Frances Ellen Robertson
January 28, 1916 - August 21, 2007

Frances Ellen Robertson, age 91, of Sweet Home, died Tuesday. She was born to Byron and Nellie (Scheiler) Hutchins in Jefferson, Oregon. She married Earl Robertson on July 30, 1937 in Stevens, Washington. They then moved to Sweet Home in 1941.

She lived in and around Sweet Home most of her life. Frances worked for Robertson Feed and Seed for several years. She loved to fish, hunt, and travel.

Frances is survived by a son, Leroy Robertson, and his wife, Jewell, of Sweet Home; a daughter, Lois Kerns, and her husband, Arthur, of Eugene; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Robertson; a sister, A. Marie Robertson; and two brothers, Raymond and Paul Hutchins.

Viewing will take place Thursday, August 23, from 2:00-7:00 pm. A graveside service at Gilliland Cemetery will be held Friday, August 24, at 10:00 am. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Kenneth Morton Johnston
February 7, 1913 - August 22, 2007

Kenneth Morton Johnston, age 94, of Sweet Home, passed away August 22, 2007. He was born in Greenville, Kentucky to Irvin Morton and Lela Ruth (Cornette) Johnston.

Kenneth moved to Bakersfield, California in 1932 from Greenville, Kentucky. He found work as landscaper, eventually becoming a Landscape Architect Engineer. He moved to Oregon in 1939. He attended NW Christian College, and later finished schooling at Butler University in Indiana.

Kenneth served in many ministries, including Kern Park Christian Church in Portland, Oregon. He served in various colleges (NW Christian College, Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee, and Puget Sound Christian College in Edmonds, Washington) and served as a Field Representative with Oregon Christian Convention. Kenneth served in many different pastorals: Dallas, Oregon, Sheridan, and Indiana.

He served as Minister at Sweet Home Church of Christ at 18th and Long. He continued to serve in the congregation as an Elder until his passing.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Gail Dell, of Turner, Oregon; one sister, Anna Lee Warren, of Greenville, Kentucky; and his nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Christy (Mario) Bernal, of Lakeview, Oregon, Jason (Tina) Cawthorn, of Clackamas, Oregon, and Mark Cawthorn of Gresham, Oregon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Perry; son, Wayne Johnston; and brother, William “Bill” Johnson.

Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, August 29th, at 18th and Long Church of Christ. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Mary Louise Bauman-Mirhady
July 16, 2007

Mary Louise Bauman-Mirhady passed away in Newport Beach, California on July 16, 2007 after several years of declining health.

Mary was born in Stayton, Oregon and was the daughter of Henry and Lera Snoddy. Four sisters and two brothers predeceased her.

Mary was married for 25 years to William Bauman, an Oregon lumberman, entrepreneur and philanthropist. They made their home in Lebanon, where they raised their family.

For the last 17 years Mary lived in both Portland, Oregon and Corona Del Mar, California. From 1990 she served as Chairman of The William H. and Mary L. Bauman Foundation. Here she provided leadership in supporting social and health agencies, the arts, educational institutions and faith based organizations.

Mary had a keen interest in contributing to organizations benefiting women and children. She provided assistance to the Dougy Center, Trillium Family Services, Boys and Girls Aid Society, The Salvation Army West Women's Shelter, Doernbecher Children's Hospital's Childhood Diabetes program and OHSU-Casey Eye Clinic for autoimmune disease.

As a patron of the arts, Mary supported The Oregon Ballet, The Portland Art Museum, The Portland Opera, The Oregon Symphony and The Oregon Historical Society. Mary encouraged educational institutions like George Fox University, George Fox Evangelical Seminary and Lewis and Clark College with her interest and funding. A long time member of the Pacific Conference of The Evangelical Church, Mary was influential in providing major donor support for various conference programs in education, church extension, coaching, clergy assessment and natural church development.

Mary's 77 years were filled with wonderful interests and activities that enriched her life and others. Of her many hobbies, she thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world, playing piano and oil painting. She loved watching the sunsets from her second home in Corona Del Mar with her husband, Farhad.

Mary is survived by her husband of 17 years, Farhad Mirhady, four children, Bruce Schwindt, Paul Schwindt, Gay Schwindt-Salo and Julietta Bauman-Freres, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her family, Mary leaves many friends who have benefited from her passion for life and thoughtful kindness. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Private services will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2007 in Sweet Home, Oregon. A celebration of her life will take place at The Arlington Club in Portland, Oregon on August 8th.

Barbara Ann Brewer
July 3, 1934 - July 20, 2007

Barbara Ann Brewer, age 73, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2007. She was born on July 3, 1934 in Burlington, Iowa to Leslie and Edna (Minard) Edwards.

