Bert J. Pierce

Albert "Bert" Jesse Pierce, 83, of White City, died Thursday (March 5, 1998) at his home. A private graveside service was held in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

He was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Sioux City, Iowa.

On June 26, 1945, in San Bernadino, Calif., he married Inice Inman, who survives.

During World War II, Mr. Pierce served with the 8th Air Force, 91st Division, 401st Squadron in Bassingborn, England, in charge of B-17 maintenance.

For inventing a tool that eased the work on the engines, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritious service. The tool is still in use.

His war efforts are mentioned in John Steinbeck's "Once There Was a War." A master sergeant, Mr. Pierce once taxied Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's plane during maintenance.

Mr. Pierce also was the crew chief during the filming of the movie "Memphis Bell."

Mr. Pierce was foreman of the Modoc Orchard at Table Rock until joining the Jackson County Roads Department in 1964. He retired in 1975.

He enjoyed working in his garden.

Survivors include two daughters, Lorieta Pierce, White City, and Anita Wolfe, Central Point; three sisters, Esther Alam Fremont, Calif., Anna Marsh, Mason City, Iowa, and Lois Brown, Harrison, Ark.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. Three brothers, Edward F., Paul F., and Talbot A. Pierce, preceded him in death.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Ida May Webster

Ida May Webster, 79, of Medford, died Friday (Feb. 27, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service has been held. Interment was in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

She was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Tacoma, Wash.

In September 1939 in Tacoma, she married Alvin Swift, who died in 1940.

On May 28, 1949, in Los Angeles, she married Clifton P. Webster, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 from Cerritos, Calif.

Mrs. Webster attended business college and was secretary to the vice president of Richfield Oil Co. in Los Angeles for several years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lakewood, Calif., where she taught Child Evangelism, Sunday school and was the Bible study fellowship leader. She was a member of the Bible Memory Association.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Ruth Wilson, Central Point, and Sharon Livingston, Hesperia, Calif.; a son, Tim, Hesperia, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services.

Rose M. McGarvey

The funeral for Rose M. McGarvey will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Blessing, Iowa. The Rev. Lloyd Reuter will officiate. Interment will be in the church's cemetery.

Mrs. McGarvey, 89, of Central Point, died Thursday (March 5, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 449 S. Ivy St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Rose Dufek on June 2, 1908, in Vesta, Minn.

On Feb. 11, 1931, in Blessing, she married Leo James McGarvey, who died Jan. 17, 1970. She moved to Indiana in 1974 and to the Rogue Valley in 1996.

Mrs. McGarvey grew up in Iowa and attended schools there.

A skilled knitter, she made more than 300 Christmas stockings, and numerous afghans, bedspreads, and tablecloths. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlys McGarvey Ketchum, Central Point; a son, Richard, Bloomington, Indiana; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Joseph Dufek, preceded her in death.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services.

Max DeFrance

The funeral for Max DeFrance will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Perl Funeral Service-Siskiyou Chapel. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. DeFrance, 63, of Medford, died Friday (March 6, 1998) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born June 6, 1934, in Detroit, Mich. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1961 from Oceanside, Calif.

Mr. DeFrance, who worked at Cascade Wood Products, joined the firm in 1962.

On Oct. 12, 1974, in Phoenix, he married Dorothy Ward, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, being discharged as a staff sergeant.

He enjoyed woodworking, restoring cars, and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Tony and Jack, both Medford; five daughters, Paula Guenther and Leora DeFrance, both Medford, Paige Jenson, Ashland, Jennifer Kiefer, Denver, and Shelley Hiese, Fremont, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Roberson and Butchie Kransiski, both in Michigan; a brother, Ray, Plymouth, Mich.; and 15 grandchildren. A sister, Georgette Billingsley, preceded him in death.

Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel.

Phyllis Claire Drake

Phyllis Claire Drake, 83, of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at her home. No service is planned. Private entombment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Flights, 914 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Phyllis Tibbits on Aug. 25, 1914, in Rochester, N.Y.

Mrs. Drake moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from Long Beach, Calif.

On Jan. 21, 1971, in Reno, Nev., she married Clarence E. Drake, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Drake was an Avon representative for 30 years in the Shady Cove area.

She was a member of the Upper Rogue United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Mazama Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and for eight years was master of the Shady Cove Grange.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Herman, Glendale, Calif.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Leo Goldie Sullivant

Leo Goldie Sullivant, 87, of Eagle Point, died Thursday (March 5, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A memorial service will be held later.

She was born Leo Goldie Owings on Nov. 22, 1910, in Hartville, Mo.

Mrs. Sullivant moved to the Rogue Valley 25 years ago.

Survivors include two sons, 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sullivant.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Birdie Swearingen

Birdie Swearingen, 92, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) in Springfield. Her home was in Springfield.

She was born Birdie Gulliford on Feb. 12, 1906, in Prineville.

Mrs. Swearingen lived in Medford for 15 years before moving to Springfield 25 years ago.

She was married to Virgil "Dutch" Coggins, who died in Medford in 1938. Later she married Buz Swearingen, who preceded her in death.

A custom tailor for 50 years, she worked for several years at Barker's Men's Store in Medford and at Klopfensteins Inc. and Gay Blade Clothes for Men in Eugene.

Mrs. Swearingen, an avid horsewoman, belonged to serveral horse clubs. She also enjoyed her poodles and traveling worldwide with her sister.

There are no known survivors. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Arrangements: Buell Chapel, Springfield.

Kolena Nicole Bunce

Kolena Nicole Bunce, 22, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Jan. 21, 1976, in Boise, Idaho.

Ms. Bunce moved to the Rogue Valley seven years ago from Garden Valley, Idaho.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping and traveling.

Survivors include her companion, Everett Reedy, Medford; a son, Ravine Reedy, Medford; her parents, Roy and Cathy Bunce, Medford; three sisters, Kristina Randall, Yreka, Calif., Patricia Mullins, Orofino, Idaho, and Trenda Bunce, Boise; and grandparents, Omer and Nadine Richardson, Port Townsend, Wash., and Jess and Emma Biggers, Lewiston, Idaho. She was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Diane Michael DeLuca

The funeral for Diane D. Michael De Luca will be at 9 a.m. today at the family home, 85 Wimer St., Ashland. Interment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Ms. DeLuca, 54, of Ashland, died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at her home.

She was born April 30, 1943, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

She graduated from Phoenix High School in 1961 and attended what is now Southern Oregon University in 1962.

On Feb. 21, 1998, in Ashland, she married Michael L. Miller, who survives.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Jeffrey DeBoer, Bryan DeBoer, and Mark DeBoer, all Medford; her mother, Anne DeLuca, Medford; a sister, Patty Davison, Jacksonville; a brother, Ron DeLuca, Ashland; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Lewis DeLuca.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
