Chris T. Horton

The memorial service of Chris T. Horton will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Church, Medford. Pastor Stan Williams will officiate.

Chris, 15, of Talent, died in a drowning accident on Friday (July 17, 1998) in Florence.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Cornerstone Church, 608 N. Bartlett St. Medford, OR 97501.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1982 in Ashland to Bill and Sheila Horton. He attended first grade at Talent Elementary School, then was home schooled through the seventh grade. He attended eighth grade at Talent Middle School, where he was on the honor roll and was a member of the school band. He attended Phoenix High School his freshman year and was a percussionist in the band.

He was a member of the Cornerstone Church and participated in the Cornerstone Youth Group.

He was a member of Cub Scouts, attaining Arrow of Light. He continued into Boy Scouts achieving the rank of Star. He was a past patrol leader and read the level of brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow.

He enjoyed skiing, fencing, swimming and was passionate about reading.

Survivors in addition to his parents include a sister, Elizabeth Horton; a brother, Dan Horton, all of Talent; his grandparents, Rachel Horton, Royal Oaks, Mich.; and Gordon and Marian Coles, Manteca, Calif.

Eugene L. Garner

Eugene L. Garner, who in 1962 spearheaded the organizational effort for the mass innoculation against polio in Southern Oregon, died Wednesday (July 15, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

The memorial service for Mr. Garner, 76, of Medford, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Siskiyou Chapel.

In 1962, following the discovery of the Sabin vaccine for polio, clinics were held throughout the county from May through September, in which 127,300 people were inoculated.

Mr. Garner served as chairman of the March of Dimes campaign and was a founding member of the Friends of Prescott Park.

For 30 years, he was in real estate.

He served on the Jackson County Board of Equalization, enjoyed racing pigeons and was a member of the Medford Racing Pigeon Club.

A member of the Medford Rifle and Pistol Club, he won awards in target rifle competition.

During World War II, he was an aviation metalsmith third class in the U.S. Navy.

He was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Watertown, S.D.

In May 1955, he married Helen C. Libbey, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1957 from Santa Monica, Calif.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Debbie Garner, Medford, Janet Garner, Skykomish, Wash., and Carol Grieninger, Yreka, Calif.; a son, Robert Libby; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Dr. Ralph Odell

Dr. Ralph Odell, 80, of Medford, surgeon, physician and golfer, died June 26, 1998, at Rogue Valley Medical Center from complications of a brain tumor. A private service was held July 6 in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. His son, Brian Odell, officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Country Club Youth Program, 2660 Hillcrest Road, Medford, OR 97504.

Dr. Odell started his medical practice as a general practitioner in Medford in the late 1940s. He returned in 1958 as a surgeon, practicing here until 1970. He joined the Albert Newton Medical Clinic in Yreka, Calif., as a partner, remaining there until 1979. He also maintained an office in Tulelake, Calif.

Dr. Odell's medical service included being a medical officer in the National Guard, flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force, and staff surgeon at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Roseburg, Vancouver, Wash., and Biloxi, Miss. He retired in 1983.

Known in golfing circles throughout the Northwest, Dr. Odell represented the Rogue Valley Country Club as a member of the Oregon and Southern Oregon senior golfers associations. For many years he played in the Senior Masters Golf Association championship tournament in Palm Desert, Calif., as well as Northwest golf tournaments. He was a member of the U.S. Golf Association.

He had a large library of books on golf.

Dr. Odell was born April 15, 1918, in Chicago, and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, living with relatives.

He graduated from Lane Technical High School in Chicago.

On Sept. 14, 1940, in Evanston, Ill., he married Lucille Jacobson, who survives.

Dr. Odell was a graduate of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Oregon Medical School. His internship was at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago. While in medical school he was in the Army specialized training program.

He also attended the School of Aviation Medicine in Texas, later becoming flight surgeon at Air University Command Branch, Gunter AFB, Montgomery, Ala., with the rank of captain.

