Betty J.S. Smith

BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT, Pa. - Betty J. Stahley Smith, 65, of 13066 Monterey Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Fairfield, Pa., she was the daughter of Laura E. Brooks Stahley, of Caledonia Manor in Fayetteville, Pa., and the late Roy G. Stahley.

She and her husband owned Dairy Queen in Waynesboro from 1982 to 1986. She and her husband owned Waynesboro Antique Market and Auction from 1988 to 1996. She was a professional cake decorator and baker.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Sabillasville, Md., and served on various committees of the church.

She enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Carroll C. Smith, whom she married May 15, 1949; three  daughters, Vanessa S. Findiesen of Annapolis, Carolyn Joy Smith of Quincy, Pa., and Mary M. Shindledecker of Blue Ridge Summit; one son, Rodger C. Smith of Waynesboro; four sisters, Ann Spertzel of Gardners, Pa., Jenna Belle Haines of Taneytown, Md., Guyda Shank of Carlisle, Pa., and Louise Woodring of Quincy; four brothers, Leroy S. Stahley of Westminster, Md., Fred Stahley of Blue Ridge Summit, Steve Stahley of Waynesboro and Wayne Stahley of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Jordan.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Sabillasville. Pastor John M. Grissinger and Pastor B. Joanne Gaver will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Drawer D, Sabillasville, Md. 21780.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Orpha R. Duvall

HOPEWELL, Pa. - Orpha Ruth Duvall, 94, of Route 1, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Pennknoll Village, R.D. 1, Everett, Pa.

Born Jan. 3, 1903, in Wells Tannery, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John L. and Eva Wink Duvall.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Riddlesburg Church.

She resided in the home of Vera Husick of Hopewell for 10 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Helen Castle of Portage, Pa.; two sisters, Isabelle Klose of San Jose, Calif., and Martha Murray of Tampa, Fla.; one granddaughter; one grandson; three great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Aramintha Barnett, Lillian Gundel, Freeda Gregory, Eleanor Anderson and Junia Hixson; and one brother, Herbert Duvall.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Jesse Musser will officiate. Burial will be in Wells Valley Methodist Cemetery in Wells Tannery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Floyd K. Moats

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Floyd K. "Bill" Moats, 65, of Route 2, Box 122, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg.

Born April 11, 1932, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Goldie Seburn Moats.

He was a mechanic for 44 years at Fulton Implement, McConnellsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Seiders Moats, whom he married May 10, 1952; two  daughters, Sondra K. Kitchen of Pittsburgh, and Brenda S. Moats of Philadelphia; one son, Roger Moats of McConnellsburg; three sisters, Dorothy Seiders of McConnellsburg, and Mary Younker and Della Seiders, both of Mercersburg, Pa.; one brother, Melvin Moats of Big Cove Tannery; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Foreman; and two brothers, Clyde Moats and Willis Moats.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home in McConnellsburg. The Rev. Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open Friday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Ada S. Eshleman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ada S. Eshleman, 86, of 135 Village Square Menno-Haven, and formerly of 130 N. Antrim Way, Greencastle, Pa., died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1911, near Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Maggie Shields Horst.

Her husband, Charles E. Eshleman, died on April 22, 1997. They were married Jan. 2, 1931.

She was a homemaker, and was owner of Sunnyway Diner in Greencastle from 1956 to 1969.

She was a member of Cedar Street Mennonite Church, Chambersburg.

She enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by two  daughters, Margaret L. Martin and Audrey J. Clopper, both of Greencastle; three brothers, Charles E. Eshleman Jr. of Chambersburg, and Donald E. Eshleman and Carl E. Eshleman, both of Greencastle; two brothers, Harold Horst of Altoona, Pa., and Robert Horst of Greencastle; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman Horst, Raymond Horst and Leroy Horst.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Street Mennonite Church, 430 Cedar St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Darrell Baer, the Rev. Aden Diller, and Vernon Eisner, chaplain, will officiate. Burial prior to the memorial service will be at the convenience of the family in Marion Mennonite Church Cemetery in Marion, Pa.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the building fund of Cedar Street Mennonite Church, c/o Dale Clugston, treasurer, 430 Cedar St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Joyce A.M. Brown

FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Joyce A. Moore Brown, 69, of 740 Harbaugh Valley Road, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born May 16, 1928, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Anna Murdorf Sites. She was the stepdaughter of the late Elmer T. Sites.

