Dr. George H. Milly
Dr. George H. Milly, 87, of Buckingham's Choice in Adamstown, died Thursday, Feb. 21. Scientist,
entrepreneur, and Knight of Saint Gregory, Dr. Milly was the founder of GEOMET Technologies, Inc.
He was the husband of Georgia L. Bywaters of Winchester, Va., whom he married 65 years ago and
with whom he raised six children.
Dr. Milly was born in Petersburg, Va. In 1940, he graduated magna cum laude in chemistry from
Niagara University. World War II halted his graduate study in chemistry at DePaul University. He
enlisted, studied meteorology at the University of Chicago, and was assigned as an Air Corps officer
to develop weapons-effects data for chemical weapons; before successful development of the atom
bomb, it was anticipated that chemicals might be used in the invasion of Japan. For his weapons
work, he was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon. His military service also included training of
Division Chemical Officers of the Army and the corresponding field grade officers of the Air Corps
and Navy. His service to the army continued as a civilian, eventually leading to his appointment as
director of the Edgewood Arsenal Operations Research Group, in which post he served until 1963.
After his service to the military, Dr. Milly vigorously continued to apply science in service to society.
He completed his doctorate in meteorology at the University of Michigan. He was the founder of
GEOMET Technologies, Inc., an environmental research, consulting, and services firm. He was
chairman and chief scientist of QUADREL Services, Inc., a research and minerals exploration firm.
Through his own geophysical research, he elucidated processes of earth breathing and applied these
insights to practical problems including non-intrusive assessment of buried environmental toxic
chemicals and mineral exploration.
Dr. Milly generously shared his talents and personal time with the Catholic church. As a longtime
member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Frederick, and more recently of St. Joseph-on-
Carrollton Manor in Adamstown, he frequently served as lector. He was an ardent supporter of
Catholic secondary education in Petersburg and established a perpetual scholarship fund at Niagara
University. He served as Eucharistic Minister to Catholic patients at Frederick Memorial Hospital until
his back pain made it necessary to discontinue the ministry he loved so much. He was a founding
member of the Board of Friends of Catholic Education and with his wife, Georgia, of the Associate
Board of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at Emmitsburg.
In recognition of his service to science and society, Niagara University awarded Dr. Milly its Caritas
Medal in 1980 and an honorary doctor of science degree in 1985.
In 2004, Dr. Milly was named to the Order of the Knights of Saint Gregory by Pope John Paul II, in
recognition of service to the Church, unusual labors, support of the Holy See, and the good example
set in communities and country.
Dr. Milly is survived by his wife, Georgia; four  daughters, Susan May Davenport of Charlotte, N.C.;
Mary Ann O'Shea of Merritt Island, Fla.; Dr. Deborah Joy Milly of Blacksburg, Va.; Carolyn Marie
Milly of Frederick; two sons, George Michael Milly of Thurmont; Dr. Paul Christopher Damian Milly of
Pennington, N.J.; nine grandchildren; a brother, John Joseph Milly of Panama City, Fla., and a
sister, Mary Gertrude Bennardo of Virginia Beach.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Keeney & Basford
Funeral Home in Frederick, with a recitation of the rosary beginning at 3:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will
be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 25, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Frederick, with interment
to follow at St. John's cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George S. and Florence Z. Milly Scholarship Fund
at Niagara University, c/o Alumni Office, Niagara University, NY 14109; to the St. Joseph-on-
Carrollton Manor Church building fund, P.O. Box 33, Buckeystown, MD 21717; or to St. John the
Evangelist Church, 112 East Second Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
