Velma J. McVitty O'Neil
December 24, 1908 - February 10, 2009
Velma J. McVitty O'Neil, age 100, formerly of Amberson and Lurgan, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in the Aprontree Personal Care Home, Spring Run, PA. Born on December 24, 1908 in Amberson, she was the last living daughter of the late David H. and Mary Ann Culbertson McVitty.

A graduate of the former Shippensburg State Teachers College, now Shippensburg University, Velma taught elementary school for 18 years. She also served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

She is survived by one son, Timothy E. (and wife, Jennifer) O'Neil of Mercersburg; two granddaughters, Shani Calhoun of Henderson, NV and Katie O'Neil of Clear Spring, MD; one great grandson, Jacob Calhoun of Henderson, NV; and several nieces and nephews. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna M. Baker, Alice Magee, Ola Stewart, and Kathleen Miller.

A private graveside service will be held in Amberson Union cemetery with Rev. Marlin "Butch" Neil officiating. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements are entrusted to the Agett-Geisel Funeral Home, Dry Run.

Ray W. Fickes, Jr.
April 21, 1930 - July 11, 2008
Ray W. Fickes, Jr., 78, of 529 Coldspring Road, Fayetteville, died Friday, July 11, 2008 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 21, 1930 in Fayetteville, he was a son of the late Ray W. Sr. and Hilda Shaffer Fickes. Ray served in the US Army during the Korean War and was employed by Hess Manufacturing in Quincy for more than 45 years. He was active with the Fayetteville Athletic Association. An avid outdoorsman, Ray enjoyed outdoor work and hunting. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's athletic events. His beloved with, Bernice Whitmore Fickes, whom he married March 4, 1950, preceded him in death on November 5, 2006.

He is survived by two  daughters, Deborah R. Reasner and husband Doug of Chambersburg, and Wanda J. Fickes at home; two grandchildren, Kiley R. Davidson and husband Bobby of Shippensburg and Travis R. Reasner and wife Jessica of Fayetteville; and three great-grandchildren, Elliana R., Liryn B., and Lundyn N. Reasner, all of Fayetteville. He is also survived by three sisters; Ilo Johnson and husband Eugene of Chambersburg, Darlene Hippenstill and husband Dave of Shippensburg, and Bonnie Carbaugh and husband Harry of Roxbury; and four brothers, Roger Fickes and wife Connie of Orrtanna, Larry Fickes and wife Bonnie of Fayetteville, Rick Fickes and wife Tina of Chambersburg, and Mike Fickes and wife Barb of Fayetteville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jay, Garnet, and Ted Fickes; and a sister, Penny Fickes.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. John Pogue will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00AM-1:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home.

Rosemary Maxine Rosenberry
September 28, 1941 - June 3, 2008
Rosemary Maxine Rosenberry, 66, of Marion, PA, died at 7:15 PM Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, PA, where she had resided since March. Born September 28, 1941 in Franklin County, PA, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Rosella Blubaugh Rosenberry. A 1959 graduate of Greencastle Antrim High School, she went on to graduate from the King's  daughters Hospital School of Nursing in Martinsburg. She was last employed by Berryville Graphics in Berryville, VA as a proofreader, retiring in 2004. Prior to working in Berryville, she had been employed as a registered nurse at West Virginia University Hospital. She had a life-long love of books and animals and enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by a brother, Ronald J. Rosenberry and wife Jean of Waynesboro, PA; a sister, Debora Rosenberry of Boyce, VA; a niece, Marybeth Rosenberry, and a nephew, Michael Rosenberry.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM Friday, June 6, 2008 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Interment will follow in Lincoln cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Delores M. "Dee" Buhrman
May 10, 1932 - December 14, 2009
Delores M. "Dee" Buhrman, age 77, of 2754 Warm Spring Road Chambersburg, PA, died on Monday, December 14, 2009 in her home. Born on May 10, 1932 in Hagerstown, MD, she was a daughter of the late Robert E. and Catherine M. Rife Smith.
A graduate of the former Hagerstown High School, Dee was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the Marion Volunteer Fire Company. She was an avid bingo player and loved to go bowling.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James A. Buhrman, whom she married on September 8, 1951; three children, James R. Buhrman, Robert J. Buhrman, and Lori A. Phenicie, all of Chambersburg; one sister, Beverly Oyler of Hagerstown; three grandchildren and one great grandson. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death a son, Timothy M. Buhrman; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Smith.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Saturday, December 19, 2009 in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Her memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, January 4, 2010 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church 320 Philadelphia Avenue Chambersburg, with Rev. James R. O'Brien officiating. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi cemetery.

