Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Donna Lee (Reed) McCurdy
Donna Lee (Reed) McCurdy, 62, formerly of Montgomery Church Road, Greencastle, died at 11:15 p.m., Nov. 26, 2006 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born July 29, 1944 in Greenvillage, she was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley and Verma (Hammond) Reed.

H. Lorraine Anderson
H. Lorraine (Shank) Anderson, 73, a resident of The Village Of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, and formerly of Greencastle, died at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 in the nursing home.

Born April 15, 1933 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Ross A. and Ethel (Diehl) Shank Brown.

Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and served as the manager of the former Castlegreen Laundromat, Greencastle.

She was a member of the Calvary Bible Church, Greencastle, where she sang on the church choir.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Mt. Vernon Chapter 398 Order Of The Eastern Star, Waynesboro. She was a former member of the Greencastle-Antrim Homemakers, Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club and Greencastle- Antrim Senior Women's Club.

She enjoyed singing with the Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus and the Mercersburg Community Chorus.

Mrs. Anderson was a 1951 graduate of Greencastle High School.

She and her husband, Donald G. "Andy" Anderson were married Sept. 9, 1951 in Greencastle. They enjoyed square dancing, traveling together and had served as registrars for the Old Home Week celebration. He died on Jan. 29, 2001.

Mrs. Anderson also enjoyed quilting, rug making and crocheting.

She is survived by a son, Lynn M. Anderson of Millersville; two  daughters, Leagh Anderson of State College and Diane A. Fry of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Timothy, Alexandra, Zachary and Maya; one sister, Carol Poe Huybert of Everett; and a niece, Carla Pennensi of West Virginia.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Shank, and infant brother, George Shank.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, Dec. 9 in Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Glen A. Miller officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of one's choice.

Gary Lee Oberholzer
Gary Lee Oberholzer, 44, of 10462 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, was pronounced dead Thursday evening, Dec. 14, in his home. His death was unexpected. Born April 21, 1962 in Chambersburg, he was the son of Bernard D. and Frances J. (Stoner) Oberholzer of Williamson. He spent his early life in Williamson.

Faber Charles Knepper
Faber Charles Knepper, of Hummingbrook Farm, Cool Hollow Road, Greencastle, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006 at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Born in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Charles Faber and Irene (Gourley) Knepper.

He was a 1949 graduate of the Valley Forge Military Academy and College and attended the University of Michigan.

Mr. Knepper was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War and Austria.

He was a self-employed musician, music store owner and technician.

Mr. Knepper was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church.

He was also a member of the Greencastle V.F.W., Korean War Veterans Association Charter 142 of Frederick, Md., the Spires Brass Band of Frederick, Md. and the Wayne Band, Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Pamela (Weaver) Knepper, whom he married June 16, 1979; a daughter, Cheryl Knepper of Pennsylvania; stepbrothers, Eddie Knepper and Jeff Knepper; step-sister Jenny Knepper; one aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no viewing.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the Valley Forge Military Academy Chapel Memorial Garden.

Memorial donations may be made to the John R. Marsh Cancer Center at 11110 Medical Campus Rd., Suite 129, Hagerstown, Md. 21742 or the Hospice of the Good Shepherd at 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements were handled by the J.L.Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md.

Anna E. Garling
Anna E. (Saylor) Garling, 89, and a resident of the Falling Spring Nursing And Rehabilitation Center Chambersburg, and formerly of 240 East Madison St. Greencastle, died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday Dec. 17, 2006 in the nursing center where she had been a resident since March of 2004.

Born Dec. 2, 1917 in Antrim Township, she was the daughter of the late Preston R. and Mary Grace (Diehl) Saylor.

Mrs. Garling was a homemaker and had worked at the former GEM Garment Co., Greencastle.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Greencastle, where she helped in the nursery department.

She and her husband, J. Leiter "Lite" Garling were married May 29, 1940 in Hagerstown, Md. He died on Jan. 18, 2004.

Mrs. Garling enjoyed being with family and baby sitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family.

She is survived by two  daughters, Nancy L. Murray of Greencastle and Judy A. Garling of Carlisle; a son, William K. Garling of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David Saylor and Richard Saylor, and one sister, Sarah Parks.

Agraveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21 in Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church cemetery near Upton, with Pastor Stacy Crawford officiating.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests that flowers be omitted with memorial contributions be given to the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Glenn M. Smith
Glenn M. Smith, 85, a resident of Providence Place, Chambersburg, and formerly of North Port, Fla. died at 1:15 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1921 in Clay Hill, he was the son of the late Frank M. and Grace (Miller) Smith.

He was the husband of Jean B. (Benchoff) Smith of Providence Place, Chambersburg. They were married Oct. 10, 1942.

Mr. Smith was a professor in the State University of New York at Farmingdale.

He was a member of the Greencastle High School Class of 1939 and a 1943 graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle.

He was a major in the 8th Air Force flying as a B-24 pilot in 35 missions over Germany during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Heidelberg Church, Marion.

He was a Past Master of the Suburbia Lodge 1152 of Levittown, N.Y. and also presided over numerous York and Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a past Royal Patron, Order of the Amaranth; Past Watchman of The Shepherds, of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Clan 78 Hillbillies. He was a life member of the Gettysburg Moose Lodge, The Retired Officers Association, Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association, 8th Air Force Historical Society and the International Order of Old Bastards.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by  daughters, Saundra Storder of Wantagh, N.Y. and Glenda Orndorff of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; son, Alexis Smith of Fishersville, Va.; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three half brothers, Donald Smith, Harold Smith and Norman Garnes.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, Dec. 16 in Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Adam Leeper officiating.

