Leona M. Bumbaugh

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Leona Mae Cline Bumbaugh, 74, of 12339 Old Pen Mar Road, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa., where she was a guest since Friday, Aug. 28, 1998.

Born May 3, 1924, in Fountaindale, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Evelyn L. Pittenger Cline.

She was a 1943 graduate of Washington Township High School.

During World War II, she was employed by Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro. She later worked at Waynesboro Knitting Mill.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Fountaindale, where she played the organ for 35 years. She was the spiritual leader of United Methodist Women for 20 years.

She was a member of Wayne Heights Homemakers Club and National AARP.

She was an avid postcard collector.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Creston C. Bumbaugh; a daughter, Sharon L. Cooley of Middletown, Va.; a son, Jonathan C. Bumbaugh of Waynesboro; a sister, R. Eloise Slack of Baltimore; two brothers, C. Howard Cline and Richard Cline, both of Fairfield, Pa.; a grandson; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Fountaindale. The Rev. Jeffrey Swanger will officiate. Burial will be in Fountaindale Union Cemetery, Fountaindale.

The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

It was her request to have no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 18924 Buchanan Trail East, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home Inc., Waynesboro.

Johnny E. Spoonhour

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - Johnny E. "John" Spoonhour, 48, of 11545 South Mountain Road, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 12, 1949, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of T. Joan Brown Spoonhour of Mont Alto, Pa., and the late Charles W. Spoonhour.

He was a 1969 graduate of Waynesboro (Pa.) High School.

In his early life, he worked as a structural steelworker in the Tri-State area. He also helped erect the control tower at Baltimore Washington International Airport in Baltimore. For the past 10 years, he was a welder at Frick Co., Waynesboro.

He was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Ortanna, Pa.

He was a member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association; Country Mountain Fish and Game Association, Emporium, Pa.; and Waynesboro YMCA.

He received the Certificate of Merit for Heroism, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America, for rescuing a 3-year-old from drowning in the West Branch of the Little Antietam Creek at the age of 18.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carol A. Horvath Spoonhour, whom he married July 9, 1971; a daughter, Kelly L. Spoonhour of Waynesboro; a son, Chad B. Spoonhour of South Mountain; two sisters, Ellen Bakner of Mont Alto and Doreen Hummer of Chambersburg, Pa.; and a grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Carl J. Steffen will officiate. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Ortanna.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 1095 Church Road, Ortanna, Pa. 17353; or Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, Pa. 17325.

Mary E. Helman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary E. Helman, 80, of 6474 Rowe Run Road, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 6, 1918, in Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John C. and Rhoda Shoemaker Hege.

She was involved in farming for 59 years with her husband.

She was a member of Salem United Brethren Church, where she was a member of Men and Women's Bible Class; Women's Missionary Fellowship; and was a former Sunday school teacher. She also attended Women's Bible Study Fellowship.

She was a member of Greene Township (Pa.) Farmer Advisory Council, and active in farm-related activities, including 4-H Club.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Raymond B. Helman; five  daughters, Kathryn Lemmon of Carlisle, Pa., Lois Benedick of Fort Loudon, Pa., Faye Gaugler, Ruth Ludwig and Marlene Benedict, all of Chambersburg; three sons, Robert L. Helman, Stanley Helman and Wayne E. Helman, all of Chambersburg; two sisters, Mildred Hege of Mercersburg, Pa., and Grace Martynecko of Philadelphia; two brothers, Ray Hege of Mercersburg and George Hege of Altoona, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and three brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Salem United Brethren Church. The Rev. Norman C. Hege and the Rev. John Shubert will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg; and Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Lutheran Home Care Services, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

James D. Monn

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - James D. "Jim" Monn, 86, of 444 Broad St., died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 20, 1912, in Mont Alto, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry D. and Olive E. Doyle Monn Sr.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arvilla Rock Monn, in 1983.

He received a degree in forestry from Penn State Mont Alto.

He retired in 1979 as a crane operator from Chambersburg Engineering, Chambersburg. Formerly, he worked at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, Pa.; and as the manager of Rock Top Orchards, Scotland, Pa.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chambersburg.

He was a member of Hume, McNeal, Byers AMVETS Post 224, Chambersburg; Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517, Mercersburg, Pa., and Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241, Mercersburg.

He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Kump McCleary-Monn; six  daughters, Dorrine Fickes, Erma J. Stahl and Alice L. Addlesberger, all of Chambersburg, Phyllis M. Powell of St. Thomas, Pa., Mary Lou Rock of Fayetteville, Pa., and Beverly Ann Webster of Greencastle, Pa.; three sons, James E. Monn and Lloyd E. Monn, both of Fayetteville, and John D. Monn of Chambersburg; a stepdaughter, Connie E. Keiser of Chambersburg; two stepsons, Stephen L. McCleary and Stewart "Mike" McCleary, both of Chambersburg; two sisters, Mae Kesselring of Reistertown, Md., and Helen P. Smith of Greencastle; two brothers, Howard Monn of Waynesboro and Harry D. Monn Jr. of Chambersburg; 34 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 50 Ragged Edge Road, Chambersburg. Bishop Bobby H. Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg; and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Harold E. DeShong

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Harold E. "Bub" DeShong, 78, of McConnellsburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 11, 1920, in Andover, Pa., he was the son of the late Ally E. and Ada Barton DeShong.

He was a farmer.

He was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville, Pa., where he was a Sunday school treasurer and teacher; treasurer of Harrisonville parsonage; and a Gideon and trustee.

He was secretary of PFA; Green Hill school director; honorary life member of McConnellsburg Fire Co.; and a Fulton County National Bank director.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Hockensmith DeShong, whom he married on May 29, 1940; a daughter, Ann Morgan of Waynesboro, Pa.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville. Pastor Charles Gummo and Pastor Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Siloam United Methodist Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville; and Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Franklin/Fulton American Heart Association, 225 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

I. Ruth Kennedy

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - I. Ruth Kennedy, 79, of 253 College Ave., and formerly of 157 E. McKinley St., died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at her daughter's home.

Born Feb. 28, 1919, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Mae Michaels Myers.

Her husband, Vernon P. Kennedy, died in 1996.

Early in life, she was employed as a nurse's aide at Chambersburg Hospital.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She also was a member of AARP.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda K. Heath of Chambersburg; and a granddaughter, Michele Heath of Chambersburg.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Marguerite P. Monn

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Marguerite Spencer Parncutt Monn, 87, of 1611 Clayhill Road, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Visitation will be held at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mildred I. Rockwell

QUINCY, Pa. - Mildred Irene Rockwell, 93, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 210 Park St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at the home.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

Mildred I. Rockwell

QUINCY, Pa. - Mildred Irene Rockwell, 93, a resident of Quincy Home, and formerly of Hearthstone, and 210 Park St., Waynesboro, Pa., where she lived for 88 years, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at the home.

Born Oct. 4, 1904, she was the daughter of the late John Wilson and Annis Rummel Rockwell.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for many years, and was active in many phases of church life.

She was accounting secretary at Letterkenny Army Depot for 25 years, and secretary to the superintendent of schools in Waynesboro.

She is survived by three nieces, Marie Frownfelter of Allison Park, Fla., Leslie Nilan and Stephanie Alberto, both of Boston; one nephew, Victor Koontz of Perth, Australia; grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Rockwell Koontz; and one brother, John Rockwell Jr.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Carolin Belenski will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
