Mark D. Hykes

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Mark D. Hykes, 34, of 11112 Welsh Run Road, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, as the result of an automobile accident in Antrim Township, Pa.

Born Aug. 24, 1963, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Donald M. and Carolyn Hafer Hykes of Greencastle.

He was a 1981 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School, where he was valedictorian of his class. He attended Hagerstown Junior College.

He was employed for more than 10 years as an electronics technician at Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro. He formerly worked at H.M.W. in Waynesboro, Pa.

He was a charter member of Grace Bible Church of Greencastle. He served as Sunday school treasurer and was a head usher of the church.

He played softball for the church's softball team. He was a member of the National Rifle Assocation and enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation and was a regular donor to the local bloodmobile. He also was a former Boy Scout with State Line Boy Scout Troop.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of six years, Jennifer L. Baker Hykes; one son, Noah Aaron Hykes, at home; two brothers, Timothy W. Hykes and Steven L. Hykes, both of Greencastle; one niece; five nephews; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grace Bible Church, 2327 Hoffman Road in Greencastle. The Rev. J. Herman Fisler will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. in Greencastle, and Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Noah Aaron Hykes Care Fund, in care of Citizens National Bank, P.O. Box 400, 35 North Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Rhoda V.C. Barnes

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Rhoda V. Carbaugh Barnes, 88, a resident of Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and formerly of South Mountain, Pa., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1909, in South Mountain, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Ida Barber Carbaugh.

Her husband, Clyde A. Barnes, died on Jan. 28. They were married Dec. 29, 1925.

She was employed at Samuel G. Dixon State Hospital, now South Mountain Restoration Center, from June 1945 to December 1971 as a diabetic cook.

She was a member of South Mountain Bible Church.

She is survived by three  daughters, Della E. Kipiel of Fayetteville, Eva D. Wagaman of South Mountain, and Verna Y. Sloat of Biglerville, Pa.; one son, Donald A. Barnes of South Mountain; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna M. Baker; one son, Harold W. Barnes; two sisters, Glovia Kauffman and Neoma Cromwell; three brothers, Clyde Carbaugh, Robye Carbaugh, and Orlo Carbaugh; and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. David L. Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery in South Mountain.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Jerry S. Davis

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Services for Jerry S. Davis, 49, of 630 Lincoln Way East, who died Saturday, April 18, 1998, have been changed to Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Woodrow L. Mowen

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Woodrow L. "Woody" Mowen, 84, of 832 S. Church St., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1913, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Provard Mowen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel A. Peters Mowen, in 1989.

He was a caretaker at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro from 1934 until his retirement in 1988.

He attended Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jean Welsh of Waynesboro; one sister, Arlene Niedenthol of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara A. Ellio; three sisters; 15 brothers; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. H. Ray Kipe will officiate. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Janet V. Johnson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Janet V. Johnson, 77, of ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1920, in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Annie Snider Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Johnson, in 1978.

She was a graduate of Greencastle High School.

She had retired from the former Fairchild Aircraft Co., Hagerstown.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

She had attended the Greencastle Senior Citizen Center and worked with ceramics. She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Lyman Elliott, and a sister, Vada Keller.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The Rev. David Armstrong will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Robert S. Seylar

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert S. Seylar, 72, of 4319 Scotland Main St., died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 21, 1925, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late H. Stanley and Ruth Ommert Seylar.

He was the owner and operator of Robert S. Seylar Ditch Digging and Grading for 32 years, retiring in 1992.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church near Chambersburg and Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

He was a member of Cumberland Valley Antique Engine & Machinery Association Inc. and Vintage Chevrolet Club of America Inc.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty E. Elliott Seylar; two  daughters, Patricia Jane Seylar and Sally Clewell, both of Camp Hill, Pa.; one son, Brian Robert Seylar of Chambersburg; two sisters, Mildred Sweigert of St. Thomas, Pa., and Grace Gearhart of Shady Grove, Pa.; two brothers, Jay L. Seylar of Greencastle, Pa., and Ralph E. Seylar of Chambersburg; and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Mark A. Hagy and the Rev. David Kraft will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service.

Robert L. Mellott

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Robert Lee Mellott, 69, of McConnellsburg, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 12, 1928, in Hustontown, Pa., he was the son of the late Frank D. and Anna M. Wright Mellott.

He is a former member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alma L. Stains Mellott; two  daughters, Doreen Smith of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Diane Dunn of Greenville, Texas; six sons, Edwin Mellott of Laurel, Md., and Gale Mellott, Lindsay Mellott, Duane Mellott, Barry Mellott and Ronald Mellott, all of McConnellsburg; three sisters, Gladys Coble of East Haven, Vt., Grace Sipes of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Ada Schooley of Beaver Falls, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sideling Hill Christian Church, Needmore, Pa. The Rev. David Carroll will officiate. Burial will be in Siloam United Methodist Church Cemetery, Harrisonville, Pa.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Melva E. Hillis

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Melva E. Hillis, 83, formerly of 221 Hade Road, St. Thomas, Pa., died Sunday, April 19, 1998, in Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, where she had been a resident of the Extended Care Unit for the past five years.

Born Dec. 19, 1914, in Cove Gap, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ernest L. and Ester Kuhn Sipes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart J. Hillis, in 1994.

She was a former employee of Sagner Manufacturing of McConnellsburg. She was last employed by Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. She retired in 1977 after 20 years.

She was of Protestant faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Helen T. Brant of Mercersburg, Pa.; one son, Roy M. Summers of York Springs, Pa.; four sisters, Hylda A. Everets of Greencastle, Pa., Beulah Jones of Portland, Ore., Mabel M. Jones and Lou I. Ramsey, both of McConnellsburg; three brothers, Ralph L. Sipes of Titusville, Fla., Clarence J. Sipes of Memphis, Tenn., and Lawrence D. Sipes of McConnellsburg; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Belvy C. White will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Viewing will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Janet C. Stenger

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Janet C. Stenger, 74, of Route 2, Box 614, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg.

Born May 31, 1923, in McConnellsburg, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Bessie Spidel Clevenger.

She was a member of McConnellsburg class of 1941.

She was employed by Sagner Clothing Manufacturer and later by the American Legion.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, McConnellsburg.

She was a member of the McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co. auxiliary, the American Legion auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star, McConnellsburg.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, George W. Stenger; one daughter, Linda J. Blosser of Etters, Pa.; one son, Edward Stenger of McConnellsburg; three sisters, Catherine Bivens of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Carolyn Glenn and Peggy Headley, both of McConnellsburg; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jacob Clevenger Jr.

A service was held Monday, April 20, at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg. The Rev. Herbert Spomer officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery.
