Donald J. "Don" Mullen
Donald J. "Don" Mullen, 95 of Honesdale, died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at home. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Anne V. Fiorenza who died July 25, 2009. The couple married May 14, 1960 in Resurrection Roman Catholic Church in Rye, NY. Born August 29, 1915 on the family farm in Cherry Ridge, he was the son of the late William and Rebecca Piatt Mullen. A lifelong resident of the Honesdale area, he was a 1932 graduate of Honesdale High School. He was a relief manager in the area A&P stores when he was called for duty in the armed forces during World War II. Sworn in New Year's Eve of 1943, he was assigned to the Troops Carrier Command of the Army Air Force. Dicharged January 10, 1946 with the rank of sergeant, he became associated with Hussco Shoe Company. He was production coordinator at the Honesdale factory when they ceased operation. His final years of active employment were spent with S.J. Bailey and sons from where he was retired as office manager of the Honesdale plant. He was a former member of Honesdale Golf Club and an active member of the American Legion. A life member of the David McKelvey Peterson VFW Post 254 of Honesdale, he served a term as Post Commander and several years as its Finance Officer. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. Don also enjoyed ice fishing with his son in Cherry Ridge He is survived by a son Kevin Mullen of Brooklandville, MD; a brother-in-law Dr. George F. Cassidy of Ithaca, NY; a niece Rebecca Edwards of Peckville and a nephew Attorney William Parker of Landenberg, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thusday at 10 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery with full Military Honors. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale Wednesday from 4 to 6.

Charles R. Frindt Sr.
Charles R. Frindt Sr., 91 of Honesdale died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the home of his daughter Victoria Fritsch. He was preceded in death by his first wife Emily Krempasky Richter in 2010 and his second wife the former Roberta M. Buckley in 1991. Born October 31, 1919 in West Hazelton, PA he was the son of the late Lestor and Marie Getz Horn. He attended Oakdale School and played football with the Oakdale Hobos. While playing with that team, he had the opportunity to play with the late Jack Palance, actor. At 16 he joined the CCC Camps at Livonia, PA and then traveled to Kingman, AZ for 3 years. When he was 21 years of age, he enlisted in the US Army and served his country proudly during World War II. He trained as a baker and later transferred into the 505th Parachute Infantry in Fort Bragg. In North Africa, he trained as a "Pathfinder" and later a sniper in Sicily, Italy. He earned a Medal of Honor for his heroic effort liberating St. Mary Agless. This medal was presented 50 years later by General Daniel O'Neil of Honesdale. Charles also was apart of the D-Day invasion at Utah Beach where he receive one of his four Purple Hearts. During his life, he was an accomplished pilot owning 3 planes, a contractor and caretaker of Summitt Camp in Rileyville for 21 years. After his retirment he moved to live with his daughter Vicki in Honesdale. The family would like to thank Dunmore DaVita PD Home Dialysis, nurses Barb and Fran and Drs. Prior and Getz. Frindt of Tafton, Cheryl Cosby of Bedford Hills, NY, Kimberly Best of Waymart, Ben Frindt of Alton, ME and Marie Britton of Browndale; grandchildren CJ Murray of Sandy, UT, Julie Murray Gilbert and husband Cody, Jacilyn Fritsch all of Honesdale, Jeff Frindt of Tafton, Carmen Cosby Smith and husband Jeff of Oregon, Summer and Leigh Ann Cosby both of NY, Charles M. (Chaz) Frindt of Stockertown, PA, Victoria and Nicholas Best of Waymart and Cameron and Tanner Britton of Forest City; great grandchildren Alex and Kami of Tafton, Madelyn and Alanna of Oregon and Allessaneria of NY; his sister Gertrude Moore of Media, PA. He was preceded in death by his son Robert Frindt; his sister Alverna Litty, and brothers James and Raymond Horn. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at 7:30 PM. Friends may visit on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6 to service time. Serena Lynn Helferich
Serena Lynn Helferich, 36, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the home she shared with her longtime boyfriend Michael Pelt of Jessup, PA. Born on July 8, 1974 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. Sr. and Mildred H. Daniels Helferich. She was a graduate of Honesdale High School, then earned a Bachelors Degree in sociology from Mansfield University. Over the years, she enjoyed working at Kids Peace, Wayne County Children and Youth Services, A.R.C. and most recently at George Junior Republic. She loved her coworkers and friends, but especially her "kids" as she fondly referred to her work patients. Serena also volunteered for the American Red Cross. Also surviving is her brother Robert L. Helferich Jr. and wife Diane; nephew Scott and niece Jillian Helferich all of Honesdale; a sister Arleen Zutant of Pittston, PA; a niece Lisa Thiel and husband Bill and great nephews and niece of Harding, PA. She was preceded in death by a sister Sandra Murphy. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 7 PM at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to service time. A memorial scholarship fund has been set up in Serena's name at The Dime Bank, P.O. Box 509 Honesdale, PA 18431 for those wishing to donate in lieu of flowers.

