David S. Bright

Honesdale, Pa. — David S. Bright, 51 of Tafton, PA, died Friday October 8, 2010 in the Lehigh Valley Hospital at Cedar Crest, Allentown, PA after an illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Cecilia Auriemma.

Born in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Ernest F. Bright and Beverly Sanford Bright.

David was an outdoorsman, hunter, and a bowman. For many years he was a volunteer for the Lake Region Jr. Buckhorn Football Team.

He is also survived by two sons: David Bright and Adam Bright, at home; three brothers: James Bright of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, Lawrence Bright of Lodi, NJ, and Ernest Bright and his wife Donna of Oakridge, NJ; sister-in-law, Rebecca Dean and her husband George of Matawah, NJ; brother in law, James Auriemma of Bayonne, NJ; three dear friends, Art Hughson, Jim Downey, and George Linsenbigler; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday November 14, 2010 in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431 with Rev. Lloyd Canfield officiating.

Craig W. Mosher

Hawley, Pa. — Craig W. Mosher, retired Master Chief U.S. Navy, 52, of Hawley died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.

Mr. Mosher was born January 11, 1957, in Honesdale and was the son of Shirley (Cron) Mosher and the late Raymond Mosher.

He graduated from Wallenpaupack Area High School in 1974. He was especially proud of his athletic days helping Wallenpaupack win basketball and baseball district titles.

Craig had a sterling Navy career of 30 years. He took part in both operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Desert Storm. He was part of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets of operation and he worked directly under many Admirals including Senator John McCain. He served on many ships including the Midway and Kitty Hawk aircraft carriers and was involved with Ghost Riders and Desert Ducks while serving in the Navy.

He was greatly loved by many friends and family. Craig was a happy, generous man. His zest for life lifted everyone around him. He lived to fish. He will be greatly missed by everyone he touched in their lives.

He is survived by: His daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bobby Mapp of Virginia Beach, VA; Grandchildren, Liberty, Bobby and Savannah of Virginia Beach, VA; his mother, Shirley (Cron) Mosher; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Linda Mosher of Waymart; Scott and Darlene Mosher of Hawley; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 18 at 1 pm at Hawley United Methodist Church, 315 Church St., Hawley with Rev. Martin L. Cox, Jr., Pastor officiating. Visiting will be from 12 noon to 1 pm at the church.

Cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory in Lake Ariel.

William Sandlin

Hawley, Pa. — On October 19, 2010, the “Sandlin Girls”, son Bill and Una Clawsey lost the love of their lives, their hero and biggest fan, William Henry Sandlin. He was born September 9, 1923, the son of Henry and Anna Sandlin and lived most of his life in Hawley.

Sandlin served in the United States Army Paratroopers in World War II and earned the distinguished medal of a Purple Heart.

He ran his own propane business and then entered real estate and an appraisal business working until 2008.

He is survived by his wife, Una, his other loves, his children, Kathleen and Tim Holt, Susan and Jim Russell, Mary Jean and Randy Saylor and William Sandlin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Natalie Holt, TSgt USAF T. Jason Holt, Melissa Russell, Jesse Russell, Jordan Sandlin, Carrie Saylor, Aylim Gerig and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Holt, all of whom he adored.

He is also survived by his sister, June Sherman. He loved easily and laughed hard and had many friends and relatives who loved him and will miss him and his stories and songs.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Mary. His brother, Walter Billings and many dear, life long friends. It has been our privilege to love him and be loved by him. He was our world and we were his. He taught us all of life’s great lessons- love, respect, kindness, a love of nature- to laugh, sing and dance and taught them well. We are so grateful he was ours. He passed peacefully with his true love Una, who took such kind loving care of him and his  daughters, Kathy and Jeannnie by his side, with his daughter Susie and son Bill there in his heart. Thank you, Dad, for the cherished memories in our hearts- we will love you forever.

According to his wishes, he was cremated in North Carolina. There is a memorial schedule service in the Spring to be held by his beloved river and final resting place. That date will be announced. Those who want to make a final donation can do so to the Hospice and Palliative care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, North Carolina, 28081.

John "Jack" P. Brown

Hawley, Pa. — John "Jack" P. Brown, 79, of Hawley died unexpectedly Friday, December 10, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, the former Patricia Ann Kelly, in 2001.

Born March 24, 1931, in Paterson, NJ, he was the only son of the late John A. and Kathryn Geisler Brown. He was a 1949 graduate of Hawley High School and a 1953 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science. He was veteran of the United States Army who served during the time of the Korean Conflict.

Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Brown's Pharmacy from 1962 to 2002. The original location of the pharmacy was in the Hawley Odd Fellows Building until 1962 when he purchased the former Hawley Bank building which was then being used as the Hawley Post Office. Mr. Brown was a member of BVM Queen of Peace RC Church and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus Bishop Hoban Council and past Grand Knight. He was a lifelong member of the NRA and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association. He was one of the founding members of the Hawley Ambulance Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and flying.

He is survived by five  daughters: Patricia Ann McHugh and her husband Michael of East Stroudsburg, Margaret "Peggy" Frey of Bath, Bonnie Gumble and her husband Todd of Lake Ariel, Stephanie Brown of Hawley and Kathleen Johnson and her husband Thomas of Wind Gap; two sons: John and his wife Maureen and Christopher, all of Hawley; ten grandchildren: Michael, Katie, Jackie, Cole, Sean, Brianna, Ryan, Brooke, Harley, and Sage.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shaun Patrick McHugh.

The Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, with Rev. Irudaya Illuri, Assistant Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in B.V.M. Queen Of Peace Cemetery, Hawley.

George N. Davis

Newfoundland — George N. Davis, Newfoundland, died Saturday, December 25, 2010 at home after an illness. His wife of 25 years is the former Catherine S Lee.

He was born in Newburgh, NY and was the son of the late Leland and Alice Cox Davis. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a graduate of Waymart High School and had served in the National Guard. Prior to his illness he had been employed as a machinist at Hook Machine Co and had been previously employed by Madden Oil and Shaffer’s Sawmill.

His wife and kids were first in his life. Relatives and friends always knew they could call on him for help because was the fix-it handyman and good Samaritan. He was an avid Nascar fan.

Surviving are a son George and his companion Ashley George and her daughter Raylyn at home, a daughter Kellie C. at home; brothers Scott of Sterling, Gary of Waymart, Richard of Madisonville; sisters Nancy Krisovitch of Sterling and Debra Woederman of Tenn.

Preceded in death by a brother Thomas and a sister Jeanette Davis.

A celebration of George’s life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd Lake Ariel officiated by Rev. Peter A. Richert of the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Mt. Pocono.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time.

Cremation will take place in the Lake Region Crematory at the James Wilson Funeral Home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart 130 Wilkes-Barre Blvd, Wilkes-Barre. Pa.

Lorine Lester

Lackawaxen, Pa. — Lorine Lester, age 80, of Dingman's Ferry and formerly of Lackawaxen, died Monday, December 20, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.

Mrs. Lester was born December 10, 1930 in Draper, NC and was the daughter of the late Luther and Stella (Higgins-Warren) Shropshire. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, a sister, Thelma Parrott and a brother J.C. Shropshire.

She was a retired bank teller at First National Bank of Hawley, The Lackawaxen Branch.

Mrs. Lester was a former member VFW Aux. in Lackawaxen, Ecker Haupt Post and member of Tigue, Engle, Smith Post 851 in Dingman's Ferry and the Wednesday afternoon card club in Lackawaxen. She loved playing bingo and her many pets and always enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by three  daughters & sons-in-law, Linda & Fred Gelderman of Hawley, PA; Ann & Art Hoehne of Gilbert, PA; Susan & Bill Reser of Dingman's Ferry, PA; four grandchildren, Steven & Bridget Gelderman; Michael & Darlene Gelderman; Melody Cawiezell & Matthew Rodrigues; granddaughter, Michael & Lisa Anthony; and seven great grandchildren, Brandon, Shiann, Matthew, Michael Jr., Leah, Callie And Cate.

Private interment to be held at a later date in Lackawaxen Cemetery.

Doris L. Nelson

Greeley, Pa. — Doris L. Nelson, 94 of Greeley, PA passed away Saturday December 4, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Greeley, PA and served as secretary for the Ladies Aid. Mrs. Nelson was past secretary for Marsch-Kellogg American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary, past president and secretary for the Pike County Council of Republican Women and was also a member of the Greeley Grange #2053.

The daughter of the late T. Fredrick and Gertrude (Quick) Kellogg she was born on June 25, 1916 in Milford, PA. She married Edward D. Nelson on January 28, 1965 in Milford, PA. She was predeceased by her first husband Calvin J. Rosencrance.

Survivors include her husband, three children; John Rosencrance of Johnstown, PA, Fredrick Rosencrance of North Orwell, PA, Linda Bonner of Greeley, PA; 13 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Russell Kellogg, her sister Bernice Hoehne, her daughter Carol Grim in 1996, her son Steven Rosencrance in 2003 and her granddaughter Stacey Crellin.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday December 14 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Greeley PA.

Burial will take place in Greeley Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Edward "Ed" Walter Rowe

Honesdale, Pa. — Edward "Ed" Walter Rowe, 84, of Honesdale, PA passed away on December 17, 2010, after a brief illness at his home with his family by his side.

