Clarence D. Smith

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Clarence D. "Smitty" Smith, 70, of 8113 Tomstown Road, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.

Born Aug. 27, 1927, in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Harvey G. and Bertha L. Scott Smith.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed by Teledyne Landis Machine Co. in Waynesboro for 45 years, last working as a purchasing agent. He retired Jan. 1, 1991.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy, where he served in all areas within the church, including as financial secretary.

He also was a member of Acacia Lodge 586 F.&A.M. in Waynesboro, serving as master since 1970; and was a member of Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple in Harrisburg, Pa., B.P.O. Elks Lodge 731 in Waynesboro, and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Freet Smith, whom he married June 17, 1950; one son, Matthew D. Smith of Boiling Springs, Pa.; one brother, Kenneth G. Smith of Shippensburg; and two nieces.

Services will be today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy. The Rev. Suzanne P. Perez will officiate. Burial will be in Quincy Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 176, Quincy, Pa. 17247.

Mary J. King

BIGLERVILLE, Pa. - Mary J. King, 43, of 1471 Quaker Valley Road, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Gettysburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born March 26, 1955, in Pompano Beach, Fla., she was the daughter of Coy and Mary A. King Sr. of Biglerville.

She was a 1972 graduate of Biglerville High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Baptist.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two  daughters, Pamela M. King and Tamara N. King, both of Chambersburg, Pa.; a son, Maurice S. King of Chambersburg; two sisters, Veronica King and Donna King, both of Biglerville; four brothers, Virgil King of Gettysburg, Christopher King of Biglerville, and Roderick King and Coy King Jr., both of Harrisburg, Pa.; three grandchildren; and her fiance, Henry Brown of York, Pa.

Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. W. Larry Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rosalie R. Brookens

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Rosalie R. Brookens, 93, of 235 Ritchey Road, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Jan. 8, 1905, in Scotland, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Elsie E. Miller Geyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon R. Brookens, in 1994.

She was a homemaker. She and her husband operated a poultry business and sold eggs for many years.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fayetteville.

For many years she and her husband helped with fund-raisers for Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co.

She is survived by a daughter, Romaine F. Martin of Fayetteville; two sons, Ray F. Brookens and Dwain W. Brookens, both of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Treva Hay.

Services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. David L. Hefner will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing.

The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 44 E. Main St., Fayetteville, Pa. 17222.

Anna M. Barnhart

QUINCY, Pa. - Anna Mildred Boward Barnhart, 90, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 201 Hamilton Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the home.

Born May 12, 1908, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Annie Angle Boward.

Her husband, Ralph Wishard Barnhart, died in 1990. They were married June 19, 1934.

She graduated from Clear Spring High School and Frostburg State Normal School.

She was a teacher in the Washington County School District. She also was a substitute teacher in the Waynesboro Area School District. In 1967, she started Trinity United Church of Christ Nursery School. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Waynesboro and the 3-M Sunday School Class.

She is survived by a daughter, Camilla Ann McAninch of Waynesboro; and a sister, Camilla Angle Boward of Hagerstown.

Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor James T. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 30 W. North St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arria L. Alter

LEMASTERS, Pa. - Arria L. Alter, 78, of 4844 Steele Ave., died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Nov. 18, 1919, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Clifford K. and Helen Staley White.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee M. Alter, in 1995.

She had been employed by the former Stanley Co. of Chambersburg. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Calvary Bible Church of Greencastle, Pa.

She is survived by a son, Michael L. Alter of Lemasters; a sister, Kathleen Grosh of Quincy, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Lisa Alter of Mercersburg, Pa., and James Alter of Lemasters.

She was preceded in death by a son, Edwin R. Alter; and a brother, Clifford K. White Jr.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Glen A. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

The viewing will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert E. Lowry

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Robert E. Lowry, 70, of McConnellsburg, died Monday, July 27, 1998, in New Buffalo, Pa.

Born March 2, 1928, in Monessen, Pa., he was the son of the late Hortensius and Bessie C. Miller Lowry.

He was a 1950 graduate of Juniata College.

He worked in car sales, most recently as president of Ryzer Pontiac and GMC in Halifax, Pa.

He was a member of McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of Woodbury Masonic Lodge in Roaring Springs, Pa., and a former member and one-term president of the board of Fulton County Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Beard Lowry, whom he married Sept. 10, 1950; two  daughters, Susan M. Hare of Wallingford, Pa., and Sharon K. Lally of Webster, N.Y.; a son, Cameron Lee Lowry of McConnellsburg; a sister, Mary Jean Hershberger of Quincy Home, Quincy, Pa.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Trent Hancock and Angela Hancock will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Westminster, Md.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Fulton County Medical Center, South First Street, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233.

Vernon R. Farrow

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Vernon R. Farrow, 67, of McConnellsburg and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Monday, July 27, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 6, 1931, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Carl and Margaret Bowers Farrow.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rebecca J. Wincer Farrow.

He had been employed for more than 20 years as a welder at Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, Pa.

He is survived by his son, Ernest L. Farrow of Lancaster, S.C.; two sisters, Betty Keckler and Nancy Knoll, both of Waynesboro, Pa.; a brother, John Farrow of Greencastle, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
