Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Darwin B. Ford Sr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Darwin B. Ford Sr., 70, of 719 S. Church St., died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 25, 1928, in Salem, W.Va., he was the son of the late Carl W. and Bessie Kellar Ford.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He worked for 14 years at Waynesboro Shoe Factory until the factory closed in 1960. He then worked for 32 years for DeRose Industry in Chambersburg as a quality control supervisor, until his retirement in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Frances R. Peters Ford, whom he married Nov. 29, 1947; two  daughters, Sherry L. Sharrah and Linda S. Flook, both of Waynesboro; one son, Darwin B. "Pete" Ford Jr. of Waynesboro; two sisters, Ida Mae Benedum of Salem, W.Va., and Betty Rock of Grove City, Ohio; two brothers, James Ford of Fairfield, Pa., and the Rev. Daris Ford of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; and three brothers.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Daris Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Sunday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

C. May Adolini

MONT ALTO, Pa. - C. May Nunemaker Adolini, 70, of 224 Park St., died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born March 29, 1927, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of Ardella Strayer Nunemaker of Mont Alto and the late Oscar E. "Frick" Nunemaker.

She was a homemaker.

She had attended Wesley United Methodist Church, Mont Alto.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joseph P. Adolini; two sons, Tony L. Adolini of Mont Alto and Terry E. Adolini of Waynesboro; six sisters, Jean D. Beltz Morgan of Carlisle, Pa., Edith Jones and Betty Reed, both of Mont Alto, Mary J. Junkins of Gettysburg, Pa., Sally A. Peck of Waynesboro, and Nancy Showalter of Lancaster, Pa.; two brothers, Paul E. Nunemaker and William J. Nunemaker, both of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Emory Nunemaker, John Nunemaker and James Nunemaker.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Donald R. Moul will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mont Alto.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Wesley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 339, Mont Alto, Pa. 17237.

Mildred I. Starliper

QUINCY, Pa. - Mildred I. Chamberlain Starliper, 75, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 46 E. North St., Waynesboro, Pa., who died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy L. Hawbaker, in 1962.

Raymond R. Gift

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Raymond R. Gift, 81, of 3738 Mercersburg Road, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born March 30, 1916, in Markes, Pa., he was the son of the late William R. and Bessie E. Zimmerman Gift.

He was a graduate of the former Lemasters High School, Lemasters, Pa.

In his early life, he was employed by Lemasters Elevator. He was then employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, and retired in 1972.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Lemasters.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Socks Gift, whom he married on June 9, 1938. He was the last of his immediate family.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Lemasters. The Rev. Douglas N. Hodges will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

Visitation will be at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

Richard F. McCullough

ROMULUS, N.Y. - Richard F. McCullough, 72, of 2064 Cayuga, and formerly of Lemasters, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Seneca General Hospital, Seneca, N.Y.

Born Dec. 14, 1925, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Howard B. and Mary Anna Meyers McCullough.

He was a graduate of the former Lemasters High School.

He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. In 1966, he was transferred to Seneca Army Depot, Romulus, where he was an inspector. He retired in 1981.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater.

He attended Seneca Community Church of Romulus.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Keefer McCullough, whom he married on July 25, 1947; two  daughters, Teresa Brewer of Romulus and Cheryl Day of Rochester, N.Y.; one son, Gregory McCullough of Rochester; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Milton W. Benny Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

Norman R. Strait

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Norman R. Strait, 87, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Saluvia, Pa., Franklin County Nursing Home and Edwards Estate, Burnt Cabins, Pa., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at ManorCare Health Service, Chambersburg.

Born June 10, 1910, in Saluvia, he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Aretta E. Schooley Strait.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wande O'Hara Strait, in 1962.

He was a retired truck driver.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by one son, Norman J. Strait of Middletown, Md.; one sister, Winifred Lininger of St. Thomas, Pa.; one brother, Jacob Strait of Apple Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Harrisonville, Pa. Pastor Hull Byers will officiate. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and two hours prior to the service Wednesday.

Harold E. Hawbaker

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harold E. Hawbaker, 87, of 6959 Wayne Highway, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 14, 1910, in Dallas Center, Iowa, he was the son of the late Joseph K. and Mary Elizabeth Niswander Hawbaker.

He attended Locust Level School, near Welsh Run, Pa.