Lester I. Walls
May 26, 1923 - December 20, 2008

Lester I. Walls, 85, of 5337 Race Track Road, St. Thomas, PA, died on Saturday, December 20, 2008 in Manor Care Health Services of Chambersburg. Born on May 26, 1923 in Spring Run, he was a son of the late Walter S. and Ella B. Johnson Walls.

Retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Lester also owned and operated his own salvage business for some time. He then worked until age 80 with his son, Gene, in the Lester E. Walls Excavating business of St. Thomas. When he wasn't working, Lester enjoyed hunting and going to auctions.

He is survived by his wife, Beryl Horn Walls; three sons, James L. (and wife, Julia) Walls, Lester E. "Gene" Walls (and wife, Kay), all of St. Thomas, and Ronald (and wife, Donna) Walls of Chambersburg; three  daughters, Fay (and husband, Crawford) Peters of St. Thomas, Janet Peterson of Lakeland, FL, and Nancy (and husband, Kevin) Berger of Dade City, FL; three brothers, Samuel Walls of St. Thomas, Glenn Walls of Fayetteville, and Carl Walls Sr. of St. Thomas; 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Walls, Esther Good, and Dorothy Everett; and five brothers, Norman, Clair Sr., Robert, Clarence and Wayne Walls.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Joseph Pickens and Rev. LeRoy Wiley will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the funeral home.

John R. Lehman, Jr.
March 22, 1931-November 16, 2008
John R. Lehman, Jr. 77, of Chambersburg, died on Sunday, November 16, 2008 in his home. Born on March 22, 1931 in Somerset County, he was a son of the late John R., Sr. and Ada Belle Umberger Lehman.

Mr. Lehman was a Tractor and Trailer driver, he was also a member of AMVETS Post 224, Landis-McCleaf Detatchment of the Marine Corps League, both of Chambersburg, PA, and American Legion post 612, St. Thomas, PA

He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Shirley J. Blair Lehman, whom he married on December 31, 1962; three children, Randy L (and wife, Sharon) Lehman of Chambersburg, Lorena S. (and husband, Darryl) Borger of Lehighton, PA, and Robert E. (and wife, Jackie) Lehman of Chambersburg; one brother, Donald Ringler, and one sister, Anna Grove, both of Denver, CO; and six grandchildren.

Services and interment will be private. Arrangements by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.

Leona Bell Hassler
Leona Bell Hassler, 87, of Menno-Haven, Chambersburg, formerly of 2293 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 15 at her residence.

Born Aug. 23, 1916 in Kauffman Station, Pa., she was the daughter of John D. and Susan M. Elliott Snyder. She was married to Thurman F. Hassler, who died on May 16, 2002.

Mrs. Hassler was a seamstress at the former Tracey Fashions, Chambersburg. She had been employed for over 20 years there before retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Open Door Church, Chambersburg, where she was one of the founding members. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling and hunting for Indian artifacts with her metal detector.

Surviving are two sons, Thurman D. Hassler of Ft. Loudon and Benjamin I. Hassler of Greencastle; a daughter, Bonny L. Poe of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Interment will be in Lincoln cemetery, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Stephen Golya Jr.
August 19, 1928 - June 1, 2008
Stephen Golya Jr., 79, of 81 Field Circle, Chambersburg, PA, died Sunday, June 1, 2008 in York Hospital. Born August 19, 1928 in Moosic, PA, he was a son of the late Stephen and Ann Potosky Golya. He served in the United States Air Force and was later employed with the United States Postal Service, retiring as Postmaster in Gettysburg, PA. Stephen was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg and numerous other civic organizations. An avid artist, he enjoyed painting with watercolors and was an active member of the Valley Art Association in Hagerstown, MD, the Studio Arts Club in Waynesboro, PA, and the Franklin County Art Alliance.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Bernice Lasak Golya, whom he married September 5, 1949, a son, Stephen Golya III and wife Nancy of Baltimore, MD, and five grandchildren; Kelly, Andrew, Austin, Katie, and Lauren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Marie Bennett in 1995, three sisters, and two brothers.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. James R. O'Brien at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Private interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church Parish Center.