Monica T. Doherty Vavricka
Monica T. Doherty Vavricka, Bordentown, NJ - Monica T. Doherty Vavricka 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2011 at home surrounded by her family. Monica was born April 4, 1923, daughter of John Joseph and Alice Elizabeth Fives Doherty of Rileyville PA. Survived by a daughter, Deborah Vavricka of Chicago, IL; five sons and two  daughters-in-law, Frank and Vicki Vavricka of Mount Laurel, NJ, Christopher and Diane Vavricka of Marlton, NJ, Mark Vavricka and Timothy Vavricka of Bordentown NJ and John Vavricka of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren and sister Kathryn Doherty Lowe of Richfield OH. Preceded in death by husband of 48 years, Frank Vavricka Jr., brothers James and Robert Doherty, sisters Anne Doherty Murphy, Mary Doherty and Helen Doherty Swinton. Valedictorian of Honesdale Catholic High School in 1941, Monica graduated in 1945 with Honors from Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing in New York City with a degree in Obstetrics. Monica worked in obstetrics her entire career having lived in Bermuda and in several locations throughout the US before settling down in Bordentown NJ in 1955. Monica spent the bulk of her career as Head Nurse of Labor and Delivery at St Francis Medical Center in Trenton NJ for 24 years. After retiring, Monica split her time between her home in Bordentown and her summer home in East Meredith, NY. Monica loved gardening, traveling, cooking and her cat of 23 years, Black Kitty. Later in life she developed a passion for water aerobics and cherished spending time with her girlfriends from the Hamilton YMCA, going to lunch and taking trips to the theater. Monica’s life will be celebrated with a funeral mass and burial on Monday, August 1, 1pm at St Joseph’s Church in Rileyville PA. Monica was a parishioner of St Mary’s RC Church in Bordentown, NJ for over 50 years.

Warren Charles Beckwith
Warren Charles Beckwith, 90 of Honesdale, died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Arlene Isabel Carney. The couple married December 12, 1944. Born March 19, 1921 in Paulsboro, NJ he was the son of the late Coe and Ruth Swingle Beckwith. Warren began working at E.J. Stanton Son and Co. in Waymart and later worked for Swartz's Trucking where he drove a milk tanker. In 1980 he retired from Narrowsburg Lumber. Warren loved fishing and the outdoors. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Waymart. Also surviving is his son Gary Beckwith and wife Wanda of Waymart; a cousin Florence Welles of Honesdale; grandchildren Amy Bayly, Bonny Stinnard, Kevin and Blake Beckwith; great grandchildren Jamie, Eric and Melissa Bayly, Casey Collins, Lexy Stinnard and Hayly Beckwith. He was preceded in death by his brothers Donald, Walter, and Douglas Beckwith and a half sister Thelma Stratton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale with Pastor Leo Mancini of the First Baptist Church of Waymart officiating. Julia "Dolly" Colavito
Julia "Dolly" Colavito of Honesdale, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her first husband Joseph Lavenduski in 1967 and her second husband Nicholas Colavito in 1987. Born in Brooklyn, NY she was the daughter and last surviving member of the John and Maria Pranzitelli family. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Bay Ridge High School both in Brooklyn. While living in New York, Dolly worked as a bank teller and after moving to Florida, she worked as a teachers aid and helped handicapped children before retiring and moving back to Pennsylvania. Dolly was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale where she was a member of their Altar and Rosary Society, a Eucharistic Minister and participated on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Catholic  daughters of the Americas, Court St. Martin and participated in the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. While living in Florida, Dolly became an active member in community participating in several organizations. Surviving is her son Joseph Lavenduski and wife Nancy; a daughter Debra Jo Lavenduski Gianchetta all of Honesdale; a sister-in-law Ruth Pranzitelli of Waymart; grandchildren Stacy Haddix, Tony and Megan Lavenduski and Madison Gianchetta; great grandchildren Nathan and Logan Haddix; nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. As per her request, cremation will follow at Maple Hill Crematory. Bonnie P. Lewis
