Dorothy K. Barnes

The memorial service for Dorothy K. Barnes will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Memory Gardens Chapel, Medford.

Mrs. Barnes, 95, formerly of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) in Canby, Calif., where she was living.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Dorothy K. Hatch on Nov. 7, 1902, in Dodge City, Kan.

Mrs. Hatch enjoyed telling stories about growing up in the Old West. She had known the Charles Lindbergh family and at one time a "nice family" living down the street turned out to be Ma Barker and her boys.

On March 26, 1927, in Dodge City, she married Milo Glen Barnes, who died in 1984. After the birth of their daughter they moved to Medford in 1941.

Mrs. Hatch was a silk finisher for more than 20 years with Dumas Dry Cleaning. She retired to a life of fishing and repairing wayward dolls she picked up at yard sales.

In 1987, she moved to Porterville, Calif., to be with her daughter. They moved to Modoc County, Calif., in 1991, where Mrs. Barnes made her home in Canby.

Survivors include a daughter, Jerre Carter, Alturas, Calif., a sister, Teene Taylor, Medford; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Marvin Earl Magruder

Marvin Earl Magruder, 89, of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Wayne County, Mo.

Mr. Magruder graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, Calif.

In 1930, in Long Beach, he married Marcella Emily Resnick, who preceded him in death.

After working several years with Union Oil Co., he joined the Long Beach Police Department in 1938. He moved to Ashland in 1947, where he worked in the timber industry and as a bartender.

In 1953, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area and worked for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department. He returned to Medford in 1978.

Mr. Magruder was a member of the Elks and Masonic lodges.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Malcolm, Central Point, Eugene Leroy, Oregon City, and Radford Earl, Mount Vernon, Wash.; a daughter, Johanna Lynn Ebersole, Shady Cove; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Violet Ann `Dolly' O'Neil

The memorial service for Violet Ann "Dolly" O'Neil will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Memory Gardens Chapel, Medford.

Mrs. O'Neil, 57, of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Violet Roemer on Sept. 11, 1940, in Michigan.

In 1979, she moved to the Rogue Valley from Glendale, Calif.

She worked for U.S. Postal Service in Medford for 13 years.

She served in the U.S. Air Force.

A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, she also enjoyed shopping and baking.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Jones, Medford; a son, Patrick, Waldport; a brother, Doug Roemer, Cameron, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Jean Loree Taylor

The graveside service for Jean Loree Taylor will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford. Dave Inglis, religious science practitioner, will officiate.

Jean was stillborn Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Survivors include her parents, Benjamin and Leah Taylor, Medford; three brothers, Jerome, Medford, Lynn, Ashland, and Ben, Roseburg; grandparents, Donna Thacker, Cliff Huffman and Harry Taylor; and step-grandparents, Dave Thacker, Retha Huffman and Winnie Taylor.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Carl Benward

Carl Benward, 74, of Talent, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) at his home. Private inurnment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

He was born Feb. 15, 1924, in St. Ignatius, Mont.

On May 5, 1944, in Seattle, he married Wanda Duncan, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Washington.

Mr. Benward was an electrical superintendent with the Foster Wheeler Corp. of Texas for 42 years. He retired in 1986.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Benward was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union and Army MARS, a military amateur radio club. He enjoyed boating, fishing and painting.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Sandra Brown, Talent; and a son, Carl Jr., Lacey, Wash.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Hilma N. Connor

The funeral for Hilma Connor will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford. Pastor John Bigham of the Reedsport Christian Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mrs. Connor, 86, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 1998) in Reedsport.

She was born Hilma Nahss on July 7, 1912, in Michigan.

In 1941, in Medford, she married Ira O. Connor, who preceded her in death.

She lived in Medford most of her life, moving to Reedsport in 1992 when she became ill.

Mrs. Connor was a nurse's aide until her retirement and then became a hospital volunteer.

She was a 4-H leader for crocheting, knitting and sewing, and was active in her church.

Survivors include a son, Ira Thomas Connor, Reedsport; a sister, Emily Cherry, Seattle; a grandson; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Kittey Markle

Kittey Markle, 71, of Rogue River, died Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at Hearthstone. No service is planned. Private inurnment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Kittey Tackett on Sept. 9, 1926, in West Falls in Malheur County.

On March 17, 1965, in Reno, she married Doc Orrin Markle, who died in 1989.

Mrs. Markle moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, ceramics and raising exotic birds.

Survivors include two sons, Harold J. Enz, Vancouver, Wash., and Larry J. Enz; two sisters, Shirley Thigpen, Medford, and Myrtle Laddusire, Bieber, Calif.; two brothers, William Tackett, McMinnville, and Melvin Wilson, Brentwood, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A brother, Virgel Tackett, died in 1925.

Diana Susan Thomas

Diana Susan Thomas, 43, formerly of Medford, died July 29, 1998, from a blood clot in the heart at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. Her home was in Lacey, Wash.

A memorial service was held Aug. 4 at the Church of Christ in Olympia. Pastor C.J. Moffett officiated.

She was born Nov. 16, 1954, in Medford.

Ms. Thomas graduated from Phoenix High School in 1974 and received an associate of science degree from Grants Pass Community College in 1976.

She was head teacher at Perry Street Daycare in Olympia. In Medford, she operated a day-care center in her home.

Ms. Thomas moved to Lacey 10 years ago from Medford.

She enjoyed her dog, Princess.

Survivors include her parents, LaVonne and Rose Thomas, Olympia; four sisters, Judith Looper, Talent, Debra Gairson, Phoenix, Doris Marvin, Arleta, Calif., and Patty Smulders, Honolulu, Hawaii; and a brother, Dan Thomas, Tumwater, Wash.

Arrangements: Woodlawn Funeral Home, Lacey.

Pansy D. Davis

The graveside service for Pansy D. Davis will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Davis, 102, formerly of Phoenix, died Tuesday (Aug. 11, 1998) in Crescent City, Calif., where she was living.

She was born Pansy Davis on Nov. 10, 1895, in Harriman, Tenn. She moved to the Rogue Valley around 1918 from Tennessee.

In June 1920, she married Bert N. Davis of Medford. He preceded her in death in 1951.

Mrs. Davis lived in Phoenix until 1971, when she moved to Crescent City with her son.

She was an avid quilt maker and her creations are scattered throughout the Rogue Valley and Crescent City areas.

Survivors include a son, Gene F., Crescent City; two daughters, Ruth Gilman, Sacramento, Calif., and Jane Fox, Knoxville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.