He was a farmer and fruit grower in the Quincy, Pa., area.

He was a member of Old German Baptist Church, Falling Spring District, Chambersburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Florence L. Hess Hawbaker, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1939; four  daughters, Phyllis Jean Boone and Geneva Rapp, both of Covington, Ohio, Lucille Yoder of Waynesboro, and Linda Brubaker of Delphi, Ind.; two sons, Paul Hawbaker and Carl Hawbaker, both of Waynesboro; one sister, Mildred Kramer of Chambersburg; three brothers, Wilbur Hawbaker of Mercersburg, Pa., Kenneth Hawbaker of Dallas Center, and John Hawbaker of Greencastle, Pa.; 29 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, David Hawbaker; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at noon at the Hawbaker Home, 6959 Wayne Highway, and then at 1 p.m. at the Old German Baptist Church, Falling Spring District, Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Home Brethren will officiate. Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the Hawbaker Home today from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Cora E. Oellig

NEW OXFORD, Pa. - Cora E. Oellig, 89, a resident of Cross Keys Brethren Home, and formerly of 239 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the home.

Born Nov. 1, 1908, in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late J. Brown and Alice Royer Oellig.

She was a 1927 graduate of Greencastle High School. She also was a graduate of Elizabethtown College and Juniata College. She attended Drexel Institute.

She was a school teacher for 35 years and taught in Lancaster County, Pa., Bedford County, Pa., and in Greencastle. She taught home economics at Greencastle High School from 1940 to 1952 and sixth grade from 1953 to 1967.

She was a life member of Greencastle Church of the Brethren, where she sang in the church choir. She was active in the Women's Fellowship and Ladies Sewing Circle.

She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Educators Association and AARP.

She is survived by one sister, Miriam O. Hackman of Cross Keys Brethren Home; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret E. Oellig and Ruby Oellig Wampler; and three brothers, Howard Oellig, J. Byron Oellig and Galen R. Oellig.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Greencastle Church of the Brethren, 36 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Robert Thacker will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Greencastle Church of the Brethren, 36 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225; or Cross Keys Brethren Home, P.O. Box 128, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, Pa. 17350.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

James P. Gordon

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - James P. Gordon, 58, of 640 Lincoln Way East, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg.

Born April 23, 1939, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of C. Kenneth Gordon of McConnellsburg and the late Lois Kendall Gordon.

He was a graduate of McConnellsburg High School, Chambersburg School of Business, Pennsylvania Bankers Association Trust Training School, American Bankers Association's National Graduate Trust School and American Bankers Association's Trust Management School. He was awarded the designation of Certified Trust and Financial Advisor by the Institute of Certified Bankers.

He joined Valley Bank division of Dauphin Deposit Bank and Trust Co. in 1967 and was vice president and trust investment officer.

He was a member of United Presbyterian Church, McConnellsburg.

He was a member of South Central Pennsylvania Estate Planning Council; life member, past president and 1967 Fireman of the Year of McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1; Firemen's Association State of Pennsylvania; Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association; Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association; member and past president of McConnellsburg Lions Club; past president of Great Cove Golf and Recreation Club; member of BPO Elks 600; Mount Zion Lodge 774 F.& A.M.; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Harrisburg, Pa.; Jaffa Temple Shrine, Altoona, Pa.; Bedford Royal Arch Chapter 255; Mason Dixon Chapter of Safari Club International; Coastal Conservation Association; Fulton County Pistol and Rifle Club; and Old Timers Hunting and Loafing Club.

He served one six-year term on Central Fulton School Board. He served on the board of the McConnellsburg Borough Municipal Authority since 1970.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by his wife, Mary A. Sipes Gordon, whom he married on March 22, 1958; two sons, Gregory P. Gordon of Wells Tannery, Pa., and Douglas C. Gordon of McConnellsburg; one brother, John K. Gordon of McConnellsburg; one grandson; and one stepgranddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandson.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church, McConnellsburg. Pastor Angela Hancock and Pastor Trent Hancock will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday, where a Masonic service will be conducted by Mount Zion Lodge 774 F.& A.M.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Home Care, Fulton County Medical Center, 216 S. First St., McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233; or the American Cancer Society, Fulton Unit, P.O. Box 674, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233.

Arrangements are by Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Harrisonville, Pa.
