Dianna L. Youngman
November 19, 1943 - February 1, 2007

Dianna L. Youngman, 63, of Sweet Home died Thursday. She was born in Marion, Virginia. She married Ronald Youngman on February 21, 1976.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald Youngman. Dianna was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Lynn Alexy, in 2003.

A viewing is scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 4, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.

Richard Ireland, Sr.
June 4, 1939 - January 29, 2007

Richard Ireland, Sr., 67, of Lebanon, died Monday. He was born to Jerry and Celeo (Story) Ireland in Seaside, Oregon.

He is survived by children, Renee Godell of Sweet Home, Richard Ireland, Jr., of Lebanon, and Shellie Pruett of Whitehall, Montana; ex-wife, Bettie Aronson of Prineville; brothers, Bill Ireland and Jim Ireland; and sister, Norma Kenny.

Richard was preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother, Fred Dixon.

Service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, February 8th, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Rd., Portland. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Willard Frick
February 7, 1923 - January 14, 2007

Willard Frick, 83, of Sweet Home, died on Sunday morning at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.

Willard was born on February 7, 1923 in Hastings, Nebraska, the son of Jacob and Mary Frick.

Willard entered the United States Navy during WWII, serving four years. He met and later married Vivian Nielsen on April 17, 1952 in Nebraska. The young couple came to Oregon in the 1950’s. Willard worked in lumber mills and later plywood mills after moving to Sweet Home in 1960.

Willard would eventually retire in 1974. He and Vivian became snowbirds, traveling to Yuma, Arizona during the winter. Vivian passed away in 1995, while in Arizona. Willard continued snowbirding for four more years before deciding to stay in Sweet Home.

Willard enjoyed traveling, gardening, and playing cards. He loved to watch baseball. His family remembers him as a woodworker and leather worker. He loved family and his grandchildren.

Willard is survived by two sons: Donald and wife Nancy Frick, and Richard and wife LeRee Frick; one brother: Kenneth Frick; three grandchildren and their spouses; and grandson Brian. He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian; parents; two sisters: Helen and Pauline; and two brothers: Clarence and Harold.

A viewing is scheduled for 9:00-11:00 am Wednesday, January 17, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 pm at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home, Oregon.

Darrell Duane Bates
October 19, 1956 - January 5, 2007

Darrell Duane Bates, 50, of Sweet Home, died January 5th at his home. He was born to Lester and Zelma (Cagle) Bates.

Darrell grew up in Ukiah, California. He came to Oregon in his 20’s, settling in the Rogue River/Grants Pass area. He spent a short time in Tacoma and moved to Sweet Home three years ago.

Darrell painted cars and did body work for Floyd’s Body Shop. He enjoyed time with friends and family and was well loved.

Darrell is survived by sister: Robbie and husband Harland Deathridge of Ripon, CA; two brothers: Earl and wife Rita Bates of Sacramento, CA and Paul and wife Oleta Bates of Ukiah, CA; uncle: Roy Bates; and many friends and cousins.

Due to the weather, the family has decided to change the service for Darrell D. Bates. It will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 20th, at the American Legion Hall, 1127 Long St., Sweet Home. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Leonore M. Schmidt
April 24, 1937 - January 23, 2008

Leonore M. Schmidt, age 70, of Sweet Home, passed away Wednesday. She was born in Berlin, Germany to Kurt and Herta (Buchholz) Wassermann.

She moved to Toronto, Canada in 1959. After four years in Toronto she moved to California, then came to Sweet Home in 1994.

Leonore was a caretaker for the elderly. She loved sewing, dancing and spending quality time with family and friends.

Leonore is survived by her husband, Axel Schmidt, and daughter, Angie Houck, both of Sweet Home; one sister, Brigette Molinari, of Santa Rosa, California; three grandchildren: Jessica, Ronald and Mikaela, all of Sweet Home; and one great grandchild, Aubrie, also of Sweet Home.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Steven H. Christensen
November 19, 1928 - January 25, 2008

Steven Hans Christensen, age 79, of Lebanon died at home Friday, January 25, after a lengthy fight with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Steven was born in Collbran, Colorado, to Hans William and Shirley Hope (Phillips) Christensen. He moved with his family at an early age to Southern California.

At 17 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, he served for two years. He later joined the U.S. Army and served for five years. He was in Germany when the Korean War broke out and they were on 24-hour notice to be ready to head to Korea. Fortunately the call never came.

Steven married Nancy Jean Robken on July 13, 1963. In 1970 they moved with their two children to Albany, Oregon. Steven was an auto mechanic for 50 years, he owned his own shop in Southern California and worked the last 20 years for Nissen Ford in Albany retiring in 1993. His beloved Nancy died in 1992.

Steven married Edna Clark in November 2000 in Utah, where they lived for two years before returning to Oregon, living in Lebanon. He was a multi-talented man: mechanic, metal worker, cabinet builder, furniture refinisher, ham radio operator, voracious reader, gardener, photographer, and always interested in history, especially in doing genealogy. He also enjoyed restoring player pianos and working on computers and was always willing to help others.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; son, John Christensen (Karen), of Meridian, ID; daughter, Catherine Catterson (James), of Albany; five grandchildren: Micheal and Carmen Kelly and Skylar, Crystal, and Ashley Christensen; sisters, Sofia McKay and Virginia Watson; and brother, John Roper. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Viewing will be 4:00-6:00 pm Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lebanon. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday Feb. 2 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Albany. Final burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens on Riverside Drive in Albany. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

James Ruil Holley
May 7, 1916 - January 26, 2008

James Ruil Holley was born in Scotts Hill, Tennessee to parents Jim and Dora (McCall) Holley. Ruil, as he was known to his family and friends, spent his early years in Tennessee and Missouri, before his parents settled in Oklahoma.

In 1937, he met and married Dimple Mae Quinn; a marriage that would last more than 70 years, until his death.

During his early married years, Ruil worked as a farmer before he moved his family to Wright City, Oklahoma, where he began a career working in sawmills.

He served with the Army during the latter stages of World War II.

In 1951, he made his final move with his family to Sweet Home, where he worked in the lumber industry until his retirement.

Ruil enjoyed hunting trips with his family; fishing the local lakes with his brother, Jimmie; and growing one of the best vegetable gardens in the area. He and his wife, Dimple, would can up to 200 quarts of vegetables each year and share them with their kids and their families.

Ruil was preceded in death by sisters Vera, Nina Jane, Polly, Inez, and Melba; brothers Bill, Alton and Jimmie; and son Billy in 2007.

He is survived by wife of 70 years, Dimple; brother Jack of Dallas, Texas; sons David and Tom, of Sweet Home; daughters Betty of Aloha and Shirley of Springfield; daughter-in-law Carolyn Holley of Rogue River; many grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Gilliland Cemetery.