He took his surgery residency at Kennedy Medical Teaching Group, Veterans Hospital.

He was a volunteer senior clinical instructor in surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School for 12 years.

Dr. Odell was a member of the American and Oregon medical associations, Jackson and Siskiyou county medical societies, American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and Pan Pacific Society.

He was a staff member of hospitals in Medford, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, and Redding, Calif., and was a consultant at the VA Domiciliary in White City.

A pilot, Dr. Odell is believed to be the oldest individual to pass his instrument flying exams.

He was a life member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Brian Odell, Medford; two daughters, Courtenay Bacchetti, Grants Pass, and Marilyn Wilson, Medford; a brother, Roy K., Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Irene G. Spraker

Irene G. Spraker, 87, of Grants Pass, died Friday (July 17, 1998) at Three Rivers Community Hospital. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Siskiyou Audubon Society, P.O. Box 1047, Grants Pass, OR 97528.

She was born Nov. 13, 1910, in Wanaka, Okla.

In 1934, she married John Leonard Spraker, who died April 9, 1952.

Prior to moving to Phoenix in 1994, she lived in Hemet and Banning, Calif. She moved to Grants Pass this year.

Mrs. Spraker was a member of the Grange, Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbors and the Moose Lodge in Beaumont, Calif.

An avid reader, she also enjoyed walking, collecting rocks, and flower gardening.

Survivors include four daughters, Veronica Markey, Medford, Lorene Munro, O'Brien, Jackie Spraker, Lebanon, Mo., and J. Summer Rogers, Crescent City, Calif.; two sisters, Bessie Wright, Redlands, Calif., and Yuma Stevens, LaGrande; two brothers, Gene Rogers, Apple Valley, Calif., and Jerry Rogers, Chino, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bonnie, Vera, Emily and Blossom; and two brothers, Dale and Bill.

Rose H. Maris

The funeral for Rose H. Maris, who once played professional women's baseball with the Hollywood Stars, will be at 9 a.m., July 20 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. at Lawncrest Cemetery, Redding, Calif.

Mrs. Maris, 91, died July 1, 1998, at her home in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Loaves and Fishes program, in care of the Ashland Senior Center, 1699 Homes Ave., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Nov. 21, 1906, in Ashland, the daughter of JoHanna and George Hake. She was raised in Ashland and lived in several towns in California, including Redding, for 32 years. She returned to the Rogue Valley in 1978.

She married Charlie Maris, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Maris owned and operated several coffee shops and worked as a Realtor.

She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star in Glendale, Calif., and volunteered with the Loaves and Fishes program.

A brother and three sisters preceded her in death.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

William S. Poteet

The funeral for William S. Poteet will be 2 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Chapel.

Pastor Ron Ashpole will officiate. A graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Poteet, 69, of Medford, died Thursday (July 16, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Edmonson County, Ky.

On Aug. 1, 1959, in Tennessee, he married Betty F. French, who survives.

Mr. Poteet was retired from Pacific Telephone Co.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Deborah Wetterstrom, Wanda Poteet and Wendy Schoonmaker; two sons, Bob Poteet and Clint Poteet; two brothers, Clyde and Bob; four sisters, Ruth Mattingly, Inez Reece, Anna Lichte and Pat Poynter; and 10 grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m today and 12 to 2 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens.

Don I. Evans

Don I. Evans, 71, of Medford, died Thursday (July 16, 1998) at Hearthstone. A private graveside service is planned. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Evans was born on Sept. 14, 1926, in McCool, Neb.

The family moved to Oregon in 1931.

On Nov. 14, 1951, in Reno, Nev., he married Barbara Pappas, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and with the Army of Occupation in Japan.

He was a general manager of several movie theaters including Medford 4 Cinemas, Holly, Craterian, Cinema Center and Starlite Drive-in.

He enjoyed camping and motorcycle riding.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Brad, Medford; a daughter, Brenda Anderson, Medford; a sister, Ila Smith, Talent; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