Burial was in Quincy cemetery, Quincy, with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post 1599 Honor Guard.

Mount Pisgah Masonic Lodge held a a memorial service the evening of Friday, Dec. 15 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospitals For Children: International Headquarters, 2900 N. Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL33607.

Emma E. Burkholder
Emma Elizabeth (Martin) Burkholder, 82, of 16535 Fairview Road, Hagerstown, Md. died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006 in the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 18, 1924 in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Abraham H. and Bertha E. (Meyers) Martin.

She and her husband, Jacob H. Burkholder were married February 6, 1947. He died on April 30, 1988.

Mrs. Burkholder was a member of the Paradise Mennonite Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by two sons, Harold R. Burkholder of Greencastle and Richard E. Burkholder of Williamsport, Md.; two sisters, Naomi C. Eby of State Line, Pa. and Mabel I. Martin of Smithsburg, Md.; one brother, Ira M. Martin of Hagerstown; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four foster great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: two sons, Donald Burkholder and Lewis Burkholder; one brother Orville Martin; a sister Mary Horst; one grandson, Dennis Burkholder; and a greatgrandson, Clayton Martin.

Services were held the morning of Monday, Dec. 18 in Millers Mennonite Church near Leitersburg, Md. with the Paradise Mennonite Church Ministry officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Janis Lee Baumbaugh
Janis Lee Baumbaugh, 73, of Greencastle, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, in the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md. Born Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1933, in Hagerstown Md., she was the daughter of the late Leroy R. Weddle Sr. and the late Bessie Marie Keefer Weddle.

Prayer Analeise Wenger
Prayer Analeise Wenger, 2, of 14 Creek Stone Drive, Mont Alto, died at 4:56 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, in the emergency room of the Chambersburg Hospital. She had been in failing health since an accident a year and a half ago.

Born Feb. 6, 2004, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Michael L. and Lisa M. (Tarsa) Wenger.

Prayer enjoyed spending time with her puppy, being outdoors, Christmas lights and listening to music.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Madison R. Wenger and Faith A.M. Wenger, both at home; one brother, Loren Q. Wenger, at home; maternal grandmother, Loretta E. Tarsa of Thorndale; paternal grandparents, Jay R. and Peach C. Wenger of Waynesboro; paternal great-grandparents, Alfred M. and Sylvia E. Wenger of Waynesboro; and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Bernard S. Tarsa, and paternal great-grandparents, Charles W. and Leona Murray.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 20 in St. Andrew Catholic Church, Waynesboro, with  Father David S. Keller officiating. Pastor Wilbur F. Besecker presented the eulogy.

Burial followed in Air Hill cemetery, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: A Prayer for Prayer Trust, C/O First National Bank of Greencastle, P.O. Box 8, Greencastle, PA, 17225.

Arrangements were handled by Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Robert L. Hoover
Robert L. Hoover, 67, of 1024 Warm Spring Road, Lot 34, Chambersburg, died at 1:46 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 in ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, where he was a resident since August 2006.

Born June 27, 1939 in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Jacob H. and Helen M. (Ritchey) Hoover.

He was employed for 30 years as a custodian in the Chambersburg Area School District, having retired in 2004. In his earlier years, he worked at Modern Home Appliances, Chambersburg.

Mr. Hoover was a social member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319, Greencastle, and was a member of the St. Thomas American Legion.

He enjoyed doing painting, handyman and farm hand work, as well as making wood crafts.

He and his wife, Victoria K. "Vicky" (Reed) Hoover were married Sept. 28, 1992.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Gladys A. Shifflett of Williamson and Mary Ellen Myers of Waynesboro; a half sister, Mary Louise Johnson of Waynesboro; a stepson, Troy A. Ericson of Fayetteville; two step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Hoover, and two sisters, Arlene Elizabeth Mowen and Phyllis Jean Hoover.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, Dec. 23 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Chaplain Chuck Ryan officiating.

Burial was be in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice, 1200 Walnut Bottom Road, Suite 302, Carlisle, PA 17013.

June I. Niswander
June I. Niswander, 73, of 3672 Coseytown Road, Greencastle, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006 in her home. Born June 22, 1933 in St. Thomas, she was the daughter of the late Roy E. and Pearl (Gsell) Niswander. She worked as an in-home nurse and caregiver.

Beth A. Early
Mrs. Beth A. (Stoneking) Early, 53, of 8617 Paul Harry Drive, Chambersburg, died at 2:25 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in the emergency room of the Chambersburg Hospital. Death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes. Born May 25, 1953 in New Martinsville, W.Va., she was the daughter of Helen (Burrows) Stoneking of Middlebourne, W.Va., and the late Ralph Stoneking.

Ferne M. Walck
Mrs. Ferne M. (Krusey) Walck, 94, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home and formerly of E. Baltimore Street, Greencastle, died at 9:35 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in the nursing home. She had been in failing health since August 2005. Born Feb. 24, 1912, in Lanalk, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Charles “C.F.” and Fanny (Kielman) Krusey.

Charles W. Stotler
Charles W. Stotler, 90, of 310 Tyrone St., Greencastle, and a short term resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, died at 1:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 in the Waynesboro Hospital. Born Feb. 27, 1916 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Mary Jane (Sellers) Stotler.