Bonnie P. Lewis, 64, of Wilton, ME and formerly of Honesdale, died early Saturday, August 13, 2011 surrounded by her family. She was born in Carbondale, PA, Sept. 12, 1946, a daughter of late John and Edith (Wilson) Price and predeceased by her sister Linda Price. Bonnie graduated from Greene Dreher High School in Newfoundland and attended Mansfield University. Ms. Lewis worked as a secretary for the District Magistrate for several years and then was elected District Magistrate herself. She retired after 24 years of dedicated service to the Honesdale Community as the Honorable Bonnie P. Lewis. In addition to her public service Ms. Lewis, loved to help people, in fact, dedicated her life to it. Bonnie was an avid sports fan who loved Honesdale Community sports, Penn State, da’ Bears, but especially Walter Payton. She enjoyed auctions, yard sales, knitting and collecting Christmas ornaments. Bonnie was well known for her infectious smile and despite a long-term battle with liver and kidney disease, Bonnie kept a fun-loving and positive attitude. Bonnie lived for her family and friends, she truly touched most everyone she met. She is survived by her children, Jodi Cordes and her husband, Robert of Wilton, ME and Kyle Lewis and his wife, April of Ashville, NC; a brother, Clayton of PA; 2 sisters, Candace Bauman of PA and Alisa Kay Price of Promised Land, PA; three grandchildren, Madison and Isabelle of Wilton and Skyler of NC. Funeral services will be held on Friday at the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale at 11 AM. As per her request, cremation will follow at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 9 and Friday morning from 9 to 10:30 at the Wesley Room of the Central United Methodist Church. Augusta Mary Stegner
Augusta Mary Stegner, 84 of Honesdale died Saturday, August 13, 2011 at AseraCare Hospice at Mid Valley Hospital in Peckville. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde A. Stegner Sr. on January 10, 2011. The couple married May 3, 1947. Born June 10, 1927 in Tusten, NY she was the daughter and last surviving member of the William and Laura Gilson Hopkins family. A housewife and mother, Augusta worked as a piece maker for the former Sherman Mills in Hawley for 30 years. Being a homebody, she enjoyed baking and flower gardening. She loved being with her grandchildren and enjoyed her pets over the years. Surviving is her son Clyde A. Stegner Jr. and wife Tammy of Beach Lake; a daughter Bonnie Walsh and fiancée Tom Frisk of Honesdale; grandchildren Sarah and Joey Walsh, Clyde A. Stegner III and Augusta Mae Stegner; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Delzine Gilson and James and Elwin Hopkins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 AM at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale with Rev. Bill Frisk officiating. Interment will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery. Robert M. Lindgren
Robert M. Lindgren, 89, of Tyler Hill, passed away at Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart on Sunday, August 14, 2011 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Muriel Wolff. The couple married January 27, 1945. Born on Sept 3, 1921 in New York, he was the son of the late Milton and Julia Richardson Lindegren. He resided in Livingston, NJ for most of his life before moving to Tyler Hill in 1997. Bob was a Navy Veteran of World War II serving in the US, France and Africa from 1942 to 1945 as an Aviation Machinist Mate. He participated in the 2007 Tour of Honor to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. Prior to his retirement, Bob was a tool and die maker at Ronson Art Metal Works and Joyal Products in NJ. During his life, he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, gardening as well as photography and building remote control model boats. In his younger days, he even built his own boat so he could go deep sea fishing with his  daughters and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. Also surviving are his daughter Patricia and husband Frank Stoeckle of Tyler Hill, Pa. daughter Kathleen and husband William Murphy of Galilee, Pa., beloved grandchildren Lisa Stoeckle of Honesdale, Pa, Kevin Stoeckle of Castle Rock, Co., Douglas Murphy and wife Cynthia of West Caldwell, NJ and Kyle Murphy of Livingston, NJ. He also is survived by triplet great grandsons, Chase, Jackson and Logan Murphy also of West Caldwell, NJ. Bob was predeceased by his parents and a brother Richard Lindgren. He will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc. 428 Main St. Honesdale at Noon. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Galilee. Frances S. Cook
