Edward H. Roth
Edward H. Roth, 71, of Millersburg, formerly of Steelton, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at home.

He was retired from the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot, where he was a computer programer. He was a Marine Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 710, the American Legion Post 420, and the Moose Lodge 382, all of Steelton.

Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Enders of Elizabethville and Lynda Tonoff of Millersburg; a son, John Roth of Enola; a sister, Julia Strawser of Duncannon; a brother, William Roth of Landisburg; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Tuesday, June 8, at the James F. Stone Funeral Home, Inc., Steelton. Interment was at Churchville Cemetery, Oberlin. James F. Stone Funeral Home, Inc., Steelton, was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel I. Rummel
Hazel I. Rummel, 85, of Halifax died Tuesday June 1, 2004, at Spring Creek Nursing Home in Harrisburg.
Born in Jackson Twp. she was a daughter of the late John and Carrie Swab Wertz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin Rummel.

Surviving are a son Richard; a daughter Ruth Kolva; and a sister Grace Campbell all of Halifax; a half-brother Newton Wertz of Elizabethville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday June 4, at Hoover Funeral Home in Millersburg. Interment was in the Enders Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gideons International, Dauphin North Camp, P.O. Box 62 Millersburg, PA 17061. Hoover Funeral Home in Millersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Mark C. Shaffer
Mark C. Shaffer, 79, of Wiconisco, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg.
Born on February 23, 1925 in Berrysburg, he was a son of the late Daniel S. and Beaulah Deppen Shaffer.

He was retired with over 30 years of service in the United States Navy. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Berrysburg; a member of the Toastmasters; Ashlar Lodge No. 570 F&AM; American Legion Post 124 of Lykens; a 25 year member of the Lykens Minstrel and a member of the Wiconisco Fire Company.

Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Dietrich Shaffer of Wiconisco; a daughter, Mary Ellen Petrey of Wiconisco; a brother, Charles Shaffer of York; three sisters, Anna Gessner of Millersburg, Sara Howe of Harrisburg, and Elizabeth Henery of Dauphin; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, June 4, at Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville. Interment Burial with military honors was in Calvary U.M. Cemetery, Wiconisco. Hoover Funeral Homes, Inc., Elizabethville, was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Robert S. Bowman
Dr. Robert S. Bowman, 86, of Valley View, and of Pittsburgh, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at his Pittsburgh home.
Born in Valley View, June 26, 1917, he was a son of the late Ray H. and Carrie M. Starr Bowman.

He was a graduate of the former Hegins Township High School; a 1940 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. degree in Agriculture and Biological Chemistry; a 1945 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Master of Organic Chemistry; and a 1950 graduate of University of Pittsburgh with a PhD in Organic Chemistry.

He was a research chemist in the Pittsburgh area and retired in 1985 as Executive Vice President of Carnegie Mellon Institute of Research.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View; former officer of America Association for the Advancement of Science; American Chemical Society; American Institute of Chemists. He was the former president of Amberson Towers Condominium Council; an instructor for Pennsylvania's 55 Alive Program and a clarinetist for the former Westinghouse Symphony.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, V. Eugene and Russell A. Bowman.

Surviving are a brother, Richard C. Bowman of Sanborn, NY; a sister, Alice K. Bowman of Rockville, MD; nieces and nephews; and his friends including Hope Leyton from Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be held next Friday, June 4, at 5 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View, with the Rev. Carl Shankweiler officiating. Interment will be made at the convenience of the family.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association, Greater Pa. Chapter, Southwestern Regional Office, 1 Station Square Drive, Landmarks Bldg. Suite 500, Pittsburgh, PA. 15219-1122. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of arrangements.

Winfred D. Evans
Winfred D. "Bim" Evans, 89, of Williamstown, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
Born in Williamstown, January 26, 1915, he was a son of the late Harry and Emma Shomper Evans.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served at Pearl Harbor.

He was a retired carpenter with the Pennsylvania National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville. He was also retired as a self-employed carpenter.

Surviving are his wife, the former Pearl M. Carl; a daughter, Patsy A. Durkin of Tower City; a granddaughter of Michele M. Sorensen, Tower City; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 27, from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, with the Rev. Edward S. Gobrecht officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, RD Tower City. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary B. Fisher
Mary B. Fisher, 98, formerly of Pine Grove, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Evangelical Congregational Church Retirement Home, Myerstown.
Born in Pine Grove, June 9, 1905, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Mary Ann Achenbach Brommer. She was a 1923 graduate of Pine Grove High School and graduated from Kutztown University.

