John F. Baker

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - John Findlay "Fin" Baker, 63, of 302 Strickler Ave., died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1934, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Roy H. and Annie Minerva Peters Baker.

He was a 1952 graduate of Waynesboro High School. He attended the Mont Alto campus of Pennsylvania State University.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1974 with the rank of technical sergeant.

After his military service, he was employed at Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro. Before retiring in 1984, he worked in the methods department. He then worked as a security guard at Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro. He was last employed at the commissary at Fort Ritchie.

He was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ, Ringgold, where he served as a deacon. He also had served as secretary on the church board.

He was a member of BPOE Lodge 731, Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 and Order of the Owls Nest 1073, all of Waynesboro; TREA; Avid Model Builders; and National AARP. He enjoyed building models.

He is survived by his wife, R. Yvonne Barlup Baker, whom he married May 8, 1976; a stepdaughter, Michele Y. Rissler of Hagerstown; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ, 14426 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown. The Revs. Donald E. Conley and Bryan R. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Memorial donations may be made to Ringgold Church of Christ, 14426 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Dolores F. Morrison

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. - Dolores F. Morrison, 68, of New Cumberland and formerly of Allentown, Pa., died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Pa.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Francis H. Mahoney and Viola May Thornton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Morrison.

She was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She was a former employee of Salisbury School District, Allentown.

She was a member and former Board Member of West Shore Senior Citizens; and a former Republican Committee Lady, Allentown.

She is survived by two  daughters, Carlette A. Morrison, of Carlisle, Pa., and Jeanette L. Delaney, of City Island, N.Y.; one sister, Evelyn Easterday, of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Musselman Funeral Home, Inc., Lemoyne, Pa. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, Capital Region Division, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, Pa. 17043.

Rella V. Hershey

WATERFALL, Pa. - Rella Victoria Hershey, 94, of RD 1, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Extended Care Unit, Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 4, 1903, in Saluvia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Abby Hess Moore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva W. Hershey, in 1991.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Mount Tabor Nazarene Church, Waterfall. She attended Evangel Assembly of God Church, McConnellsburg.

She is survived by three sons, Harold E. Hershey of Harrisonville, Kenneth D. Hershey of Chambersburg, Pa., and Gerald M. Hershey of Mercersburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Harrisonville. Pastor Belvy White and Pastor Roy Brake will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Tabor Nazarene Cemetery, Waterfall, Pa.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dayna C. Shoop

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Dayna Carrie Shoop, 9 days old, of 3072 Cook Road, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at University Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Derry Township, Pa.

Born July 15, 1998, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Gary A. and Karen S. Panar Shoop of Fayetteville.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Kyle P. Shoop, at home; maternal grandparents, Francis and Lois Panar of Barnesboro, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Shirley M. Shoop of Chambersburg, Pa.; paternal grandfather, Donald A. Shoop of Chambersburg; and paternal great-grandfather, Oliver G. Fahnestock of Chambersburg.

Private graveside services will be today at Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., Chambersburg.

Carl D. Mills

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Carl D. "Fuzzy" Mills, 62, of 5654 Oakwood Drive, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 29, 1935, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Bruce H. and Gladys Deshong Mills.

He retired from Warren Electric Co. of Myersville, Md., in 1997, where he worked for 30 years as an electrician. He had previously been an employee of the former Southern Cross Manufacturing Co. of Mercersburg.

He was a member of Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1790, both of Mercersburg; a member of Wesley Yeager American Legion Post 606 of Fort Loudon, Pa., American Legion Post 561 of McConnellsburg, Pa., and Eagles Club 516 of Renova, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Kendall Mills, whom he married on June 30, 1956; one daughter, Teresa J. Hawbaker of Greencastle, Pa.; three sons, Gary L. Mills of Greencastle, Jeffrey S. Mills of Chambersburg, and Robin K. Mills of Mercersburg; one sister, Dorcas Sheffield of Mercersburg; one brother, Donald J. Mills of Mercersburg; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Assembly of God Church, 173 Rhondel Drive, St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Alvin J. Hezlep will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, and Wednesday one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Franklin Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Helen G. Friese

SEBRING, Fla. - Helen G. Friese, 73, of 305 Eagle Ave., and formerly of Lemasters and Mercersburg, Pa., died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, Sebring.

Born July 1, 1925, in Markes, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. Gift Sr. and Edna Lemaster Gift.

For 30 years, she assisted her husband in the operation of Garnet G. Friese School Bus Transportation. Following the sale of the operation to their son, the Frieses retired and moved to Florida in 1988.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Lemasters. She was the church organist for more than 25 years.

She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries for St. Thomas American Legion Post 612, American Ex-Prisoners of War Department of Florida, Florida Highlands Chapter and National Association of American Ex-Prisoners of War.

She is survived by her husband, Garnet G. Friese, whom she married on April 21, 1946; two  daughters, Shirley A. Miles of Mercersburg and Betty Jane Mouse of Fort Loudon, Pa.; one son, Robert E. Friese of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Thomas C. Gift Jr. of Mercersburg; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Lemasters. The Rev. Douglas N. Hodges and the Rev. Harry Ray will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

Visitation will be at the church Thursday one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Lemasters, P.O. Box 105, Lemasters, Pa. 17231.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg.

Mary H. Burger

MANCHESTER, Conn. - Mary Harriet Burger, 88, a resident of Arbors Retirement Community, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, July 24, 1998.

Born in Hanover, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Edna Haines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John R.M. Burger Jr.

She was a graduate of Garfield Memorial Nursing School.

She served as a U.S. Army nurse in France and England during World War II.

She worked for several years at Washington County Hospital and later did volunteer work there.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by one daughter, Harriet B. Griffith of Norwich, Conn.; and one grandson, Nikolas J. Griffith of Seattle.

A memorial service will be held in Manchester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Helen G. Hawbecker

QUINCY, Pa. - Helen Gordon Hawbecker, 91, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 315 Harrison Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at the home.

Born Feb. 4, 1907, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Norman B. and Grace Eberly Gordon.

Her husband, Earl W. Hawbecker, died in 1993. They were married August 1945.

She was a 1923 graduate of Waynesboro High School. She received a teaching certificate from Shippensburg Normal School and a bachelor's degree from Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1941.

She taught at elementary schools in Monterey, Zullinger, and Waynesboro in the Waynesboro School District for 44 years, retiring in 1969.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, and the Adult Bible Class.

She also was a member of the national, state and county Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by one sister, Hilda I. Gordon of Waynesboro; one nephew; and one grandniece.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Jay E. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 6 W. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.
