Ray G. Keller

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Ray G. Keller, 88, of 219 North Allison St., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born May 16, 1909, in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Floyd and Verna Myers Keller.

He retired as a store room clerk from Western Maryland Railroad, in Hagerstown, after 45 years of service.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle.

He was a member of the Waynesboro Chapter of AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Vada A. Elliott Keller, whom he married in November 1929; two  daughters, Pearl E. Stockslager of Greencastle and Linda K. Valentine of Waynesboro; one son, Henry R. Keller of Chambersburg; two sisters, Hazel Myers of Greencastle and Louise Chamberlin of Waynesboro; two brothers, Clarence Keller and Ralph Keller, both of Greencastle; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; and four brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 South Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Donald L. McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 225 East King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Lutheran Social Services, 2735 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

John J. Thompson

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - John J. Thompson, 72, of 8221 Stonebridge Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 18, 1925, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late George Jacob and Mary Hull Thompson.

He attended the former Lemasters High School, Lemasters, Pa.

He was a farmer and former auctioneer. He last worked, for 16 years, as sealor of weights and measures for Franklin County, Pa.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Evelyn H. Statler Thompson; two  daughters, Sue A. Myers and Rita C. Bowman, both of Greencastle; one son, Jerry A. Thompson of Greencastle; two sisters, Miriam Rife and Dorothy Thompson, both of Greencastle; one brother, William Thompson of Mercersburg, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. David Armstrong and the Rev. Melvin Van Orman will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nellie F. Bell

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Nellie F. Bell, 67, of 11620 Bemisderfer Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at her home.

Born March 19, 1930, in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Alice Burkett St. Clair.

She was a homemaker.

She was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

She was a volunteer at Shady Grove Community Center, Shady Grove, Pa.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Edward F. Bell; three  daughters, Myra I. Kidd of Shady Grove, Edna Jane Cushing of Virginia Beach, Va., and Charlotte B. Elliott of Greencastle; one sister, Mary Stamper of Belton, Texas; three brothers, Tim St. Clair of Somerset, Pa., Tom Faushnacht of Vincennes, Ind., and Jack Burkett of Fort Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

She wished to have her body donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry of Pennsylvania for medical research at Hershey Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle. The Rev. David G. Rawley will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greater Philadelphia Area Chapter of ALS, P.O. Box 507, Norristown, Pa. 19404, Attention: Ellyn Phillips.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.

Charles W. Thomas

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Charles Wilbur "Big Web" Thomas, 67, of 1199 Black Gap Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Mount Union, Pa., he was the son of the late William Henry and Maude Mae Peck Thomas.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, where he worked as a mechanic in the artillery section, after 35 years of service.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Mount Union United Methodist Church, Fayetteville.

He was a member of Letterkenny Rod and Gun Club, Chambersburg; and South Mountain Fish and Game Club, South Mountain, Pa.

He is survived by one daughter, Kim C. Gilbert of Chambersburg; four sons, Dennis W. Thomas of Chambersburg, Charles M. Thomas, Randy W. Thomas and Christopher C. Thomas, all of Fayetteville; 11 sisters, Mary C. McCleaf of Hagerstown, L. Louise Orndorff of Gettysburg, Pa., A. Mae Reed, V. Ruth Juray and Marie A. Thomas, all of Chambersburg, Grace I. Heckman, Nancy R. Bumbaugh, Nellie S. Pensinger, Blanche E. Thomas and M. Joanne Thomas, all of Fayetteville and A. Kathaleen Spoonhour of Mont Alto, Pa.; five brothers, George L. Thomas of Akron, Ohio, Clarence R. Thomas, James L. Thomas and Frank C. Thomas, all of Fayetteville, and Edgar L. Thomas of Chambersburg; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Robert L. Basom and the Rev. George S. Mouer Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Union Cemetery, Fayetteville.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Mount Union United Methodist Church, c/o 7881 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, Pa. 17222.

Nelson I. Ommert

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Nelson I. Ommert, 90, of 13643 Molly Pitcher Highway, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 21, 1907, in Williamson, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Annie Etter Ommert.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Kershner Ommert, in 1953.

He retired, in 1974, after 25 years with Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, Pa., where he worked as a blacksmith and welder. He also operated a lawn mower business out of his home.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle.

He was a member of Greencastle Senior Men's Group; a life member of Rescue Hose Co. No. 1 of Greencastle; and a social member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion of Greencastle.

He is survived by one daughter, Alice Jean Hayward of Durham, N.C.; one son, Carroll R. Ommert of Staton Island, N.Y.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Donald McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

George L. Hepfer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George L. "Buzz" Hepfer, 60, of 1577 Streamside Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1937, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Frederick J. and Nettie F. Custer Hepfer.

He was a custodial worker for the Chambersburg School System, retiring in 1981.

He served as a private first class in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46 in Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Freda R. Craig Hepfer, whom he married June 11, 1977; two  daughters, Genice R. Hepfer and Georgia L. Hepfer, both of Chambersburg; five sisters, Florence Tice of St. Thomas, Pa., Rosie France of Carlisle, Pa., Ruth Welsgarber of Chambersburg, Violet Vanderau of Waynesboro, Pa., and Dorothy Kennedy of Shippensburg, Pa.; five brothers, Lester Hepfer of Waynesboro, Robert J. Hepfer, John Hepfer and Joseph Hepfer, all of Chambersburg, and Samuel Hepfer of Fawn Grove, Pa.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Pastor Lee Gehman will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg, with military graveside services conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Charles V. Barnhart

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Charles V. Barnhart, 83, of 120 Orchard Ave., died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, at University Hospital/Hershey Medical Center in Derry Township, Pa.

Born Oct. 30, 1914, in Ringgold, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Mabel J. Gardenhour Barnhart.

He was a retired owner and operator of restaurants in Hanover, Pa., and Chambersburg, Pa.

He was a social member of Marine Corps League, Hume, McNeal, Byers AMVETS Post 224 and Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46.

He is survived by two  daughters, Patricia Hampton of Fayetteville, Pa., and Cathy Chaney of Chambersburg; four sisters, Madeline Smiley, Thelma Hummer and Armatha Haugh, all of Waynesboro, Pa., and Betty Carbaugh of New Franklin, Pa.; one brother, Elwood Barnhart of Waynesboro; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, two sons, two sisters, and six brothers.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Chambersburg Hospital for Life Line Services, 112 N. 7th St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.
