Remo E. Bertugli

Remo E. Bertugli, 86, of Rices Landing, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Washington Hospital.

He was born March 7, 1924, in Adah, a son of the late Attilio and Albertina Campani Bertugli.

Mr. Bertugli was a 1941 graduate of Cumberland Township High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations as a personnel sergeant major with the 558 AAA BN. He received several citations, battle stars, ribbons and a citation from the French government for being in France during the Liberation of France.

He operated Bertugli's Bar in Rices Landing from 1949 to 1967.

Mr. Bertugli worked in the Greene County Sheriff's office for 38 years; he served 12 years as sheriff and 26 years as a deputy and chief deputy combined. He was the first and only Greene County sheriff to become president of the Pennsylvania State Sheriff Association and was a life member. He also was a former Greene County Jail warden.

He worked as the Greene County Sealer of Weights and Measures from 1990 until his death.

For more than 60 yeas, Mr. Bertugli was a member of Brooks-Crago American Legion Post 816, having served as past commander. He served as a deputy commander of Greene County for the American Legion 25th District of Washington and Greene counties for eight years and served under four different district commanders. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 of Uniontown, a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Rices Landing and was past president of its Holy Name Society.

He served four years on Rices Landing Borough Council and several years as mayor, and he was assessor for Rices Landing Borough for 16 years. He served Rices Landing Boy Scout Troop 1168 in various capacities for more than 60 years. He also served Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Company for more than 60 years and had received a golden ax award for 50 years of service.

He was a member of Waynesburg Moose Lodge 461; Waynesburg Elks Lodge 757; Association of Mayors of Pennsylvania; National Sheriff's Association; Deputy Sheriff's Association of Pennsylvania; Prison Warden's Association of Pennsylvania; and the Official Registry of the Future National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C., for law enforcement members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mr. Bertugli received several awards during his life, including St. George Award from the Pittsburgh Catholic Dioceses for the Catholic Committee on Scouting; the Boy Scout Statuette Award for the Washington/Greene District; Law Enforcement Award from the Sons of the American Revolution; and he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Voters Hall of Fame for having voted more than 50 consecutive years in the general election in Pennsylvania. He was a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary Club.

He was a hunter safety instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission and was appointed to the Southwest Regional Planning Council of Pennsylvania on the Governors Justice Commission by then-Governor Milton Shapp.

For 27 years, he drove a school bus for Jefferson-Morgan School District.

On July 14, 1945, in Leek, England, he married Margaret Trafford, who died March 2, 2003.

Surviving are three children, Renetta Fatula and husband George of DuBois, Bonnie Mylan and husband Barry of Rices Landing and Chris Bertugli and wife Marjorie of Rices Landing; a daughter-in-law, Emilia Durigon Bertugli; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther Kovach and husband Vic of Rices Landing and Anita Dukate of Rices Landing.

He also leaves three special friends, Victor, Junior and Irene.

Deceased are a son, Remo C. Bertugli; two grandsons, Aaron and Joel Mylan; and two sisters, Erma Mosier and Eola Trumka.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Company; Rices Landing Boy Scout Troop 1168; or the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Margaret Shultz Brown

Margaret Shultz Brown, 101, of Waynesburg, died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born Saturday, September 12, 1908, in Waynesburg, a daughter of the late George T. Shultz and Lucy Jane Ketchum Shultz.

Mrs. Brown was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, where she had taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She enjoyed puzzle books and crossword books. While her health permitted, she enjoyed sewing and gardening and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Edgar J. Brown, died March 7, 1963.

Surviving are three daughters, Sue Reiter of Muskegon, Mich., Mary Jane McClure of Waynesburg and Bonnie Lynn Policz of Cheffield Lake, Ohio; three sons, Newt and wife Priscilla Brown of Waynesburg, Edgar John Brown of Waynesburg and Richard A. Brown, with whom she made her home; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased are four sisters, Inez Orndoff, Hazel I. Morris, Hilda S. Haines and Edith Kelley; and five brothers, Ralph Shultz, Floyd Shultz, Harold Shultz, Glenn Shultz and Morris Shultz.

