Howard Washburn Jr.

The graveside service for Howard Allen Washburn Jr. will be at 1 p.m. today in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Henry Zollbrecht of Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate.

Mr. Washburn, 78, of Central Point, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association, 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Suite 2200, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born Nov. 18, 1919, in Chicago, Ill.

Mr. Washburn retired from Railway Express in Los Angeles 25 years ago. He then moved to the Rogue Valley from Van Nuys, Calif.

He also was a salesman for the Fuller Brush Co. and Watkins Products.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Washburn was a member of the Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed organ music, traveling, antiques and pies.

Survivors include two daughters, Jannine Washburn, Medford, and Linnea Reese, Burbank, Calif.; a sister, Beverly Radell, Las Vegas; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard III, in 1980; a brother; and two sisters.

Mildred Iles Clark

The graveside service for Mildred Iles Clark will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. The Rev. Alan Jackson of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Mrs. Clark, 93, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mildred Clark Memorial Fund, 2000 Oakwood Drive, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Mildred Iles on Feb. 23, 1905, in Springfield, Ill.

On Dec. 31, 1924, in Springfield, she married Charles B. Clark, who died in 1996. They moved to the Rogue Valley 11 years ago from West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Clark was a secretary for the Palm Beach county assessor's office and sheriff's office.

She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford and White Shrine and Eastern Star in Springfield, Ill.

Mrs. Clark had a private pilot's license and also enjoyed bridge and painting.

Survivors include a sister, Jessie Scafani, Medford. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Malcolm, Roger, Morris and William Iles.

Taylor James Burgess

The graveside service for Taylor James Burgess will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Jim Larson will officiate.

Mr. Burgess, 20, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Medford Ski Education Foundation Inc., Scholarship Fund, Bank of Southern Oregon, 1455 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 7, 1978, in Ashland, and lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.

Mr. Burgess attended Montana State University for one year and was a junior at Oregon State University.

He was an avid skier, hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his mother, Cynthia Burgess, Medford; his father, Brian Burgess, Medford; his stepmother, Jean Hall, Medford; a brother, Neil, Medford; a stepsister, Alexandra Hall, Medford; and grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Smith, Burlingame, Calif., and Elmer and Ruby Burgess, Sonora, Calif.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Donald `Blackie' Bobbett

Donald "Blackie" Bobbett, 56, of Central Point, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Dec. 10, 1941, in Medford, a son of Cecil and Marie Bobbett.

Mr. Bobbett was manager of Medford Battery, a family business, for many years.

He enjoyed gold mining and motorcycle riding.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Ann Meier, Old Town, Idaho, and Debra Spencer, Priest River, Idaho; a son, Robert, Priest River; three brothers, John, Medford, James, Casa Grande, Ariz., and Bob, Spokane, Wash.; four sisters, Cecilia Wood, Medford, Helen Betz, Talent, Betty Read, Central Point, and Ethel Madden, Brookings; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Dorsey Barner Gruver

Dorsey Barner Gruver, 88, of Ashland, died Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service was held.

He was born Oct. 31, 1909, in Du Bois, Pa.

On Feb. 6, 1932, in New Kensington, Pa., he married Melva Bailey, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 21 years ago from Northridge, Calif.

Mr. Gruver was an aerospace design engineer for 42 years in California, working for Rocketdyne, North American Aviation and Hughes Aircraft. He retired in 1975.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Mr. Gruver was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed aviation and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Martha Satterthwaite, Seattle, Beth Peters, Phoenix, Ariz., and Nina Brunetti, Castro Valley, Calif.; a son, Dorsey Jr., El Paso, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Susan Hurley Barker

The memorial service for Susan Hurley Barker will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford. The Rev. John Braund of the Medford First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mrs. Barker, 84, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504 or the Nature Conservancy, 1815 N. Lynn St., Arlington, VA 22209.

She was born Susan Hurley on Dec. 11, 1913, in Hoquiam, Wash. In 1924, the family moved to Eugene where her father practiced medicine for many years.

Mrs. Barker graduated from the University of Oregon, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

On Sept. 17, 1936, in Eugene, she married William Barker, who died in 1994. They moved to Medford in 1936, where he operated Barker's Men's Clothing Store for many years.

In her earlier years Mrs. Barker was active in the Rogue Valley Medical Center Auxiliary and the American Red Cross.

Survivors include three daughters, Jane Genshlea Shurtz, Woodland, Calif., Molly Wolff, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Ann Kirkpatrick, Corrales, N.M.; a son, Tom, Edmonds, Wash.; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William Hurley Barker in 1942.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Mildred Fleet

The graveside service for Mildred "Milly" Bevis Fleet will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Fleet, 83, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 10, 1998) at Rose Villa, a Portland retirement center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rose Villa Foundation, 13305 S.E. River Road, Portland, OR 97222.

She was born Mildred Peck on Feb. 1, 1915, in Arapaho, Okla. Three years later, the family moved to Buhl, Idaho, where she grew up with a large extended family.

Mrs. Fleet attended the University of Idaho in Pocatello.

In 1939, while teaching in Ketchum, Idaho, she met and married Vincent "Vinnie" Bevis. The family moved to Medford in 1947.

She was busy at home raising two daughters and a son until the death of Mr. Bevis, former principal of Hedrick Junior High School, in 1959. She then finished her education at Southern Oregon College and returned to teaching in the Medford School District.

At retirement, she was a resource specialist at Jackson Elementary School.

After retiring, she was a Laubach instructor and trainer, teaching English as a second language.

In 1973, in Portland, she married Gilbert Fleet, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Fleet moved to Portland in 1993 from Medford.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne, Portland, and Kathy, Bangor, Maine; a son, John, Anchorage, Alaska; three stepdaughters, Leslie, Portland, Lauralee, Boise, Idaho, and Marilyn, Santa Maria, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Peake Memorial Chapel, Portland.

Frederick R. Morey

Frederick R. Morey, 79, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 4, 1998) in Springfield, where he was living. The memorial service was held Aug. 10 in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Boise, Idaho.

Mr. Morey was a cattle rancher and a foreman for Associated Fruit in Medford.

During World War II, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army 743rd Tank Battalion. He was awarded the Silver Star, a Purple Heart and two oak leaf clusters.

He moved to Springfield in March 1997 from Medford.

Mr. Morey enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include five daughters, Pearl Kolodejchuk, Jacksonville, Kathleen Morey, Medford, Juliann Forman, Portland, Eva Dixon, Springfield, and Lavina Smith, Davis, Calif.; three brothers, Curt, Grants Pass, Noel, Soquel, Calif., and Lyle, Redding, Calif.; a sister, Clara Branch, Wofford Heights, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leora E. Morey; and a son, Noel Roger.

Arrangements: Musgrove Family Mortuary, Eugene.
