, David, Midland, Texas, Dan, Lake Oswego, Derek, Cumberland, British Columbia, and Douglas, Coburg; a brother, Alan, Ottowa, Ontario, Canada; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Arrangements: Penttila’s Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach, Wash.

Glen Randolph Van Horn

Glen Randolph Van Horn, 91, of Medford, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Jan. 6, 1909, in Hollis, Okla. On March 26, 1950, in Reno, Nev., he married Pauline E. True, who died in 1996.

Mr. Van Horn was a conductor with Southern Pacific Railroad for 28 years, retiring in 1975. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Eugene in 1975.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Shields, Medford; a brother, Ted W. Cope, Florence; and two sisters, Lela Walker, North Bend, and Billie Reed, Alameda, Calif. A son, Charles Richard, preceded him in death in 1938.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Phyllis M. Botts

Phyllis M. Botts, 72, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at the Ashland Community Hospital.

A private inurnmant of cremains will be at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944, Bob Wagner Fund, P.O. Box 569, Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Enterprise to Floyd and Ethel (Eggleson) Zollman. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1945.

On Feb. 11, 1946, in LaGrande, she married Bradford B. Botts. They moved to Ashland in 1947.

Mrs. Botts worked as a dental assistant for 25 years for Dr. Burdick before retiring. She enjoyed playing bridge, flower gardening and was a long time member of the Ladies Elks.

Survivors include her husband Brad; sons Monte and Craig, both of Ashland; four brothers, Orville Zollman, Medford, Kenneth Zollman, Peoria, Ariz., Bud Zollman and Myrle Zollman, both of Joseph. She was preceeded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Phyllis Lucille Johnson

A celebration of life for Phyllis Lucille Johnson will be held at 10 a.m. today, at the Royal Oaks Club House at the Royal Oaks Mobile Park at 4069 S. Pacific Highway, Medford.

Mrs. Johnson, 85, of Medford, died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1180 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born on April 2, 1915, in Eleva, Wis. to John William and Carrie Jackson.

On Sept. 13, 1982, in Reno, Nev., she married Charles Johnson, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and spending time with her dog.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Woodriff, Sequim, Wash.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Ruby ‘Irene’ Goodwin

Ruby "Irene" Goodwin, 91, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass. No service is planned.

She was born Nov. 4, 1908, in Wetumka, Okla. On July 26, 1927, in Tecumseh, Okla., she married Noel Goodwin, who preceded her in death. She moved to Southern Oregon in 1990 from Stockton, Calif.

Mrs. Goodwin was a member of the Rogue River congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She enjoyed crocheting baby sets, cooking and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Duane, Rogue River; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives.

Todd John Lawton

The memorial service for Todd John Lawton will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ascension Lutheran Church in Medford. Jack Moore will officiate. A reception will follow at the Lawton home.

Mr. Lawton, 22, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) in Missoula, Mont.

He was born May 30, 1978, in Medford, a son of John and Claudia Lawton. He lived in the Rogue Valley all his life.

Mr. Lawton was a 1996 graduate of North Medford High School and a recent graduate of the University of Montana, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta.

He enjoyed snow skiing and water sports.

Survivors include his parents, John and Claudia (Toombs) Lawton, Medford; two brothers, Travis and Tanner, both Medford; and his grandparents, Jesse Toombs, Pendleton; Aleathea Lawton, Salem; and Margaret and Sam Cooley, Portland.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Dorothy McConochie

The graveside service for Dorothy McConochie will be at 2 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. McConochie, 81, of Medford, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Dorothy Stephenson on Oct. 15, 1918, in Merrill.

On Jan. 11, 1937, in Medford, she married R. Bert McConochie, who died in 1984. They lived in Butte Falls for many years, moving to Willow Lake in 1954.

The McConochies operated the Willow Lake fishing resort until 1962. They lived in Rogue River for several years and then moved to Prospect. Following her husband’s death in 1984, she moved to Horizon Mobile Village in Medford.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Central Point and the Presbyterian Church in Phoenix.

Survivors include two daughters, Ramona "Mickie" McKnight, and Dixie Bradford, both Medford; a brother, James Vernon Stephenson; two sisters, Charline Putnam and Ann Yorton; four grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
