Clemmie Irene Ryan

The service for Clemmie Irene Ryan will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel.

Mrs. Ryan, 76, of Brookings, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at the Life Care Center in Coos Bay.

She was born Clemmie Irene Harkey on Sept. 7, 1922, in Cochise County, Ariz.

On April 3, 1944, in Tucson, Ariz., she married Gerald N. Ryan, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Los Angeles.

Mrs. Ryan was a claims supervisor for 11 Western states for the FAA.

She was president of the Women's 500 Bowling Club from 1968 to 1972. In Arizona, she was ranked No. 1 in tennis at one time. She also was on the table tennis team that was No. 1 in the U.S. in 1959. She belonged to the Smooth Dancers from 1952 to 1962.

Mrs. Ryan was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.

She enjoyed dancing, knitting, crocheting and making beaded dresses.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a cousin, Mirna H. Mitchell, in California.

Friends may pay their respects from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford.

John William Jones

John William Jones, 84, formerly of Ashland, died Jan. 28, 1999, in Eureka, Calif. His home was in Rio Dell, Calif.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday.

He was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Cameron, Mo.

Mr. Jones lived in Ashland for 60 years before moving to California two years ago.

He was a millworker at McGrew Brothers in Ashland.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Jones enjoyed music, singing and working.

Survivors include two sons, Mel, Medford, and Carl Eugene, Fort Bragg, Calif.; two daughters, Kim Chandler, White City, and Emmie Jones, Portland; two stepsons, Mel Wallace, Brookings, and Jim Wallace, Roseburg; a brother, Melvin, Cameron; two sisters, Betty Ann Burnett and Margaret Cook, both Cameron; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Buetta, died in 1982.

Arrangements: Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka, Calif.

Eula Maude Wentjar

Eula Maude Wentjar, 92, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at her home at Heritage Crossings. No service is planned.

She was born Eula Maude Lower on June 16, 1906, in Kansas.

In 1938, in Wyoming, she married Ernest S. Wentjar, who died in 1979.

Mrs. Wentjar was an active volunteer "Pink Lady" at Rogue Valley Medical Center. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed golf.

Winifred Langston

The memorial service for Winifred "Lucille" Gibson Foster Langston will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Siskiyou Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford. The Rev Stan Johnson of West Main Church of Christ will officiate.

Mrs. Langston, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson County Library Services, 413 West Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Winifred Gibson in Ogden, Utah. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Utah in 1944.

In 1945, in Medford, she married Donovan Foster, who preceded her in death. She then married John Langston, who died in 1992.

Mrs. Langston was a professional secretary and was a second runner-up for International Secretary of the Year in 1976. She was the first secretary to the first juvenile officer of Jackson County and served as acting juvenile officer on several occasions. She also worked for the Veterans Administration for 25 years, retiring in 1981.

She and her husband, John, operated Dell's Hamburgers on Sixth Street for 36 years.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Langston started her own business, Winer Publishing. She was the author of the books "Tourist Travel Treats Oregon/ Northern California" and "Tippy Tail The Gentle Gray Whale. She also wrote numerous newspaper and magazine articles.

Mrs. Langston received her Associate of Arts degree in 1996.

She was active in Laubach Literacy, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, and the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. She held the office of president, vice president and numerous chairwomanships with the Medford League of Women Voters, and was one of the early members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was also a charter member of the Professional Secretarial, now the Professional Secretaries Association, and the Medford Organnaires. She volunteered with Providence Medford Medical Center, and had been a charter member of the Circuit Guardianship Visitor as a volunteer and a Juvenile Court volunteer.

Survivors include a daughter, Lori Langston Thomas, Medford; two sons, Scott Langston and T.G. Foster, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters; a brother; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Gladys May Freeman

The graveside service for Gladys May Freeman will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Canyonville Masonic Cemetery, Canyonville. Paul Mather of the Jehovah's Witnesses will officiate.

Mrs. Freeman, 89, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6915 S.W. Macadam, No. 130, Portland, OR 97219.

She was born Gladys May Barrow on Aug. 30, 1909, in Linton, N.D. Twenty years ago, she moved to the Rogue Valley from the Drew/Tiller area where her family had homesteaded.

On July 25, 1925, in Roseburg, she married John Elwood Freeman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Freeman was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Medford Congregation.

Mrs. Freeman enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Childress, Medford; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John William Freeman; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Karolina Pearson

Karolina "Linda" Pearson, 75, of Medford, died Saturday (Feb. 6, 1999) at her home. A private service was held. Inurnment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

She was born Karolina Haimerl on April 30, 1923, in Frauenzell, Germany.

On May 30, 1944, in Berlin, Germany, she married William H. Pearson, who died in 1970. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Columbus, Ohio, in 1969.

Mrs. Pearson worked for Bear Creek Corp. for five years, and for White City Bingo for five years.

She lived in Spain before she moved to the U.S., and was a member of the Officer's Wives Club. Following her move to the Rogue Valley, she was a member of the Eagle Women's Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wives Club.

Mrs. Pearson enjoyed crafts, dancing, fishing and playing bingo.

Survivors include her companion, Charles "Mac" McCormick, Medford; a son, Wilhelm "Bill" Burger, Stevensville, Md.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Jack Wayne Thornton

The funeral for Jack Wayne Thornton will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Conger-Morris Medford Chapel.

Mr. Thornton, 64, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 7, 1999) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cascade Christian High School Baseball Fund, 525 East E Street, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

He was born March 7, 1934, in Egeland, N.D. He moved to the Rogue Valley from North Dakota in 1944.

Eighteen years ago, in Medford, he married Martha Joanna Imhausen, who survives.

Mr. Thornton owned and operated Jack's Refrigeration. In his younger years he worked as a Catskinner, and was known as one of the best in the area.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Vickie Meilicke, Medford, Dolly Thornton, White City, and Sherry Schuessler, Williams; four stepdaughters, Jeri Ann Miller, Medford, Sheila Johnson, White City, Judy Fair, Medford, and Teri Williams, Grants Pass; three sisters, Mickey Hagler, Medford, Lois Kezer, Grants Pass, and Dolly Twedell, Orofino, Idaho; three brothers, Ron, Medford, Bob, Jacksonville, and Skip, Declo, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Myrick.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Conger-Morris in Medford.

Gertrude E. Chandler

Gertrude Elma Chandler, 86, of Talent, died Friday (Feb. 5, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Gertrude Morton on Nov. 27, 1912, in Sacramento, Calif.

On July 8, 1946, in Oakland, Calif., she married Robert Chandler, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Tracy, Calif., in the early 1980s.

Mrs. Chandler drove a taxi during World War II. She also sold Avon products.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Survivors include a son, Jack Albert Rockley, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Grandville Leffel, Hemet, Calif.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Gilman.