Barbara worked as a hairdresser, owning her own shops. She retired to Oregon in 2001 to be close to her daughters and grandchildren.

She enjoyed Home decorating, painting, drawing and crotcheting.

Barbara is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Laura and Laird Adkins of Astoria, OR, Robin and Randy Miller of Hasley, Linda and Guy Cuarter of Burns, OR; sons and daughter-in-law James and Angie Brewer of Anchorage, AK: daughter-in-law Mimi Tolva of Homer, AK; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Michael Tolva, brother Edward Edwards, granddaughter Leanne Hill, and grandson Ray Brewer.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Final interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria, OR.

Warren Robert Way
January 4, 1923 - July 23, 2007

Warren Robert Way, age 84, of Sweet Home, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007. He was born January 4, 1923 in San Francisco, CA. Services to be announced in Idaho. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Rose McCuistian
March 4, 1912 - July 30, 2007

Rose "Zelma" Hoskins McCuistian of Sweet Home, Oregon passed away July 30, 2007 at her home at Wiley Creek Community. She was an independent woman who impressed everyone with her determination and kind heart. The staff at Wiley Creek cared for her and loved her deeply. Her family surrounded her with love.

Zelma was born March 4, 1912, at home in Witter, Arkansas. She was the third of five children born to Rachel Florence Bollinger Hoskins and Farris Henry Hoskins.

She attended school through the eighth grade.

She married John Long McCuistian September 30, 1932, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They moved where John could find work. During the next 16 years they lived in Witter, Arkansas, Collinsville, Oklahoma and Gentry, Arkansas.

During World War II the family moved to Claremore, Oklahoma. Zelma worked as a riveter for Douglas Aircraft and was eventually trained as a welder. With her first name of Rose, she was often teased as "The" Rosie the Riveter, a popular icon during World War II.

In 1948, the family moved to Sweet Home, Oregon. Zelma worked as a cook at the Wanigan Cafe, Foster Cafe and Foster School cafeteria. She also spent hours as a devoted grandmother taking care of her grandchildren.

Zelma was known for her immense weed-free vegetable garden. When the vegetables were ready for picking, she then spent hours canning for her family. She also picked blackberries, strawberries and cherries to make cobblers, pies, jams and jellies.

Zelma's hands were always busy. She crocheted slippers, scarves and hats. Her hand-pieced and hand-quilted quilts are prized possessions. Five years ago, she presented each of her grandchildren with one of her quilts. She sewed and mended clothes, could be counted on to replace a button, made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and stuffed animals.

Zelma was preceded in death by her husband John, daughter Vera Gabriel, grandson Ian McCuistian, son-in Law Keith Gabriel, and son-in-law Bob Vinson.

Survivors include sister Lois Hoskins of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter Jo Ella Lutton and son-in-law John Lutton of Lebanon, Oregon; daughter Wanda Vinson of Eugene, Oregon; daughter Johnny Ruth Kyriss and son-in-law Ken Kyriss of Albany, Oregon; son Marion McCuistian and daughter-in-law Rosemary McCuistian of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; son Michael McCuistian of Eugene, Oregon; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long Street, Sweet Home, Oregon, Monday August 6, 1:00 pm. Interment at Gilliland Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Sweet Home Alumni Scholarship Program, PO Box 83, Sweet Home, Oregon 97386. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Loralee Braatz, age 58, of Sweet Home, died on Monday, August 1, 2007. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Catherine Virginia Muir
October 16, 1920 - August 8, 2007

Catherine Virginia Muir, age 86, of Sweet Home, passed away August 8, 2007. She was born in Centralia, Washington to William Francis and Sadie Madeline (Edwards) Brooks. She lived in Portland until 1948 and has lived in Sweet Home ever since.

She was a member of Sweet Home Community Chapel for the past few years. Prior to that, Catherine was a member and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for 40 years at the Bethel Lutheran Church.

Catherine knew and taught classes on Pine Needle Basketry. She oil painted and did crafts. She and her husband, Jim, were avid rock hounds. She loved the beach, camping, picnicking, hunting, and fishing and even bagged five deer on her own. She was an enthusiastic Seattle Mariners fan, right up to the very end. Catherine loved her family and was a friend to all.

Catherine is survived by her children: Donna Rae Nelson of Sweet Home, William David Townsend of Tonopah, Arizona, Laurel Lee Colvin of La Pine; and 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Muir, in 1988, brother, Kenneth Brooks, in 2005, and sister, Madeline Garver-Smith, in 2005.

A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 19th, at Sweet Home Community Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Special Olympics. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