The family asks that donations be made to the Brian Tennant Recovery Fund at First Federal Savings and Loan, 25 East High Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370. Brian is Mrs. Brown's great-grandson.

Helen D. Krause

Helen D. Krause, 96, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010, in Beacon Shores Nursing and Rehabilitation, Virginia Beach.

A native of Waynesburg, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Ethel DeBolt and the widow of Robert M. Krause.

Surviving are a son, Robert P. Krause and wife Debra of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a daughter, Judith Ann Krause Perdue.

Bethanie N. Orwig

Bethanie N. Orwig, 18, of Nemacolin, died unexpectedly Monday, May 10, 2010.

She was born January 7, 1992, in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of Frank D. Jr. and Sharon Nicklow Orwig.

She attended school in Carmichaels Area School District, where she enjoyed being a cheerleader and playing basketball, before moving to Florida and graduating from Cocoa High School.

She had a special love for all animals, especially cats and dogs. She was a people person, living life to its fullest. She could light up the darkest room with her smile and personality. She also loved playing and listening to music and helping with her father's band, Radio Flyerz.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her fiance, Alex Phillips of Nemacolin; two brothers, James "JR" A. Ridenour of Carmichaels and Damien C. Ridenour of Titusville, Fla.; paternal grandmother Lynn M. Foster of Carmichaels; paternal grandfather Frank D. Orwig Sr. of Pittsburgh; and maternal grandmother Dixie R. McKahan of Greensboro (Cabbage Flats). Also surviving are a niece, Bella L. Ridenour, and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

Deceased are her paternal grandfather, Ralph E. Foster, and her maternal grandfathers James Nicklow and Charles McKahan.

The family suggests donations be made to The Bethanie Orwig Memorial Fund c/o Woodforest National Bank, 405 Murtha Drive, Waynesburg, PA 15370.

Shirley May Cook

Shirley May Cook, 49, of Mather, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 14, 2010, in Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg, with her loving family by her side.

Miss Cook was born October 25, 1960, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Leonard W. "Bud" Cook and W. Dorene Kern Cook of Mather, with whom she made her home.

She attended Waynesburg public schools.

Miss Cook was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Waynesburg.

She enjoyed spending time with her church family and was loved by all who knew her.

Miss Cook will be sadly missed by her caregivers, Michelle Davis and Annie Turner.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a sister, Betty D. Anderson (Charles) of New Oxford; four brothers, David L. Cook (Stacey) of Littlestown, Paul R. Cook (Loretta) of Rogersville, James Cook (Crystal) of Kuhntown and Thomas Cook of Harrisburg; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mary Onusko Seamon

Mary Onusko Seamon, 97, Bobtown's oldest resident, passed away quietly Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Sundale Nursing Home, Morgantown, W.Va.

She was born in Beatty, October 3, 1912, a daughter of the late Mike and Elizabeth Onusko.

She was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church and Rosary Altar Society, both in Bobtown.

Mrs. Seamon was also a member of Shannopin Civic Club, also in Bobtown.

She was a fabulous self-taught cook who enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren. She also made numerous baked goods for weddings and her friends. She crocheted many beautiful afghans and was especially proud of the countless crocheted dresses and other clothing she made for fashion dolls.

Surviving are six children and their spouses, John Seamon Jr. of Crystal River, Fla., Richard Seamon of Bobtown, Barbara and Dan McGee of Allentown, Carolyn and Ron Martinelli of Antioch, Tenn., George Seamon of Palm Springs, Fla., and David and Dale Seamon of Canonsburg.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Veronica Heath of North Canton, Ohio.

Deceased are her husband of 68 years, John Seamon, who died August 29, 2000; brothers Mike, George and John Onusko; sisters Elizabeth Popernack, Ann Kritz, Peggy Benoit and Helen Onusko; and three grandsons.

