Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Flo C. McCans

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Flo C. McCans, 77, of 3766 Edenville Road, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg.

Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late William and Ruby Shultz Kiser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. McCans, in 1988.

She retired in 1979 as a line manager from Duffy Motts in Aspers, Pa.

She formerly attended Christian Missionary Alliance Church and First United Methodist Church, both of Chambersburg; and Edenville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Rosenberry of Hustontown, Pa.; one son, Paul Erdman McCans of Elizabeth, Colo.; one sister, Verda Foreman of Edenville, Pa.; one brother, Robert Kiser of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Darla D. McCans; and a brother, Jack Kiser.

Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Dennis Chisholm will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no public viewing.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Building Fund of Christian Missionary Alliance Church, 500 S. 4th St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

H. Mae Hill

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - H. Mae Hill, 85, of 210 Brindle Drive, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, in Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Oct. 8, 1912, in Little Cove, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Newton and Laura Belle Gordon Phenicie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. "Spoe" Hill, in 1980.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of McConnellsburg, Pa.

She was a former member of Farm Women's Group 5 of Mercersburg.

She is survived by two  daughters, Betty M. Hill of Mercersburg and Yvonne "Bonnie" Mellott of Homosassa, Fla.; one son, C. Lee Hill of Mercersburg; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Henry K. Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Helen I. Keller

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Helen I. McKee Keller, 80, a former resident of 25 N. Potomac St., died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 9, 1917, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Grace Thompson McKee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Platt Jr., in 1961. They were married in 1939.

She was a graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg, Pa.

She was employed as an executive secretary for Penn Harris Hotel in Harrisburg for 10 years. She was then employed for eight years at Heritage Greeting Card Co., Waynesboro, retiring in 1982.

She is survived by one son, Terry L. Platt of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Earl "Tim" Platt III; and three sisters.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

George C. Cooke III

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George C. Cooke III, 76, of 1650 Clinton Ave., died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services.

Born Dec. 23, 1921, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late George C. and Jesse Palmer Cooke Jr.

He was a 1939 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Air Force.

In 1940, he joined Royal Canadian Air Force as a flying instructor on Prince Edward Island and Trenton, Ontario. Transferring to the U.S. Air Force in 1942, he was an instrument flying specialist; and helped develop the Army Air Force Instrument Flying Instructors School in Bryant, Texas. He was later sent to Empire Central Flying School in England. Discharged as a lieutenant colonel in 1945, he joined Eastern Airlines, where he flew as captain and chief check pilot for 30 years.

He was a member of Quiet Birdmen; Retired Eastern Pilots Association; and was a former golfing member of Chambersburg Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Pitman Cooke, whom he married June 23, 1941; one daughter, Constance Joyce Cooke of Durham, N.C.; two sons, George C. Cooke IV of Richland, Wash., and Stephen B. Cooke of Jaffrey, N.H.; four grandsons; nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by a half brother.

Burial will be private in Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Graveyard. The Rev. William H. Harter will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 298 Progress Ave., Harrisburg, Pa. 17109.

Charles K. DeShong

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Charles Kenneth DeShong, 80, of Needmore, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 25, 1918, in Pleasant Ridge, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel L. and Elsie Decker DeShong.

He was a pulpwood dealer; worked in construction; retired from Pennsylvania Turnpike; and was a car dealer for 40 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of VFW Post 655; and American Legion Post 561, McConnellsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel R. Dawson DeShong, whom he married May 25, 1941; two sons, Kenneth F. DeShong and Ronald C. DeShong, both of New Oxford, Pa.; one sister, Dora Truax of Pleasant Ridge, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter; three brothers; and four sisters.

Service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Joe Ritchey and the Rev. Bill Swope will officiate.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

George C. Rhodes

COATSVILLE, Pa. - George C. "Sarge" Rhodes, 73, a resident of Veterans Affairs Medical Center; and formerly of Kulpsville, Pa., Chambersburg, Pa., and McConnellsburg, Pa., died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1924, in Apple Grove, Ohio, he was the son of the late Garwin and Iva Castro Rhodes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Funk Rhodes, in 1987.

He retired as a guard from Franklin County Prison, Chambersburg.

Prior to working at the prison, he had served with the U.S. Army, retiring after 24 years of service.

He was a member of First Church of God, Chambersburg, where he had served as vice president of his Sunday School class.

He was active with senior centers in both Hagerstown and Chambersburg.

He is survived by one stepson, Ralph B. Brown of Kulpsville, Pa.; one grandson, Ashley V. Gladfelter of Chambersburg; one granddaughter, April M. Brown of Chambersburg; two stepgranddaughters, Lori A. Owens of Millersville, Pa., and Sherry L. Owens of Westchester, Pa.; one stepgrandson, Chad W. Owens of Kulpsville; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Services and burial will be private. The Rev. K. Hull Byers will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Chambersburg, 43 W. Washington St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Herbert P. Allen

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Herbert P. Allen, 84, of 2753 Esther Circle, Luther Ridge; and formerly of Rouzerville, Pa., died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Menno-Haven Nursing Home.

Born March 3, 1914, in Southampton Township, Pa., he was the son of the late John B. and Nan P. Staver Allen.

He was a 1932 graduate of Shippensburg High School.

For nearly all of his adult life, he was a retail grocer in the Waynesboro, Pa., and Rouzerville areas. Following his retirement, he had been employed as a bus driver for Waynesboro School district.

He was a life member of ATH&L Fire Co. of Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie I. Laughlin Allen; one daughter, Julia Ann Burner of Fayetteville, Pa.; one stepbrother, Lloyd F. Stamey of Pittsburgh; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; his stepmother; and one stepbrother.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 W. King St., Shippensburg. Dr. Francis H. Norton and the Rev. Vernon Isner will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

There will be no viewing; however, relatives and friends will be received by the family Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Lutheran Social Services, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Mary E. Reardon

QUINCY, Pa. - Mary E. Patterson Reardon, 84, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home; and formerly of 5308 Buchanan Trail East, Waynesboro, Pa., died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born March 6, 1914, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Barry and Minnie Cordell Patterson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Reardon, whom she married Dec. 15, 1950.

She was employed in her early life at Hagerstown Shoe Factory; and then Waynesboro Shoe Factory. Prior to retiring in 1985, she was a machine operator at Connie's Sportswear, Waynesboro.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a member of Mechanics SFE & Hose Co. 1 Ladies Auxiliary, Waynesboro.

She is survived by one daughter, Truela K. Izer of Waynesboro; two sisters, Margaret Sheffler of Chambersburg, Pa., and Ethel Emory of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; one brother, Raymond Patterson of Kinston, N.C.; two granddaughters; two great-grandsons; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Downin; and three brothers, Herman Patterson, Edward Patterson and Charles Patterson.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Michael V. Newman will officiate; and David Besecker will be the soloist. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

There will be no public viewing.
