Harry W. Mentzer Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harry W. Mentzer Jr., 83, of 215-B Elder Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born June 17, 1914, in Rouzerville, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry W. and Amanda Young Mentzer Sr.

He was employed in his early life at Famous Texas Lunch, Waynesboro. Prior to retiring in 1975, he was a clerk and produce manager at ACME Markets, Waynesboro for 40 years.

He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, Waynesboro; and Bible Sunday School. He taught Sunday school for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Ruth Myers Mentzer a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, whom he married Aug. 28, 1940; two  daughters, Carolynn M. Nau of Germantown, Md. and Victoria M. Jones of Waynesboro; one sister, Catherine Mentzer Taylor a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Carlee Victoria Johns, in 1997; one sister; and four brothers.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Dwan N. Newsome and the Rev. Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Pa.

There will be no public viewing; but the family will receive friends Friday one half hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Clarence E. Sheffield

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Clarence E. "Scratch" Sheffield, 69, a resident of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home, and formerly of Fort Littleton, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Sept. 14, 1928, in Shade Gap, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter and Adda Locke Sheffield.

He was a former laborer on road construction.

He is survived by one sister, Velma Allen of Shippensburg, Pa.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Norman Sheffield.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg, Pa. The Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Fair Ridge Cemetery, Shade Gap.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to McConnellsburg Assembly of God Church, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233.

Jack A.W. Campagno

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Jack A. White Campagno, 68, of 23 Newville Road, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Carlisle Hospital.

Born Aug. 8, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Kretzer White.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg.

He also was a member of Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223, and Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168, both in Shippensburg, and Disabled American Veterans.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War. He received the Bronze Star.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Frohm Campagno; one son, Joseph A. Campagno of Chambersburg; one sister, Rose Cunningham of Hagerstown; one brother, Kenneth White of Maugansville; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg. The Rev. Larry Sherdel will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg, with graveside military services conducted by Shippensburg VFW and American Legion posts.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of America, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 800 Corporate Circle, Harrisburg, Pa. 17101.

David C. Sollenberger

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - David C. Sollenberger, 86, a resident of Menno Haven, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Menno-Haven.

Born Nov. 12, 1911, in Hamilton Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Henry E. and Ethel Overcash Sollenberger.

He worked on the family farm in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pa., and made his home with his brothers and sisters.

He was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Chambersburg.

He attended Elder Day at Menno-Haven.

He is survived by two sisters, Anna E. Gochenauer and Martha M. Kuhns, both of Chambersburg; and five brothers, Chester H. Sollenberger of Hagerstown, Ira B. Sollenberger of Dillsburg, Pa., Harold B. Sollenberger, Menno B. Sollenberger and Samuel B. Sollenberger, all of Chambersburg.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Emma C. Sollenberger; and a brother, John B. Sollenberger.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Pleasant View Mennonite Church, 346 Warmspring Road, Chambersburg. Pastor Aldus M. Lehman, Pastor J. Allen Lehman, and Samuel J. Troyer, chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, today from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Pleasant View Mennonite Church, 346 Warmspring Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Charles S. Burger

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Charles Samuel Burger, 64, of 2463 Hoffman Road, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 20, 1933, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Alice Jett Burger.

He was employed by Mack Trucks, retiring after 19 years.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He attended Evangel Baptist Church, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Greencastle American Legion Post 373 and Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa. He was a member of UAW Local 171, and served several terms of union steward. He was a former member of Hagerstown Moose Lodge 212.

He is survived by his wife, Bette J. Burger; two  daughters, Lisa Kay Campbell of Ocala, Fla., and Tambra Jae Lewis of Greencastle; two sons, Charles Samuel Burger II of Glen Burnie, Md., and Brandon Charles Burger of Greencastle; one brother, Donald J. Burger of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastor Ernest Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Paul W. Defenderfer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Paul W. Defenderfer, 76, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, and formerly of 7525 Browns Mill Road, Chambersburg, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in the nursing home.

Born March 13, 1921, in St. Thomas Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Edith Foust Defenderfer.

He was employed as a shipping supervisor by the former Anvil Products, now Beck Manufacturing, of Greencastle, Pa. He retired in 1971.

He was a member of Fourth Street Church of the Brethren, Chambersburg.

He is survived by two sisters, Pearl Fisher of Upton, Pa., and Blanche Defenderfer of Lemasters, Pa.; two stepbrothers, Frank Heckman of New Oxford, Pa., and Roy Heckman of Chambersburg; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mabel A. Anderson, Ruth E. Finafrock and Grace V. Defenderfer.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Ken Gibble and the Rev. Donald Baker will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday 30 minutes prior to the service.

Merle I. Blubaugh

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Merle Ira Blubaugh, 90, of 414 Walnut St., died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 17, 1907, in Tomstown, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Mary Mentzer Blubaugh.

He was employed by Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, for 49 years as a machine operator, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695; Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1191; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15; Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758; Eagles Club; and Order of the Owls Nest 1073, all of Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene MaLinda Stoops Blubaugh, whom he married Jan. 13, 1951; four  daughters, Phylis Croson, Carolyn Harbaugh and LuAnn Hardman, all of Waynesboro, and Doris Ricker of Keedysville; four sisters, Mae Siecrist of Quincy, Pa., Mary Haugh and Anna Monn, both of Tomstown, and Hilda Brubaker of Waynesboro; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Noll and Marie Rosenberger; and three brothers, Jacob M. Blubaugh, Henry Blubaugh and Chauncey Blubaugh.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. James T. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Luther Home Services, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Antietam Human Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Donald R. Bain

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Donald Reed Bain, 71, of 9857 Huber Road; and formerly of Brindle Terrace, Mercersburg, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at his home.

Born March 30, 1926, in McConnellsburg, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Bessie Seiders Bain.

He had been a farmer and was retired from Grove Manufacturing.

He attended Clayton Memorial Church, Mercersburg.

He is survived by two  daughters, Donna Kipe of St. Thomas and Christina Fields of Centreville, Va.; one son, Dennis R. Bain of Mercersburg; one sister, Betty Lewis of McConnellsburg; two brothers, Carl Bain of McConnellsburg and Harry Bain of Warfordsburg, Pa.; five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Bain, in 1991.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg. The Rev. Kelly Shope will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home; and Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Andrea L. Gsell

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Andrea Lynn Gsell, 4-day-old infant daughter of Kandy J. Atherton and Dean L. Gsell, of 5 S. Main St., died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

She was born Feb. 23, 1998, in Chambersburg, Pa.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by maternal grandparents, Chester and Joane Atherton of Mercersburg; paternal grandparents, Teresa Messner of Mercersburg and Melvin Gsell of Greencastle, Pa.; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Atherton of Greencastle; paternal great-grandparents, H. Jacob and Grace Gsell of Mercersburg; maternal great-grandmother, Helen House of Elizabethtown, Pa.; maternal great-great-grandmother, Irene Coons of Shippensburg, Pa.; paternal great-great-grandparents, William and Shirley Bentz of Mercersburg; paternal great-great-grandmother, Nellie Geddes of Greencastle; paternal great-great-grandfather, Clyde Gsell of Quincy, Pa.; paternal great-great-great-grandfather, Roy "Hunboy" Robinson of Mercersburg; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, E. Seminary St., Mercersburg. The Rev. Stephen R. Robertson will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The viewing will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to her parents, 5 S. Main St., Apt. 7, Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa.