His wife of 60 years is the former June Frisbe who he lovingly cared for over many years. Born September 14, 1926 in Adelia, he was the son of the late Jacob and Carrie Rowe.

In his younger years he was a self-employed lumberman and for most of his life he operated Rowe brothers Dairy Farm with his brothers Bob and Joe and later with his son Randy and nephew Joey.

Ed was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman and in the early years played baseball for Cherry Ridge. He had a kennel and enjoyed raising beagles for hunting and he had a passion for working with horses, particularly Clydesdales. Ed's sense of humor was his prized attribute, he could be counted on to say something funny that would make you think, laugh, and realize the joke was on you.

He is survived by his son Randy and his wife Sandy, of Honesdale, and his grandchildren, Amber Rowe Cocks and Cory Rowe, grandson Jake and his wife Teresa who all cared for him throughout his illness. A son Edward and his wife Sue, of Seelyville, and his grandchildren Melissa, Justin, and Joshua.

Also surviving are 3 brothers, Bob and his wife Madeline, Jim and his wife Lou, and Joe and his wife Katie, all of Honesdale. Ed thoroughly enjoyed his time with his great-grandchildren Hayden and Delaney Rowe and Carter Cocks.

He was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Wulff and a brother Bill Rowe.

The Rowe Family would like to thank all of their friends and family that supported them over the years especially the last several months with a special thanks to Madeline Rowe.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 19, from noon - 4 p.m. at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St., Hawley. The Funeral Service will be Monday, December 20, at 10:30 am at Teeters' East Chapel with Pastor William Rushik of South Canaan Free Methodist Church officiating.

Gregory Alan Roy

Candensis, Pa. — Gregory (Greg) Alan Roy, age 44, of Canadensis died Saturday night as a result of an auto accident on Route 390 in Greene Township, Pike County. He was the husband of Kelly (Gearhart) Roy, at home.

Born in Greenville, Maine son of Sandra (Lawless) Roy, Canadensis and the late Yvon Roy, he had resided in Greene Township for the past 23 years, and prior to that in East Stroudsburg.

Greg owned and operated Greg Roy Logging, a business he took over from his  Father in 1990. He was of the Catholic faith. Greg was an avid snowmobiler and member of the Lost Trails Snowmobile Club. He also enjoyed traveling the countryside.

In addition to his wife Kelly and mother Sandra, he is survived by two sons, Jesse Ryan Roy, Greentown and Drew Alan Roy, Newfoundland; two step- daughters, Ally Gearhart, Moscow and Malynda Galka, Canadensis; two brothers, Gille (Sheri) Roy, Canadensis and Steven (Nancy) Roy, Canadensis and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4 in the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, Main St., Newfoundland. Rev. Fr. Alfred Vito will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling. Friends may call Friday, Dec. 3 at the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, 201 Route 191, Village of LaAnna, South Sterling, PA.

Memorial remembrances may be made to ARC of Northeastern Pennsylvania, 115 Meadow Ave., Scranton, PA 18505.

Norman “Red” Helms

Milford, Pa. — Norman “Red” Helms, 81, of Milford, PA, died at Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton, NJ, on Thursday, November 11, 2010. At age 15, “Red” was hired by the Manager of the Milford Grand Union, Frank Murphy, to stock shelves. This was a beginning of a 50-year career with the Grand Union Company. He worked his way up to manager of the Branchville Grand Union, Branchville, NJ, and then returned to the Milford store as Manager until his retirement.

“Red” joined the Milford Fire Department on January 5, 1955. He was at first a driver of fire equipment, and then a second assistant chief followed by a three-year term as first assistant chief and then voted chief. “Red” was elected chief twice and was very active in fund raising. For his 55 years of service with the Milford Fire Department and Rescue, he was recognized many times for his outstanding and dedicated service. “Red” is a Milford Borough Councilman and has served several terms on the council.

The son of the late Edison and Myrtle (Hoffman) Helms, he was born on July 8, 1929 in Milford, PA. He married Joyce (Zitone) Helms on February 25, 1951 in Montague, NJ.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 3 children: Vicki Walter, Milford, PA; Cheryl Bellreng, Niagara Falls, NY; Kevin Helms, Milford, PA; brother, Lee Helms, Matamoras, PA; 2 sisters: Lorraine Gregory, Milford, PA and Shirley Orben, Holland, OH; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edison, Jr. and Fred.

Friends may call at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 W. Harford St. Milford, PA from 2 to 4 p.m. & 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 111 E. High St., Milford PA on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Milford Cemetery, Dingman Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made in his name to: Milford Fire & Ambulance, PO Box 1369, Milford PA 18337 or Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, 99 Sparta Road, Newton, NJ 07860.
