Joan Rose Bailey

Joan Rose Bailey, 74, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 27, 1999) at her home in Corvallis. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to Reams Chapter of Eastern Star or the First Christian Church of Corvallis in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, OR 97330.

She was born Joan Rose Denny on July 31, 1924, in Medford, a daughter of Augustus and Della Rose Warren Denny.

Mrs. Bailey grew up in Medford and Roseburg. As a young woman she packed pears during the summers. Later she was employed with the Jackson County Tax Office and eventually became the Jackson County Deputy Tax collector until her retirement in 1986.

She was a past Worthy Matron of Reams Chapter of Eastern Star in Medford. She was a member of St. Mary's Chapter Eastern Star and the First Christian Church in Corvallis.

She enjoyed needlework, gardening, sewing and bowling.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Bailey, Coos Bay, and Dennis Bailey, Klamath Falls; a daughter, Carolyn Evans, Corvallis; a brother, Ralph Denny, Roseburg; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: McHenry Funeral Home, Corvallis.

Stella L. Sixkiller

The funeral for Stella L. Sixkiller will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Ashland First Baptist Church. Pastor Don Easlon of Calvary Baptist Church of Ashland will officiate. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sixkiller, 83, of Phoenix, died Thursday (Feb. 25, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501 or to a local hospice.

She was born Stella Hitcher on Aug. 19, 1915, in Pawhuska, Okla., and was raised in Oklahoma.

On Oct. 18, 1948, in Delta, Colo., she married Alex Sixkiller, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1953, then to Phoenix in 1990.

Mrs. Sixkiller worked at Bear Creek Corp. for 10 years and was a dorm mother at Southern Oregon University for 18 years. She retired in 1974.

She enjoyed sports, especially Ashland High School and SOU sporting events.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Sonny Sixkiller, Seattle, and John L. Rhodes, Portland; two daughters, George Anna Counts, Phoenix, and Peggy Parent, Cottonwood, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Betty Joy Kimball

Betty Joy Kimball, 67, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Betty Kimball College Scholarship for Girl Athletes, Ashland High School, 201 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born April 14, 1931, in Trent.

Ms. Kimball received a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Oregon.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1963 from Eugene.

Ms. Kimball was a physical education teacher and coach for Ashland High School from 1968 until her retirement in 1989.

She was named Oregon High School Coach of the Year, Volleyball Coach of the Year, Soroptimist Woman of the Year, and received the National Association of Girls and Women's Sports Pathfinder Award.

She was a member of the National Education Association, Oregon Education Association, and the American and Oregon associations of health, physical education, recreation and dance.

Survivors include her companion, Joanne Widness, Ashland; and a sister, Jeannette Kimball, Eugene. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kendall Kimball in 1998.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Peter G. McDonald

The funeral for Peter George McDonald will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary Catholic Chapel, White City. The Rev. Joseph Shirey will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. McDonald, 89, of White City, died Thursday (Feb. 25, 1999) at the VA Domiciliary.

He was born Feb. 14, 1910, in St. Paul.

Mr. McDonald served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a grocery clerk and worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

Mr. McDonald enjoyed golf.

Survivors include a niece, Virginia R. Duerr, Lebanon.

Mary Esther Davis Lahr

The graveside service for Mary Esther Davis Lahr will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Christian Church of Ashland.

Mrs. Lahr, 80, formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) in John Day. Her home was in Long Creek.

She was born Mary Davis on May 31, 1918, in Bend. Five years later, the family traveled by covered wagon from Bend to the Rogue Valley.

Mrs. Lahr grew up in the Table Rock area and graduated from Sams Valley School in 1937. She then moved to Ashland and earned a teaching certificate from Southern Oregon Normal School.

She taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Cooper and later at the Ruch School.

After teaching elementary school for nine years, she married Jacob P. Lahr. They lived in Ashland for 40 years.

Mrs. Lahr was an active member of the Christian Church of Ashland for more than 50 years.

After moving to Wimer to be near their family, the Lahrs attended Gold Hill Christian Church and later were members of Redwood Christian Church of Grants Pass.

In 1992, they moved to Long Creek with their daughter, where they were members of Long Creek Community Church. Mr. Lahr died in November 1997.

Survivors include daughter Lois Reeder, Long Creek; a son, Dale, Grants Pass; two sisters, Olive Dooms and IdaBelle White; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Frances E. Martin

The funeral for Frances Elizabeth Martin will be held Monday at Springfield Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will be in Springfield Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Martin, 87, formerly of Ashland, died Friday (Feb. 26, 1999) in Eugene, where she was living.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kennel Club, 51 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10010.

She was born Feb. 28, 1911, in Medford, a daughter of William and Katherine Bennett.

On Jan. 28, 1939, in Shady Cove, she married Leo Martin, who survives.

Mrs. Martin lived in Ashland for 53 years before moving to Eugene one month ago.

She was a cook and pastry chef at The Palace in Ashland.

Mrs. Martin bred and showed purebred Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Pekinese dogs, many of which were champions.

She was a member of the Ashland First Baptist Church and a charter member of the Rogue Valley Kennel Club. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and quilting.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Ann McIntyre, LaGrande, Leona Graham, North Bend, and Sarah Ezell, Eugene; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Arrangements: Springfield Memorial Funeral Home.

Elwyn L. Cochrane

The memorial service for Elwyn Lorraine Cochrane will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Medford Southwest Church of the Nazarene, 1481 S. Columbus Ave. The Rev. Don Hildebrand will officiate. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Cochrane, 61, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

He was born March 8, 1937, in Grants Pass, a son of Gordon W. and Lela M. Dodson Cochrane.

Mr. Cochrane served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1959.

On June 28, 1963, in Grants Pass, he married Rita Louise King, who survives. They moved to Medford in 1969 from Grants Pass.

Mr. Cochrane was a truck driver until retiring in 1993.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Medford Post 1833, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Sharon Gulrich, Medford, and Sandra Szpynda, Ridgecrest, Calif.; a brother, E. Laverne, Descanso, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Robert Lloyd Harra

Robert Lloyd Harra, 54, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (Feb. 24, 1999) at his home. A private service is planned.

He was born May 4, 1944, in Santa Cruz, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992.

Mr. Harra enjoyed gardening, animals and fishing.

Survivors include a brother, Richard, Eagle Point; and a sister, Claudia McMurry, Franklin, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Ruth L. Harra.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