Her husband, Maurice G. Brown Sr., died in 1995. They were married Feb. 16, 1946.

She was employed as a packer for 30 years by Blue Ridge Pipe and Nipple Works, retiring in December 1992.

She was a member of Blue Ridge Sportsman Club, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

She is survived by three  daughters, Veronica "Vicky" Coleman of Blue Ridge Summit, Glenda M. Startzman and Andrea L. Brown, both of Fairfield; two sons, Maurice C. Brown Jr. of Fairfield, and Rodney L. Brown of Thurmont, Md.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will be in Jacob's Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Jean E.B. Stevens

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Jean E. Bumbaugh Stevens, 69, of 6474 Duffield Road, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Manor Care Health Services in Chambersburg.

Born March 4, 1928, in Pond Bank, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Edward and Emma Rhone Bumbaugh.

Early in life, she was employed at Mont Alto Nursery, and also did seasonal work for Musselman's.

She was a member of Pond Bank Independent Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary for a number of years, and was a member of Ladies Sunday School Class and Women's Missionary Council, where she served as treasurer for a number of years.

She is survived by three  daughters, June E. Cook of Fayetteville, Pa., Deanna L. Sanders of Chambersburg, and Christine M. Butts of Waynesboro; one son, D. Blaine Stevens of Fayetteville; two sisters, Betty L. Henry Hardsock and Janet L. Gilbert, both of Chambersburg; one brother, Rodney C. Bumbaugh of Chambersburg; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Alan E. Stevens; two sisters, Martha E. Stoops Black and Hazel I. Rock; one brother, Robert L. Bumbaugh; and an infant sister and brother.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Pond Bank Independent Church, 6704 White Rock Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Mervil R. Stambaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Master Sgt. Roger W. Kelley

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Retired Master Sgt. Roger W. "Opa" Kelley, 58, of 522 Green St., died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at Lock Haven Hospital in Lock Haven, Pa., as a result of an automobile accident on Pa. 120 near Renova, Pa.

Born Nov. 22, 1939, he was the son of Faye Summerson Kelley of Renovo and the late Archie S. Kelley. He spent his early life in Renovo.

He was a 1958 graduate of Renovo High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army following high school and served for 30 years. His basic training was completed at Fort Dix, N.J., and he served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam, retiring in 1988 at Fort Ritchie. At the time of his death, he was a civilian contractor, employed as a telecommunication specialist at Fort Ritchie.

He was a member of William Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post 695 in Waynesboro.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Edda B. Wittmann Kelley, whom he married June 30, 1961; one daughter, Tina K. Kelley of Waynesboro; three sons, Wayne R. Kelley, Michael J. Kelley and Eugene N. Kelley, all of Waynesboro; three sisters, Faith Anderson and Susan Moore of Renovo, and Sandy Perron of Houston; two brothers, Douglas Kelley and Archie Kelley, both of Renovo; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Grace Marie Stanley.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro. Military graveside services will be conducted by Honor Guard of Charles M. Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post 1599 in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Roger W. Kelley Memorial Fund, c/o Patriot Federal Credit, 800 Wayne Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Thelma S. Baker

NANTY GLO, Pa. - Thelma S. Baker, 90, of Nanty Glo, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at her home.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., July 18, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Samuel N. and Annie L. Sterling Crider.

Her husband, Guy L. "John" Baker, died in 1988.

She retired from Central Cambria School District in Cambria County, Pa., where she was a cook.

She was a charter member of Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church, and taught Sunday school for 60 years. She also was a member of Sweet Sixties of the church, and served in every position in the church and Sunday school over the years.

She is survived by one daughter, Gloria Snedden of Nanty Glo; one son, George S. Baker of Hagerstown; one sister, Catherine L. Crider of Nanty Glo; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, John L. Baker Jr.; and an infant son, Raymond Baker.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. James Brethren Church in St. James. The Rev. Brian Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Manor Church Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at Baker-Harris Funeral Chapel in Johnstown, Pa., today from 5 to 9 p.m.; and at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church Building Fund, William Penn Highway, Johnstown, Pa. 15909.
