Laura Kiser Smith

Laura Kiser Smith, 75, of Phoenix, died Monday (Feb. 8, 1999) at her home. The memorial service will be held later. Private interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Flights, 3650 Biddle Road, No. 14, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Laura Kiser Polk on May 20, 1923, in Tennant, Calif. Her family moved to Ashland when she was 2 years old.

Mrs. Smith was the bow making department supervisor at Harry & David for 40 years. She also worked in basket weaving.

She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Rose Kiser, Phoenix; two sons, Allen L. Kiser, Portland, and Arthur D. Kiser, Murphy; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Smith, in 1998; and by a brother, Arthur B. Polk.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Kenneth R. Holzman

Kenneth Richard Holzman, 67, of Bandon, formerly of Central Point, died Monday (Feb. 8, 1999) at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene, 601 S. Front St., Creswell, OR 97426.

He was born May 6, 1931, in Chicago.

In 1957, in Chicago, he married Sally Gottlieb. They later divorced.

Mr. Holzman was a stockbroker for E.F. Hutton. He was also president of Modern Button in Los Angeles.

He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in economics.

Mr. Holzman was a member of Laubach Literacy Action, and an honorary member of the Oregon State Sheriff's Association.

He enjoyed walking with his dogs, Jimmie and Rom, entertaining, gardening and bowling.

Survivors include a daughter, Tracy Holzman, Richmond, Calif.; two sons, David, Orange County, Calif., and Daniel, Pinole, Calif.; two brothers, Robert, Del Mar, Calif., and Donald, Paris, France.

Arrangements: Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service, Eugene.

Leonard James Crook

Leonard James Crook, 42, of White City, died Tuesday (Feb. 9, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Missions Projects Fund or Youth Ministries Fund, Trail Christian Fellowship, 18881 Highway 62, Shady Cove, OR 97539.

He was born Sept. 14, 1956, in Detroit. He moved to the Rogue Valley from California in January.

Mr. Crook enjoyed music.

Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Ann Crook, White City; a son, Leonard James Jr., Los Angeles; his mother, Edna Eyestone, White City; a brother, Michael, Reseda, Calif; and three sisters, Mary Crook, White City, Michelle Crook, Reseda, Calif., and Rita

Evans, Meridian, Idaho. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Robert N. Thiel

Robert N. Thiel, 82, of Ashland, died Friday (Feb. 5, 1999) at Ashland Community Hospital. A private service is planned. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the home of his daughter, Gretchen Thiel, 251 Village Park Drive, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Oct. 4, 1916, in Waukesha, Wis.

In March 1942, he married Mary Louise Johnson, who died in 1975.

Mr. Thiel served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1962 as a chief personnelman and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. From 1962 to 1981, he worked for other government agencies, including 14 years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Jacksonville, Fla. He retired in 1981, and moved to Ashland in 1997.

He enjoyed golf and won many amateur championships. He also enjoyed dancing, people and life.

Survivors include a daughter, Gretchen Thiel, Ashland; a son, Robert Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two sons, John and Jeffrey.

`Pat' Schafer

Elsie Louise "Pat" Schafer, 87, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Feb. 8, 1999) at Royale Gardens in Grants Pass. The memorial service will be held in Braden River Cemetery, in Bradenton, Fla. Inurnment will be in Braden River Cemetery.

She was born Elsie Louise Walter on Oct. 18, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

On June 17, 1932, in Brooklyn, she married George A. Schafer, who died in 1975. She moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from Bradenton, Fla.

Mrs. Schafer was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn S. Roeske, Gold Hill, and Patricia A. Schafer, Palmetto, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Alyce Mae Green

Alyce Mae Green, 90, of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 8, 1999) at her home. A private service was held.

She was born Alyce Mae Tintinger on Feb. 18, 1908, in Big Timber, Mont.

On May 22, 1967, in Reno, Nev., she married Gordon R. Green, who died in 1990. She moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from Mesa, Ariz.

Mrs. Green, a homemaker, was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert McMullen; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Gail Lynn Parks

Gail Lynn Parks, 54, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service will be held at a later date.

She was born Gail Lynn Pierce on Sept. 9, 1944, in Eugene. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Lewiston, Idaho 20 years ago.

Mrs. Parks was a licensed practical nurse. She enjoyed reading and writing, telling stories, listening to music, and watching the news.

Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Smith, Medford, Doneena Caster, Eugene, and Cherie Diamond, Bakersfield, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

William L. Buchanan

The memorial service for William LeRoy Buchanan will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Central Point Ward Building, 2305 Taylor Road, Central Point. Bishop Bret Mitchell of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Central Point Ward, will officiate.

Mr. Buchanan, 68, of Central Point, died Monday (Feb. 8, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born April 27, 1930 in La Grande.

On June 8, 1956, in Medford, he married Wilma I. Jones, who survives.

Mr. Buchanan was a mill worker with KOGAP.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Buchanan was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2093, and of the Central Point Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Lowyne E. Smith, Medford; two sisters, Juneita Satterlee, Central Point, and Eileen Sundby, White City; and a grandson.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Ray Lee Grissom

The graveside service for Ray Lee Grissom will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Rev. Monte Love of the Calvary Temple Church in Central Point will officiate.

Mr. Grissom, 80, of Central Point, died Sunday (Feb. 7, 1999) at his home.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1918, in Donovan, Ark.

In January 1947, he married Virginia Fry, who survives. They moved to Southern Oregon from Washington after their marriage.

Mr. Grissom worked for Boise Cascade in White City for more than 30 years, retiring in 1980.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1946. During World War II, he served on the USS Alabama until it was decommissioned.

Mr. Grissom enjoyed gardening, hunting and building his own home.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Richard, Thomas, William and Robert; three daughters, Alice Johnston, Marlene Martin and Colleen Miller; and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis McIlwaine; and a grandson, Roger Grissom.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Valley Chapel.