She was a teacher in the Pine Grove School District.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove, where she was organist for many years, and a member of Pennsylvania State Education Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rankin D., on September 23, 1988; a daughter, Ruth Neal; four brothers, Robert, Emanuel, Daniel and John A. Brommer.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Reiter and Nancy Lehr, both of Pine Grove; a son, Raymond of Pine Grove; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

Services were held Friday, May 28, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Dr. Richard W. Schoenleber officiating. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Grayam
Charles A. Grayam, 86, of Millersburg, formerly of Delray Beach, FL, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Harrisburg Hospital.
He was born on May 23, 1918 in Clendenin, WV.

He was a laborer for over 30 years for E.I. Dupont, Belle, WV, retiring in 1977. In the early 40's, he served as the chief of police in Clendenin, WV; was a member of Jodie Baptist Church, Jodie, WV; member of the Salina Lodge No. 27 AF&AM; , Malden, WV and a Scottish Rite Mason from Charleston, WV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith I. Coleman Grayam.

Surviving are a son, Kirk Schneck of Philadelphia; a daughter, Debra R. Miller of Millersburg; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at Boynton Beach Memorial Park on Friday, May 28, with Dr. Russell Cornett officiating. Interment was in Boynton Beach Memorial Park, Florida.

Donations may be made to Salem United Church of Christ, Youth Program, West Main Street, Elizabethville, PA 17023.

Eddie A. Hartman
Eddie A. Hartman, 78, of Gratz, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury.
Born in Gratz, February 10, 1926, he was a son of the late Ray and Tillie Klinger Hartman.

He was a retired truck driver from M&G; Convoy.

He was a member of Simeon Lutheran Church, Gratz; Gratz Borough Council; the Gratz Fire Company; the Gratz Old Timers; and a social member of the Lykens Township V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Bixler Hartman, who died April 2, 2001; and a son, Randy.

Surviving are four daughters, Vickie R. Welker of Mechanicsburg, Suzette C. Leitzel of Harrisburg, Jan L. Olmos of Valley View, and Ann M. Dunkelberger of Elizabethville; two brothers, Richard and Raymond Hartman, both of Gratz; and five grandchildren.

Religious services were held Sunday, May 30, at Simeon United Lutheran Church, Gratz, with the Rev. Barry Ridge officiating. Interment was in Gratz Union cemetery, Gratz.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Dauphin Unit, 1500 North 2nd St., Harrisburg, PA. James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred R. Jones
Mildred R. Jones, 91, of Donaldson, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Pottsville Hospital.
Born in Donaldson, December 22, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Agnes Betz Rose. She was a graduate of Kutztown University.

She was a retired nursing instructor from the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing. She had also been a school nurse in Frailey Township, Tremont, Pine Grove and Tower City schools.

She was a member of Zion's Lutheran Church, Donaldson, and a former member of the Pottsville Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair W., in 1987; a sister, Dorothy Davis, in 1994.

Surviving are a niece, Mildred Shatzer of Mechanicsburg; and a nephew, John C. Davis of Clarksville, Md.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 29, from Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, with the Rev. Roberta Mellen officiating. Interment was in Donaldson Community Cemetery, Donaldson. Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, was in charge of arrangements.

William J. Kitting
William J. Kitting, 76, of Lykens, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at the Harrisburg Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Moyer Kitting; three daughters, Theresa Kitting of Lykens, Marcella Roady of Williamstown and Tammy O'Donnell of Harrisburg; a step-son, Ralph Moyer of Williamstown and several grand and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing or visitation. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, has charge of arrangements.

Geraldine W. Martz
Geraldine W. Martz, 90, of Dauphin Manor, Harrisburg, formerly of Millersburg, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg.
Born June 11, 1913 in Millersburg, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Catherine Wingard.

She was employed with Johnson & Bailee Shoe in Millersburg, as a Lasting room technician, retiring in 1985, with 30 plus years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Millersburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Martz, who died November 1969; and by a daughter, Doris J. Alleman.

Surviving are a brother, Ralph Wingard of Port Orange, FL; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris J. Alleman.

Religious service were held at Reinhard Funeral Home on Friday, May 28. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg. Reinhard Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements.

Walter F. Miller
Walter F. Miller, 78, of Harrisburg, formerly of Pine Grove, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg.
Born in Pine Grove, May 21, 1926, he was a son of the late Lewis A. and Mabel Wagner Miller. He was a graduate of Pine Grove High School.

He was a Navy veteran.

He retired as a machinist for Conrail.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, Manada Hill, Grantville Veterans of Foreign Wars and Pine Grove American Legion.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Antonia Miller; a brother, Stanley W. Miller; a sister, Margaret Wolfe.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Lucretta Mease; two sons, Terry Lee of Hummelstown, and Walter C. of Worcester, Mass.; a daughter, Tammy Renee Miller, at home; a brother, Lewis of Harrisburg; a sister, Helen Adams of Pine Grove; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, May 29, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Terrence Jansma officiating. Interment was in Suedberg Church of God Cemetery, Pine Grove. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge arrangements.
