Luther W. Rubeck Jr.

FORT LITTLETON, Pa. - Luther W. Rubeck Jr., 72, of Star Route North, and 9691 Corner Road, Mercersburg, Pa., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late Luther Sr. and Carrie Bowers Rubeck.

He farmed in the Mercersburg, St. Thomas, and Fort Littleton, Pa., areas, retiring from farming in October 1997. He was formerly employed by Letterkenny Army Depot.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for 27 years, retiring in 1991. His assignments included Burnt Cabins, Blue Mountain Tunnel and Somerset, Pa.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, Second Battalion, 26th Infantry in the Army of Occupation in Germany.

He was a member of James McKippen American Legion Post 561, Bishop-Raker VFW Post 655, both in McConnellsburg, Pa.; and Mercersburg (Pa.) Moose Lodge 1790.

He is survived by two sons, David W. Rubeck of Upper Strasburg, Pa., and Larry E. Rubeck of Chambersburg; two sisters, Pauline Goshorn of Chambersburg, and Martha Hykes of Greencastle, Pa.; former wives, Martha Lake Cordell Rubeck of Mercersburg, and Doris Zeger Rubeck Horton of Chambersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and one sister.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lininger Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Roy E. Brake Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg, with military graveside services conducted by Fulton Honor Guard.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, c/o Joan Goetz, 219 W. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Elmira E. Hill

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Elmira E. "Tommie" Hill, 84, of 210 S. Fayette St., who died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, resided with the Fowler family and, for the last 10 years, resided with the Rev. Gary Keefer at the same address.

William N. Johnston

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - William N. Johnston, 69, of 740 Cumberland Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chambersburg.

Born Jan. 6, 1929, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Neil G. and Flossie L. Kyle Johnston.

He was an officer with and then chief of the Chambersburg Police Department. He retired in 1984 after 32 years. He was then employed by Unitas National Bank in Chambersburg, retiring in 1994.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a Protestant.

He was a former member of Oceanside (Calif.) Lodge 381 F.&A.M. He was a member of Harrisburg Consistory, Harrisburg, Pa., and a life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 600, and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, all in Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred M. Burkholder Johnston, whom he married Jan. 6, 1963; a son, Harold V. Burkholder of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and a grandson.

Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Ray L. Kauffman will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg, with a military graveside service conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, South Central Pennsylvania, 1013 Mumma Road, Suite 303, Lemoyne, Pa. 17403; or to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Elmira E. Hill

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Elmira E. "Tommie" Hill, 84, of 210 S. Fayette St., died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Jan. 11, 1914, in Cove Gap, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Cloyd and Edith Graham Hill.

She was employed by Mercersburg Dress Factory, and later by the former J. Schoeneman Co. of Chambersburg, for a total of 43 years.

She was a member of Upton Full Gospel Church in Greencastle, Pa., where she served as pianist and secretary for 27 years.

She is survived by three sisters, Mary Hisgen of Dunedin, Fla., Lucy Snyder and Pat McCulloh, both of Mercersburg; one brother, Cranston Hill of Mercersburg.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Upton Full Gospel Church, 11435 Burkett Lane, Greencastle. The Rev. Joseph P. Roby will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg.

A viewing will be held at the church today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.

Marguerite P. Monn

Marguerite Spencer Parncutt Monn, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Aug. 29, 1911, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Clifford and Jenny Blanche Lawsey Spenser.

She was employed by Lawrey, trimming apples until her retirement in 1973.

She was a member of VFW John McLauglin Post Ladies Auxiliary in Waynesboro, Moose Club in Waynesboro, and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Greencastle, Pa.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Monn of Chambersburg, Pa.; one son, Ronnie Monn of Chambersburg; two brothers, Marshall E. Parncutt of Elkins, W.Va., and Glenn Joseph Parncutt of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc., corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Edward L. Lochstampfor will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Quincy, Pa.

Margaret A. Hawthorne

NORTHAMPTON, Pa. - Margaret Ann Hawthorne, 59, of 1315 Atlas Lane and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1939, in Sandy Hook, Md., she was the daughter of Mary M. Durbin Keyser of Hagerstown and the late Howard William Keyser.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Brethren faith.

She was formerly involved with Welcome Wagons; Newcomer's Clubs; and Women's Club of Mason City, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Hawthorne, whom she married March 31, 1962; a brother, John W. Keyser of Hagerstown; and a nephew, Ryan Keyser of Hagerstown.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. The Rev. Dean Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742; or American Diabetes Association, Maryland Affiliate, Inc., 407 Central Ave., Reistertown, Md. 21136.

Alexander R. Shifler

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Alexander Robert Shifler, infant son of Jeff L. and Kimberly Byers Shifler, of 234 High St., died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

He was born Sept. 23, 1998, in Chambersburg.

His parents are members of First Church of God, Chambersburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Rebekah R. Shifler, Kathryn E. Shifler and Kara B. Shifler, all of Chambersburg; two brothers, Kristopher L. Shifler and Chad J. Shifler, both of Chambersburg; paternal grandparents, Robert H. and Audra F. Shifler; maternal grandparents, Thomas W. and Barbra S. Stevenson; and maternal great-grandmother, Catherine G. St. Clair, all of Chambersburg.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. The Rev. Earl E. Mills will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

M. Margaret Johnston

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Margaret Johnston, 83, of 1142 Westgate Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg.

Born Sept. 3, 1915, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Rheuben E. and Mary M. Herschberger Johnston.

She was a supervisor at J. Schoeneman Co., Chambersburg, retiring in 1977 after 42 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.

She was a member of AARP Falling Spring Chapter 2840 and NARFE Chapter 1063, both of Chambersburg.

She is survived by a brother, Floyd V. Johnston of Chambersburg; and a special friend, Ray C. Hays Jr.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and on Saturday one hour prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

T. Chipman Day

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Rev. T. Chipman Day, 79, of 215 W. Seventh St., died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at his home.

Born July 25, 1919, in Kittery, Maine, he was the son of the late Louis James and Elsie Foster Barter Day.

He graduated from Beverly (Mass.) High School in 1937. He earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Boston College and a master's degree in sacred theology from Boston University School of Theology.

During seminary, he served two student churches in Massachusetts. On Oct. 14, 1945, he was ordained in First Church Wenham Church UCC. He was pastor of Orthodox Congregational Church in Littleton, Mass., served with the Massachusetts Congregational Conference as director of Youth Ministries for Massachusetts, and was pastor of United Parish of Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Mass. In 1967, he became director of religious education for Massachusetts Council of Churches in Boston. He was interim pastor of First Parish Unitarian Church of Littleton. He later was teaching minister at Mittineague UCC in West Springfield, Mass., associate minister in Christian education and parish development for Penn Central Conference of UCC, and director of Hartman Center Camp Conference and Retreat Center at Milroy, Pa.

He was the minister of visitation and parish life at Trinity United Church of Christ in Waynesboro from 1984 to 1992.

He was president of Astronomy Club of Boston University and had been in Community Changing Inc. of Boston and the Heifer Project International and Church World Service Refugee Resettlement.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Waynesboro, and the Minister of Penn Central Conference (UCC). He was active with Total Life Center at Waynesboro Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Grayce E. Day of Waynesboro; a daughter, Sara Elizabeth Dickey of Waynesboro; a son, Mark Chipman Day of Terre Haute, Ind.; two granddaughters; and a grandson.

Memorial services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, West North Street, Waynesboro. The Revs. James Williams and Horocz Seldon will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Sunday one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to Total Life Center, Waynesboro Hospital, 501 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268; or Community Changing, 14 Beacon St., Boston, Mass. 02101.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
