Brian James Caskey

Brian James Caskey, 27, of Trail, died Saturday (Dec. 19, 1998) at his home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lambda Community Center, 56 Third St., Ashland, OR 97520, or OnTrack, 221 W. Main, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born on April 14, 1971, in Santa Clara, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley from California in 1995.

Mr. Caskey was a manager for Round Table Pizza.

He also worked as a bat boy for the Oakland A's baseball team, and was a bat boy for the A's in the 1989 World Series.

Survivors include his mother, Nora Wolski, Trail; his father, Gary Caskey, San Jose, Calif; and his grandfather, Rex Caskey, in Georgia.

Duane K. Toland

Duane K. Toland, 75, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 19, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born on March 21, 1923, in Diagonal, Iowa.

On Dec. 17, 1950, in Oakland, Calif., he married Greta Jane Bolesworth, who survives.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975.

Mr. Toland was a dental technician.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 178 in Medford and the First Presbyterian Church in Central Point.

He enjoyed working in his shop and making furniture.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Susan Oliver, San Jose, Calif.; a son, Stephen Gilbert, Whittier, Calif.; a sister, Maurine Lee, Des Moines, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Gamble.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Irvin D. Ross

The funeral for Irvin D. Ross, formerly of Elk Creek, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, Sweet Home. Interment will follow in the Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Mr. Ross, 88, of Sweet Home, died Monday (Dec. 21, 1998) at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Nov. 15, 1910, in Poe Valley.

On Jan. 1, 1931, in Klamath Falls, he married Gertrude Wilson, who died in 1980. He farmed and ranched in Poe Valley until moving to Elk Creek in 1956. He moved to Sweet Home in 1973.

On Feb. 15, 1986, in Reno, Nev., he married Viola Webber, who died in 1995.

Mr. Ross was a rancher and stockman.

He was a member of the Squarenaders.

Mr. Ross enjoyed working with horses and cows.

Survivors include three daughters, Joy Whipple, Salem, Phyllis Moe, Sweet Home, and Jaquline Yorton, Burns; two sons, Frank and Jerry, both Sweet Home; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Nichols in 1998.

L.E. `Mac' McMurray

L.E. "Mac" McMurray, 90, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 18, 1998) at his home. The funeral was held Monday (Dec. 21, 1998). Interment was in the Jacksonville Pioneer Cemetery. Officers and members of Medford Masonic Lodge No. 103 officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 7, 1908, in Cripple Creek, Colo. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1943.

On June 24, 1944, in Medford, he married Edith "Jo" Brown, who died in 1995.

Mr. McMurray was a lumber grader for Elder Mill on the Tiller Trail Highway. He also worked in Southern Oregon and Northern California as a lumber grader.

He was a custodian for Medford School District 549C, retiring in the early 1970s.

Mr. McMurray was a member of the Medford Masonic Lodge No. 103, Blue Lodge, and Scottish Rite.

He belonged to the "Mended Hearts" Club of the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Mr. McMurray enjoyed hunting, fishing, making wine and playing chess. He was especially interested in Indian lore.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl in 1950.

Larence Freisinger

The memorial Mass for Larence "Larry" Philip Freisinger will be at noon today at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Tenth and Oakdale streets, Medford. The Rev. Liam Cary will officiate.

Mr. Freisinger, 55, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 19, 1998) at his home.

He was born on May 15, 1943, in Portland.

On Sept. 3, 1977, in Reno, Nev., he married Sharon Frank, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Portland 23 years ago.

Mr. Freisinger, an accountant, owned and operated Advanced Accounting.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1965 to 1971.

Mr. Freisinger enjoyed woodworking, fishing and the outdoors.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Chris, Beaverton; a stepdaughter, Denise McLean, Medford; a stepson, Dan Bacon, Troutdale; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ida Freisinger.

Roma Jo Elwood

Roma Jo Elwood, 71, of Medford, died Dec. 14, 1998, at her home. A private service is planned.

She was born Roma Jo Shaffer on April 24, 1927, in Medford, a daughter of Joseph and Mamie Lathrop Shaffer.

On May 9, 1959, in Ashland, she married Gordon L. Elwood, who survives. She lived in the Rogue Valley all of her life.

Mrs. Elwood was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She enjoyed reading the Bible.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Karl, Medford; a daughter, Kristy Jo Schultz, Medford; a sister, Evelyn Smith, Applegate; and two grandchildren.

Walter `Bud' Hopson Jr.

Walter Gray "Bud" Hopson Jr., 86, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (Dec. 16, 1998) at Three Rivers Community Hospital & Health Center. A private service is planned.

He was born on April 1, 1912, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

On April 10, 1938, in California, he married Edna Myrth Graham, who died in 1995.

Mr. Hopson was an accountant and office manager until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he moved to Grants Pass from Yuma, Ariz.

He was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church, where he was instrumental in starting the men's Bible study group.

Mr. Hopson enjoyed church activities; reading; solving and creating word puzzles; and his red Buick.

Survivors include a son, Walter G. (Bud) Hopson III, Grants Pass; a daughter, Virginia Lynn Hiber, Pleasant Ridge, Mich.; two brothers, Bill, San Dimas, Calif., and Jerome, Stratton, Maine; two sisters, Barbara Feller, Grants Pass, and Georgia Christley, Kerrville, Texas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lila Boehme.

Arrangements: Neptune Society of Southern Oregon.

Dorothy E. Poovey

The memorial service for Dorothy Elizabeth Poovey will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. The Rev. Everett Denniston of the Merlin Community Baptist Church will officiate. Private interment will be at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Poovey, 71, of White City, died Sunday (Dec. 20, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Dorothy Elizabeth Johnson on Dec. 5, 1927, in Riverton, Wyo. She moved to Grants Pass from Seneca in 1961. In March of this year, she moved to White City.

Mrs. Poovey enjoyed sewing, crocheting and camping.

Survivors include her companion, Donald Clare, White City; a son, Terry Poovey, White City; three daughters, Betty Kruse and Billie Russell, both of Grants Pass, and Irene Lisac, Oregon City; two brothers, Dean Hereford, Brigham City, Utah, and Joe Hereford, Green Springs, Wyo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Poovey, in 1982.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.
