Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

H. Amanda Barnhart

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - H. Amanda Barnhart, 89, a resident of Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg, and formerly of 4380 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at the nursing center.

Born March 7, 1909, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Catherine Rebecca Linganfelter Barnhart.

She attended Greencastle High School.

She worked from her home for more than 50 years as a seamstress, making draperies and slipcovers.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle. She attended and was a former teacher at Clay Hill Sunday School, Clay Hill, Pa.

She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy B. Harbaugh of Greencastle; and two granddaughters, Nancy H. Lyter of Middletown, Pa., and Cynthia H. Myers of Marion, Pa.; two great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. David Armstrong will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa.

There will be no public viewing.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Building Fund of First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Janice J. Wadding

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Janice J. "Jan" Wadding, 64, of HCR 75, Box 86, and formerly of Decatur, Texas, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 23, 1933, in Decatur, she was the daughter of Julia C. Bella Jones of Texas and the late Darrol Jones.

She was a graduate of Decatur High School.

She was a secretary in a car dealership.

She was a member of McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church.

She also was a member of McConnellsburg Women's Club, Fulton County Literacy Council, North End Garden Club of McConnellsburg and McConnell Park Committee. She was a lady greeter at Jaffa Temple in Altoona and volunteered at Fulton County Library.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Frank L. Wadding, whom she married in September 1972; three  daughters, Katherine McClure of Blanco, Texas, Rebecca Norris of Keller, Texas, and Mary Beth Bach of San Diego; one son, Bernard G. McClure; and two brothers, Fred Jones of Decatur, and John Paul Jones of Fort Worth, Texas.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Trent Hancock and the Rev. Angela Hancock will officiate.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the memorial service.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.

Ivan Slothour

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ivan Slothour, infant son of Trafford Wayne and Julie Ann Landes Slothour of 4947 Swope Road, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Quentin Slothour, Conner Slothour and Roy Slothour, all at home; paternal grandparents, Donald and Margaret Slothour of Chambersburg; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Slothour of Chambersburg, paternal great-grandparents, Abram and Elizabeth Hess of Waynesboro; maternal grandmother, Barbara Landes of Ohio; maternal grandfather, Duane Landes of Ohio; maternal great-grandparents, Alva and Pauline Landes of Covington, Ohio, and Jack and Mary Lou Williams of Wiggins, Miss.; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Elsie Fisher of Covington, Ohio.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, Pa.

Frances B. Wagaman

QUINCY, Pa. - Frances B. Slavinsky Wagaman, 86, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Verdier Street, Mont Alto, Pa., died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at the home.

Born March 12, 1912, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles D. and Cecelia A. Matikonis Slavinsky.

Her husband, Bennett H. "Ben" Wagaman, died in 1967. They were married April 7, 1931.

She was a 1929 graduate of Quincy High School.

She and her husband lived in Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina and Kentucky during her husband's military career.

She was employed in food service at South Mountain Restoration Center, Knouse Foods for 13 years, and Penn State University in Mont Alto, Pa.

She was a former member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 Auxiliary, Eagles Club Inc. Auxiliary, and Loyal Order of Moose Auxiliary, all in Waynesboro.

She is survived by three nieces, Cecilia Rados of Harrisburg, Pa., Frances Kurkendoll of Northwest, Okla., and Betty Lou Davis of Middletown, Pa.; and five nephews, Stephen Paul Kekich of Duluth, Minn., Charles Kekich of Tallahassee, Fla., Theodore Kekich of Steelton, Pa., Kenneth Wagaman, and William Wagaman of Camp Hill, Pa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hemler as celebrant. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Ida S. Mason

PITTSBURGH - Ida Statti Mason, of Pittsburgh, and formerly of Charles Town, W.Va., died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in Pittsburgh.

Her husband, James Murray Mason III, died in 1963.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

She is the last of her immediate family and is survived by nine nieces and nephews, and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances S. Nesta and Rose S. Tarasi; and two brothers, Dr. Louis W. Statti and Dr. Albert S. Statti.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Zion Episcopal Church Yard Cemetery in Charles Town. The Rev. John Bower will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Local arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town.

Melvin G. Eshelman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Melvin G. "Red" Eshelman, 86, of 201 Franklin Farm Lane, formerly of 2027 Warm Spring Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born June 25, 1911, in Hamilton Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Verba Eshelman Davis.

He was employed at McCleary Oil Co. Inc. as a gas station attendant for 56 years.

He was a member of St. James United Brethren Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Beverly J. Graham of Shippensburg, Pa.; two sons, M. Edward Eshelman of Chambersburg and Byron L. Eshelman of Greencastle, Pa.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. K. Hull Byers will officiate. Burial will be in Cashtown Cemetery, Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. James United Brethren Church, 2404 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Joanna G. Crider

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Joanna G. Crider, 62, of 1442 Brechbill Road, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at home following a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1935, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Ray M. and Reba I. Cooper Piper.

She was a 1954 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

She was a homemaker. She also had worked five years for John Wenger Insurance Co., 20 years as an independent driver of Chambersburg area school children and 15 years as an Avon representative.

She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, Chambersburg, and of New Life Sunday School Class.

She enjoyed crocheting, visiting with friends and being a grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, John E. Crider, whom she married June 27, 1958; two  daughters, Lori D. White and Stacie J. Guyer, both of Chambersburg; one son, Gregory S. Crider of Chambersburg; one sister, Juanita May Roosa of Perris, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens Chambersburg.

Viewing will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, P.O. Box 779, Minneapolis, Minn. 55440.

James W. Ehrhart

ORRSTOWN, Pa. - James W. Ehrhart, 67, of 10623 Newburg Road, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his home.

Born March 26, 1931, in St. Thomas, Pa., he was the son of the late George L. and Vallie M. Snurr Ehrhart.

He was retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Korean War.

He attended the Church of God, Newburg, Pa.

He is survived by two  daughters, Carol M. Eckenrode of Orrstown and Sylvia R. Hykes of Chambersburg; three sons, Eric R. Ehrhart of St. Thomas and Quintin J. Ehrhart and Chris S. Ehrhart, both of Orrstown; five sisters, Mary Helen Burkholder of Waynesboro, Pa., Ella Graham of Mercersburg, Pa., Bernidena Etter of Nyesville, Pa., V. Evelyn Wingert of Chambersburg and Marcina Wright of Upper Strasburg; four brothers, Grayson A. Ehrhart of Chambersburg, Robert O. Ehrhart of Orrstown, George C. W. Ehrhart and Dana O. Ehrhart, both of Upper Strasburg; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc. 112 W. King St., Shippensburg, Pa. Charles E. Beltz will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township, Pa.

Viewing will be Wednesday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

James L. Mowen

UPPER STRASBURG, Pa. - James L. Mowen, 53, of 10408 Mountain Road, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at University Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

He was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Born July 25, 1944, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late James E. and Edna Thomas Mowen.

He had worked at Franklin Clothing Co., Shippensburg, Pa. Before that, he worked at the former J. Schoeneman Co. in Chambersburg for 32 years.

He is survived by his wife, Jo K. Leisher Mowen; one daughter, Tammy M. Mowen, at home; one son, Brian K. Mowen of Orrstown, Pa.; four sisters, Shirley Smith of Milford, Del., Nancy Foor of Everett, Pa., Ruth M. Stevens and Betty Carbaugh, both of Greencastle; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 W. King St., Shippensburg. The Rev. Earl F. Barrick will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township, Pa.

Viewing will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of America, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 800 Corporate Circle, Harrisburg, Pa. 17101.