Frances S. Cook, 100 of Freehold, NJ and formerly of Honesdale died Wednesday, August 17, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband Marshall Cook on January 11, 2002. The couple married June 27, 1936. Born August 6, 1911 in Whites Valley, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the late Levi Phillip and Mary Elizabeth Rutledge Stark family. Frances was a graduate of Pleasant Mount High School, class of 1930 . A homemaker, she also worked at Kreitner's Restaurant in Honesdale as a waitress. She was a member of the  daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale before moving to New Jersey. Frances enjoyed following politics and keeping up on the news. She also enjoyed crocheting and cooking. Frances was a caring and supportive mother and grandmother. She loved all her grandchildren and enjoyed being a part of their lives. Surviving are her  daughters Marcia Murray and husband Richard of Morganville, NJ and Marilyn Ludwig of Maryland; her grandchildren Connie Lieberman and husband Ron, Andrea Murray, Tricia Spinelli and husband Roy, Mikey Murray, Chrissy Murray, Pete Murray, Julie Murray and Scott Ludwig; 10 great grandchildren; special niece Cheryl Soja, special great nieces Tina Dodge and husband Eddie and Tanya Soja; and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Alta Spencer and Evelyn Bryant; her brother Stan, Phil, Chuck, Lee and Hank Stark and a son-in-law Wallace Ludwig. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale. Interment will be in Green Grove Cemetery.

Pauline Chase
Pauline Chase, 80 of Hawley, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband James H. Chase on March 15, 2011. The couple married February 27, 1954. Born December 19, 1930 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Shannon Walker. She was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1948. She worked with her husband at Jim Chase Ford in Hawley as a secretary and later worked at The Margaret Shop in Honesdale. Pauline was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and attended the former St. Joseph's Church in White Mills. She was also a member of the Catholic  daughters of the Americas, Court St. Martin. Pauline was known for her love of sweets especially chocolate. She was loved greatly by her family who looked forward to her visits and all the fun that they would have. Surviving is her daughter Erin Vennie and husband Scott of Tafton, her granddaughter Shannon Vennie; her sisters Cathy Kelly and husband Joe of Pleasant Mount, Elizabeth Gallik and Ann Nonnemacher both of Honesdale and Mary Davies of California; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Jean Greiner; a brother Joseph Walker and infant brother James Walker. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. Cremation will follow at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. Mary Margaret Cullen-Edsall
Mary Margaret Cullen-Edsall, 84, of Forest City, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale. She is the wife of the late Charles Edsall who died in 1968. Born in New York City,NY she is the daughter of the late James and Martha Kanetzke Cullen. Mary was raised in Narrowsburg, NY and graduated from Narrowsburg Central School. She worked for the War Department in NYC during WWII. A housewife and mother, Mary and her husband raised their family in Honesdale. She was also an office manager at Cove Haven and later at Garring's until retiring. Mary was passionate about cross stitching, and enjoyed the company of her companion, Stanley, whom was a very dear friend and became an excellent caretaker. She is survived by her companion, Stanley Besset, with whom she resided. a daughter, Elisabeth Mansell and husband Dennis Sr. of Gatlinburg,TN, a brother John Cullen of Syracuse,NY; a sister, Frances Pickering and husband Lohr of Cumming, GA, grandchildren, Dennis Mansell Jr. and wife Stacie and Donald Mansell; great- grandchildren, Ben and Jessica; nephews, John Cullen Jr, David and Dan Peck; nieces, Donna Peck and Barbara Green. She was preceded in death by her son, Corporal James Edsall, US Marine Corps killed in Vietnam in 1968 and a sister, Margaret (Peg), and her husband Wesley Perry. As per her request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory, Archbald,PA. A private service will be held at the families convenience. Ruth (Oliver) Loomis