Katherine “Kitty” Moore Ryder
July 19, 1913 - June 2, 2008
Katherine "Kitty" Moore Ryder, 94, a resident of Citizen's Care Center in Havre de Grace, MD and formerly of Fayetteville, PA, died Monday, June 2, 2008 in the nursing home. Born July 19, 1913 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Reese A. and Ada Freytag Moore. She graduated from high school in Chambersburg and was employed as a bookkeeper with Chambersburg Dairy for forty years. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Chambersburg. Her beloved husband, Harold Ryder, whom she married June 19, 1946, preceded her in death on October 24, 2000.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Edna Ryder, a brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Ryder, a nephew, Chester M. Moore and wife Karen, and two nieces, Dorothy Hruz and Linda Moore. Also surviving are two great-nieces, Kimberly Shew and husband George and Bethany Moore, a great-great niece, Kaylyn, a great-great nephew, Kyle, and a number of cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Taylor, and three brothers.

A graveside service will be held at Noon on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Norland cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. The Rev. Mark Woodring will officiate.

Harold E. Reichenbach
November 24, 1923 - November 18, 2008
Harold E. Reichenbach, 84, of 2242 Scotland Road, Chambersburg, died on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 in the Magnolias of Chambersburg, where he had been a patient since September 5, 2008. He received excellent care from the administration and staff at Magnolias. They are all such caring people. Harold fought a long battle with memory loss, congenative heart failure, and macular degeneration in both eyes.

Mr. Reichenbach was born November 24, 1923 in Sunbury, PA, son of the late Irvin E. and Mary Catherine Haas Reichenbach. Harold was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Chambersburg Club, Marine Corps League Landis McCleaf Detachment, VFW Post 1599, American Legion Post 46, and Fayetteville Fire Company. He belonged to Am Vets Post 224, and he was a former member of St. Thomas Legion Post 612 and its Last Man's Club. He was a former member of the Whirly Birds Square Dance Club, where he had served as treasurer for two years.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Reichenbach served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-45. A 1942 graduate of Sunbury High School, he was assistant manager of General Acceptance Corporation Offices in Sunbury and Scranton. He was the manager of the loan office in Chambersburg in 1954 and 1955. He opened the installment loan department in the Chambersburg Trust Company, now M&T Bank, in 1956. After retiring in 1979, he owned and operated Kay's Kitchen on South Main Street. He also sold specialty advertising for the Vernon Company of Newton, Iowa from 1980-2001.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lera G. Sanders Reichenbach on September 20, 1987. His wonderful Shelties, Heidi and Heather preceded him also. Harold loved dogs and cats, and they were always drawn to him.

Mr. Reichenbach is survived by his beloved wife and caregiver, Nancy McCormick Reichenbach, whom he married February 15, 1992 at Central Presbyterian Church. He is also survived by a daughter, Cathy R. Maloney (wife of Stephen G.) of Winchester, VA; two sons, Gregory A. (husband of Linda B.) of Chambersburg, and Scott H. (husband of Chris M.) of Fayetteville; a granddaughter, Shara S. (wife of Robert) Finley of Winchester; four grandsons, Aaron J. Reichenbach of Bell Gardens, CA, Ryan Smuro of Mechanicsburg, Kyle and Ty Reichenbach, both of Fayetteville; a great granddaughter, Olivia Williams of Winchester, and two great grandsons, Justin and Nathan Reichenbach, both of Bell Gardens, CA.

Harold and Nancy enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, square dancing, and concerts at the Capitol Theatre and Shippensburg University. He was known for his witty remarks, and he maintained that wit even to the last days of his life. He will be missed by Nancy, his family and his many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, November 21, 2008 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Matthew Richardson will officiate. Interment will follow in Norland cemetery, where members of Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and from 12-1 PM Friday.

Fern C. Kniseley
September 20, 1912 - December 6, 2008
Fern C. Kniseley, age 96, of 390 Ragged Edge Road, Chambersburg, and formerly of Pleasantville, Bedford County, PA, died on Saturday, December 6, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born September 20, 1912 in Dawson, Fayette County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Bertha Greist Colbert. Mrs. Kniseley was an honors graduate of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. She worked as a registered nurse alongside her husband, the late Dr. Joseph H. Kniseley, for twenty-seven years in his family medical practice in Bedford County. Joined in marriage since December 20, 1940, Dr. Kniseley preceded her in death on September 19, 1972.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Paris, PA. Since moving to Chambersburg she attended the First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, where she was a member of the Alda Bower Sunday School Class. Mrs. Kniseley was also a member of Martha Custis Chapter # 342 Order of Eastern Star, Chambersburg.