Andrew Angus Gibson

Andrew Angus Gibson, 43, of Rogersville, formerly of New Freeport, died unexpectedly at 2:13 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, in Waynesburg.

He was born September 13, 1966, in Torrance, Calif., a son of Myra Joye Hildreth Gibson of Rogersville and the late Richard Alton Gibson Jr.

Mr. Gibson was a 1985 graduate of West Greene High School and was attending Waynesburg University at the time of his death.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and collecting fish for salt and fresh water aquariums. He also enjoyed listening to classical and rock music.

Mr. Gibson was a member of the Mt. Morris Sportsman's Club and was a former Boy Scout.

He was last employed as a lab technician with N.U.S. in Pittsburgh for approximately five years.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, is a brother, Richard Alton Gibson III, companion of Kristin Jones of New Freeport, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Beryle Gump

Beryle Gump, 74, of Hundred, W.Va., died Friday, May 14, 2010, in his home.

He was born March 7, 1936, in Littleton, W.Va., a son of the late Isaiah and Nona Fordyce Gump.

Mr. Gump was a farmer all of his life. He loved to raise and take care of his animals.

Surviving are a son, Johnny Gump, and a daughter, Brenda Gump, both of New Freeport; three grandchildren; a brother, Frederick Gump of New Freeport; a sister, Norma June Stevens of Mannington, W.Va.; a half sister, Margaret Miller of Littleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, deceased are his siblings, Meryle Gump, Faye Gump, Jean Gump, Lenore Mae Gump, Homer Gump, Walter Gump, George Gump, Virginia Hibbs and Sandra Kay Johnson; and two half sisters, Nellie McLaughlin and Bessie Jobes.

Dennis Franklin Shriver

Dennis Franklin Shriver, 54, of Sycamore, died Friday, May 14, 2010, in Washington Hospital, after a brief illness.

Mr. Shriver was born August 9, 1955, in Washington, a son of the late Joel L. and Betty Jean Hickman Shriver.

He retired from the maintenance department at International Paper Co. in Eighty Four and had worked at Washington Rotating Co. in Washington until he became ill.

Surviving are three sisters, Lynn Bird (Don) and Karen Harrington, both of West Union, and Patricia Lang of Washington; two brothers, Michael Shriver of West Union and Ben Shriver (Karen) of Pittsburgh; and four nieces and a nephew.

Elizabeth E. Moore

Elizabeth E. Moore, 76, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Waynesburg, died Saturday, May 1, 2010, in her home.

She was born Saturday, September 16, 1933, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late J. Raymond Moore and Margarette Page Moore.

Ms. Moore was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1951, and earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was a member of the National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Ms. Moore was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955. In 1952, Ms. Moore was honored by the U.S. government by having her portrait placed on a commemorative postage stamp honoring women of the military.

She worked as an elementary school teacher in Waterloo Community Schools for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

Surviving are a sister, Louise Summersgill of Fredericktown; a brother, J. Raymond Moore Jr. of Finleyville; and several nieces and nephews.

She also leaves her longtime friend, Hazel Worrall of Waterloo.

Deceased is a sister, Dorothy Pryor.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation.

The family asks that memorials be made to Iowa Hospice, 624 Commercial Street, Waterloo, IA 50701.

Ronald R. (Sino) Gera, 67, of Carmichaels, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, in Uniontown Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born May 8, 1942, in Uniontown, a son of the late Raymond L. and Emma Goodish Gera.

Mr. Gera grew up in Edenborn and was a 1960 graduate of German Township High School.

He served his country as a military policeman in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Mr. Gera was a retired coal miner from Maple Creek Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers of America.

He attended St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church in Carmichaels.

Mr. Gera enjoyed gardening and bird-watching.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Brown Gera; a daughter, Jennifer Gera of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Jonathan Klimek (Beverly Whipkey) of Carmichaels and Jason Klimek (Elizabeth) of Washington, D.C.; two granddaughters; and a sister, Carol Zipp (Eugene) of Lemont Furnace.