Ruth (Oliver) Loomis, 89 of Honesdale, died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Loomis. Born April 7, 1922 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha Bellamy Oliver. Ruth was a self-employed beautician and was a member of the Honesdale Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She is survived by her son-in-law Ronald Malti of Hawley; a sister Blanche Power of Honesdale; grandchildren John Malti and wife Nicole, Christina Olear and Amy Malti; great grandchildren Victor and Nicholas Olear, Jenna Malti, Kayla and Nick Bates. She was preceded in death by her daughter Ruth Ann Malti on March 24, 2011; her sister Mary Moak; brothers Russel, Carl, Daniel and Emmons Oliver. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 11 AM at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc. 428 Main St. Honesdale. Friends may visit on Thursday from 9 to service time. Interment will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

Doris J. M. (Cease) Schaeffer
Doris J. M. (Cease) Schaeffer, 88, of Honesdale, PA, died Sunday, June 19, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce A. Schaeffer on January 18, 2000. Born August 26, 1922 in Wilkes Barre, PA, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the late Earl L. and Jennie (Jean) Worrell Cease family. Doris was descendent of the founding families of Ceasetown, PA and Klingertown, PA. She was a strong Christian. An avid reader, Doris was talented in quilting, sewing, crocheting and ceramics. She enjoyed the friendships she found at Maple City Apartments and was active in their community. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are her  daughters Patricia M. McGinnis of Honesdale, PA, Kathleen A. Gauss and husband James of Owatonna, MN, Frances Zegar and husband Eugene of West Chester, PA, and Christine S. Walker and husband Thomas J. of Princeton, NJ; sister-in-laws Amy Cease of Honesdale and Dorothy Cease of Somerville, NJ; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Joseph Jacob Smith and her brothers Earl (Jack), William (Bill), James (Jimmy), Charles (Charlie) and Warren (Bruce) Cease. Visitation will be Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale from 2 to 3:30 followed by a service at 3:30 PM. Cremation will follow at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. Private interment will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Texas Township at the convenience of the family. Rose M. Maculaitis
Rose M. Maculaitis, 92 of Honesdale, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Maculaitis on June 2, 1992. The couple married in January 1948 in Towanda. Born February 1, 1919 in Towanda, PA she was the daughter and last surviving member of the late Peter and Maria Pietropaoli Gabriel family. She and her husband moved to Beach Lake and lived on Route 652 shorly after being married and resided there until 2008 when she moved to Ellen Memorial. Rose worked several places, but will be remembered by most as an aid at the Stourbridge School on Park St. in Honesdale. She loved to cook and bake, well known in the area for her homemade breads and Italian cookies. Rose always made fresh bread to take to her appointments with Dr. Propst. Rose was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Beach Lake. Surviving are her sons Joseph Maculaitis and wife Sandra of Greentown and Richard Maculaitis of Mountain Top; she was the loving grandmother to Amy, Erin, Andrea, Scott and 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Robert Maculaitis who died May 27, 2010 and 5 sisters and a brother. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. Crremation will follow at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery in Honesdale. As per her request, there is no public visitation. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.

Joseph Michael Bird
Joseph Michael Bird, 20 of Honesdale, died unexpectedly Monday, June 27, 2011 at his home. Born July 31, 1990 in Honesdale, he is the son of Robert C. Bird of Scranton and Melva Chandler Beatty of Sayre. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 2008. Joe was employed as a diesel mechanic at Prime Inc. in Pittston and prior worked at David Elliot Poultry in Scranton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and demolition derbies. Joe loved his nieces and nephews and spending time with them. Also surviving are his brothers Bobby and Howard Bird; his sisters Tracy Bird, Christine Clever and Tia Conklin; his step- Father Leonard Beatty nephews John "JC" Clever III and Ryan Bird; nieces Savannah and Isabella Bird; aunts and uncles and many cousins. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Saturday from 9 to 11. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Robert Bird c/o Wayne Bank, 717 Main St. Honesdale, PA 18431; please note: For Joseph Bird Memorial Fund in memo.