She is survived by three  daughters, Shari (Mrs. Allen) Ewing of Chambersburg, Deidra A. Kniseley of Connecticut, and JoAnnette (Mrs. Craig) Nelson, of Blenicia, CA, two granddaughters, Stephanie (Mrs. Robert) Byers, and Joelle (Mrs. John) Guare, both of Chambersburg, and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Abigail, Sarah, and Joseph. The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by two infant  daughters, five brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in the First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street, Chambersburg. The Rev. John J. Dromazos and Rev. Dianne B. Salter will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Interment will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 12 in Pleasantville cemetery

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Stephen D. Kish, Jr.
July 26, 1946-October 8, 2010
Stephen D. Kish, Jr., age 64, of Chambersburg, PA; passed away suddenly on October 8, 2010 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born July 26, 1946 in Roseville, CA, he was the son of the late Stephen D. Kish, Sr. and Margaret Hume Kish.

A US Navy veteran, Steve served his country honorably during Vietnam. He then pursued a career as a computer engineer, where he later retired from Letterkenny Army Depot. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599. Steve's hobbies included fishing, playing pool, cooking, cards, and his special and personal compassion for all things living, especially his cats.

Steve is survived by his wife of 41 years, Frances Altwegg Kish, whom he married on July 22, 1969; his children, Marisa Kish (husband Justin Heimberg) of Gaithersburg, MD and Alex Kish (wife Christine) of Chambersburg, PA; his grandson, Noah Kish and two brothers, Bob and Mike McAndrew.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 11 AM; where Rev. Fr. Keith Carroll will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the mass. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his honor to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202.

Alice Mae Horst
January 12, 1920 - June 3, 2008
Alice Mae Horst, 88, a resident of Menno Haven and formerly of 4994 Cumberland Highway, Chambersburg, died at 7:30 PM, Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in Menno Haven, where she resided for the past 2 ˝ years. Born January 12, 1920 in Shippensburg, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Alice Martin. Alice had attended the Rowe School near Pinola. A homemaker most of her life, she was a member of the Chambersburg Mennonite Church and was active with the church's sewing circle. She enjoyed crocheting. Her husband, H. Blaine Horst, whom she married August 31, 1940 preceded her in death on September 9, 1994.

Alice is survived by a three sons, Joel Blaine Horst and wife Judy, Jere Allen Horst and wife Doreen, and Vernon Daniel Horst and wife Luanne, a daughter, Virginia Mae Frey and husband Herbert, all of Chambersburg, thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Roy Martin Horst and Lynn Dale Horst. She was the last of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 8, 2008 in Chambersburg Mennonite Church, 1800 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Jerry Roth will officiate. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Friends may view one hour prior to the service in church on Sunday.

Edna I. McKenrick
Edna I. McKenrick, 91, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, formerly of 5500 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, died Oct. 26 at her residence.

Born Feb. 21, 1912 in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Florence A. Bohn Fickes. She was married to Raphael F. McKenrick, who died Aug. 21, 1967.

Mrs. McKenrick was a seamstress at the former Stanley Co., Chambersburg, before retiring. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg, where she was a member of its Columbian Ladies. She was also a member of Falling Spring Chapter No. 2840 AARP, Chambersburg. She attended the Franklin County Senior Center and enjoyed playing cards.

Mrs. McKenrick is survived by two  daughters, Irene F. Perry and Catherine F. Rosenberry, both of Chambersburg; two sons, Lloyd F. McKenrick of Scotland and James A. McKenrick of Fayetteville; a sister, Rhoda Lentz of Quincy; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two  daughters, Ethel C. Mummert on May 30, 1986 and Doris M. Hoover on April 8, 2001; as well as a brother Jesse Fickes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 with Re. James R. O’Brien officiating. Interment will be in St. Ignatius cemetery, Orrtanna.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 7-9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening in the funeral home.

L. Louise Hollar
October 13, 1917 - November 17, 2008
L. Louise Hollar, 91, of Chambersburg, died on Monday, November 17, 2008 in Menno Haven, Chambersburg. Born on October 13, 1917 in Williamson, PA, she was a daughter of the late Russell S. and Bessie J. Brumbaugh Barnes. She was the widow of J. Norman Hollar, who died on May 19, 1994.

A 1935 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Louise and her husband owned and operated their own business, Trends by Hollar, formerly on King Street in Chambersburg. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Chambersburg and she enjoyed volunteering her time and efforts with Chambersburg's community concerts.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Diane Hollar of Fairfax, VA; and two grandchildren, John Hollar of Fairfax Station, VA and Stephanie Hollar of Wilmington, NC. Her only brother, Lawrence Barnes, was killed in Italy during World War II.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 21, 2008 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with viewing one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Steven Dorsett will officiate. Interment will follow in Lincoln cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 North Progress Ave. Suite 205 Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the First Lutheran Church, 43 W. Washington Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
