Frank H. Jenkins Jr.

Frank Henry Jenkins Jr., 78, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 7, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 11, 1921, in Peoria, Ill.

On Oct. 5, 1945, in Inglewood, Calif., he married Esther Christiansen, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1961 from Southern California.

Mr. Jenkins worked as a carpenter, retiring in 1980.

He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.

Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Medford Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and was a former member of the Medford Moose and the Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Donna Lundell and Thelma Kayser, both Medford; two sons, Frank H. III, Central Point, and Larry, Wimer; two sisters, Betty Twedell, Central Point, and Mildred Jenkins, Medford; two brothers, Robert, Medford, and Clarence, Reno, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer; and two sisters, Thelma Jenkins and Frances Herdliska.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home.

Vern Paul Bale

The memorial service for Vern Paul Bale will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Veterans for Veterans will provide military honors.

Mr. Bale, 81, of Rogue River, died Thursday (March 2, 2000) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Attn: Memorial/Honor Program FH, One St. Jude Place Building, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552.

He was born July 22, 1918, in San Francisco. He grew up in Riverside, Calif., where he attended Poly High School and Riverside City College.

Mr. Bale was an electrical lineman with the Department of Defense at March Air Force Base until his retirement in 1973. He moved to Rogue River from Riverside, Calif., in 1973.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in the Army and the Army Air Force during World War II. He participated in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and attained the rank of sergeant. He was discharged in 1945, but returned to Army service in 1950 during the Korean War.

Mr. Bale was a member of the Purple Heart Club and served in Rogue River's first Citizens' Police Academy.

Survivors, include his wife of 53 years, Margaret Kathleen Bale, Rogue River; two sons, Michael and James, both Rogue River; two daughters, Patricia and Theresa Bale, both Rogue River; an adopted daughter, Debbie Guss, San Diego; six grandchildren; three adopted grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two adopted great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Robert W. Cochran

The graveside service for Robert William Cochran will be at 1 p.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery. His daughter, Betty Wyren, will officiate.

Mr. Cochran, 79, of Medford, died Saturday (March 4, 2000) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9320 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Suite 140, Portland, OR 97219.

He was born April 29, 1920, in Newton, N.C.

Mr. Cochran was an iron worker until his retirement. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1987 from Redwood City, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was at Pearl Harbor during the attack.

Mr. Cochran was an avid photographer, a rock hound and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Wyren, Burlingame, Calif.; and a sister, Dorothy Workman, Newton, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; and a sister, Margaret Sigman.

Clinton L. Swanson

Clinton Lawrence Swanson, 68, of Shady Cove, died Sunday (March 5, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1172, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 19, 1931, in Turlock, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989, from Napa, Calif.

On Aug. 7, 1998, in Medford, he married Elizabeth L. Green, who survives.

Mr. Swanson was a salesman and truck driver for Mother's Cookies, retiring in 1989.

He was a volunteer at the fish hatchery.

Mr. Swanson was a member of the Northern California Bakery Drivers Union.

He enjoyed dancing, driving in the hills and the outdoors.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Karen Turner, Sacramento, Calif., Linda Niles, in Washington, and Eileen Lloyd, in California; a brother, Elton, in California; a sister, Jan Auglair, Lafayette, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Oval Marie Clark

The memorial service for Oval Marie Clark will be at 2 p.m. today at Northridge Center, 3737 S. Pacific Highway, Medford. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Clark, 86, of Medford, died Monday (March 6, 2000) at her home.

She was born Oval Smith on Dec. 10, 1913, in Quinton, Okla.

On April 12, 1957, in Roseburg, she married Ray Clark, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Roseburg 56 years ago.

Mrs. Clark was a school teacher for several years. She retired from what is now Southern Oregon University, where she was a supervisor in the maintenance department.

She was a caregiver at several nursing homes and at the Rogue Valley Manor.

Mrs. Clark enjoyed fishing, camping, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Melba Saylor, Surprise, Ariz., Candy Clark, Clarkdale, Ariz., and Rayetta Clark, San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, F.C. "Skeeter" Baird, in January 2000; a son, Larry Simmons; and three brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Helen Esther Wright

The memorial service for Helen Esther Wright will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, North Congregation in Medford. Paul Mather will officiate.

Mrs. Wright, 82, of Medford, died Thursday (March 2, 2000) at a foster care home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501, or to a favorite charity.

She was born Nov. 28, 1917, in Minneapolis, a daughter of Edward and Roselia (Locklund) Shaffer.

On May 25, 1946, in Los Angeles, she married Harry E. Wright, who died in 1981. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1985 from Los Angeles.

Mrs. Wright enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and flowers.

Survivors include two sons, James, and Harry Edward, both Medford; a brother, Ed Shaffer; a sister, Lillian Olson; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, baby girl Wright; and a sister, Mabel Shaffer, in 1994.
