Marion R. Fitting
Marion R. Fitting, 74, of Tremont, died Saturday, September 13, 2003, in Pottsville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 17, from Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th Street. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery at Ebenezer.

Jacob H. Frederick Sr.
Jacob H. Frederick Sr., 81, of Williamstown, died Sunday, September 21, 2003, at York Terrace Nursing Home, Pottsville.

Born in Williamstown, he was a son of the late Samuel and Melinda Frederick.
He retired from the former Johnson and Bailey Shoe Factory, Millersburg.

He was a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church, a former member of its church choir, member of Williamstown American Legion Post 239 and Liberty Hose Company No. 1, Williamstown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary C. Schaeffer, who died in 1989; and a stepson, George Schaeffer, who died in 2003.

Surviving are two sons, Jacob Jr. and Richard, both of Williamstown; two daughters, Anna Mae Troutman and Doris Fox, both of Williamstown; a step-daughter, Mary Reed of Millersburg; a sister, Anna Jones of Williamstown; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery, Williamstown. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Williamstown, is in charge of arrangements.

Sandra F. Kroh Freeman
Sandra F. Kroh Freeman, 62, of Tremont, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Lebanon, December 14, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Pearl Kroh Hoke.

She had been employed as a home geriatric nurse’s aid, and previously worked for the former Canoe, Pine Grove, and Kraftec, Auburn. She was a member of Zion’s Lutheran Church, Donaldson.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Sadie Kroh.

Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Clarence Freeman; two sons, Randall S. of Deturksville, and Kevin R. of Tower City; a daughter, Lori Somers of Tremont; two sisters, Marie Hoke of Donaldson, and Janice Gately of Primrose; two brothers, Mark Hoke of Fredericksburg, and Edward Hoke of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 20, at the Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, with the Rev. Ronald Heim officiating. Interment was in the German Reformed cemetery, Tremont. Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, was in charge of arrangements.

Jean E. Houtz
Jean E. Houtz, 75, of Donaldson, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, in Reading.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Tremont.

Surviving are her children, Pamela Barnhart, Sandra Juritsko, Jeanie Wynn, John, Jr. and Gary T.; a sister and a brother.

Dimon Funeral Homes, Inc., Tower City, is in charge of arrangements.

Steve Kafora
Steve Kafora, 51, of Millersburg, died Thursday, September 18, 2003.

He was a son of the late Mary Kafora, who died on April 19, 2002.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was employed by Metal Industries, Millersburg, in the plastic division.

He was a former member of Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, Williamstown.

Surviving are his wife of 19 years, the former Katherine L. Feidt; three sons, Kevin E. and Kyle L., both at home, and Steve Frew of Hegins; a brother, Joseph of Tower City; and a sister, Anna Mae Adley of Tower City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 23, from the chapel at Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City. Interment will full military honors was in Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic cemetery, Williamstown. Dimon Funeral Homes Inc., Tower City, was in charge of arrangements.

Urela R. Myers
Urela R. Myers, age 90, of Williamstown, died Thursday, September 18, 2003, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, social member of American Legion Post No. 239, Williamstown Senior Citizens, and Williams Valley Senior Citizens, Tower City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin C. "Rip" Myers and a daughter, Vaughn D. L. Miller.

Surviving are two daughters, Marlyne L. Coles of Williamstown and Joan E. Brooks of Belton, Missouri; a sister, Sylva S. Brown of Lebanon; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at the convenience of the family at Fairview cemetery, with the Rev. Marleen E. Griffith-Stull officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Williamstown Ambulance Association, 204 South West Street, Williamstown, PA 17098. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, was in charge of arrangements.

LaMar C. Pfeiffer
LaMar C. Pfeiffer, DMD, 83, of Naples, Florida, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in the Naples Community Hospital, Naples.

Born in Lykens, June 4, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Vera Mae Cooper Pfeiffer.

He graduated from Porter Township High School, Tower City. He received his undergraduate degree from Catawba, Salisbury, NC in 1942. He received his dental degree from Northwestern University, Chicago, IL in 1945.

He started private practice in dentistry in the Marshall Fields Building in Chicago, IL. He opened a dental clinic in Belvidere, IL in 1955, retiring in 1982.

He served as Captain in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Lorraine Pfeiffer Brown.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Helen "Betty" Bell Pfeiffer; two sons, Larry L. Pfeiffer of Valley Farms, AZ and Charles A. "Cap" Pfeiffer of Conway, NC; sister, Melba Keen of Middletown; two grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Tower City.

Matinchek & Daughter Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Middletown, was in charge of local arrangements.

Daniel H. Runkle

Daniel H. Runkle, 73, of Halifax, died Saturday, September 20, 2003, at the Tremont Nursing Home, Tremont.

Born in Spring Glen on August 10, 1930, he was a son of the late Chester and Pauline Schwalm Runkle.

He was a retired machine operator for Quaker Oats, Shiremanstown. He was a member, past council member and past treasurer of the Matamoris Community Church, Halifax. He had memberships with the Twin Valley Lion's Club; and Millersburg F & AM, No. 364.

He was a former coach and was active with the Halifax Little League and Teener League baseball programs.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce G. Bressler Runkle; a son, Brian D., of White Plains, NY; a daughter, Debra J. Runkle of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers, James Runkle of Spring Glen and Charles Runkle of Valley View; a sister, Dorothy Runkle of Harrisburg; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at his church on Tuesday, September 23, with the Rev. Phillip Kneier officiating. Interment was in the Christ U.C.C. cemetery, Fountain.

Memorial donations may be made to his church at 3267 Peter's Mountain Road, Halifax, PA 17032, or to the Halifax Fire Co., P.O. Box Q, Halifax, PA 17032. Hoover Funeral Home, Inc., Millersburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Jean G. Sandherr
Jean G. Sandherr, 81, of Pine Grove, formerly of Pottsville, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg.

Born in Pottsville, March 14, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Claude F. and Catherine Quinn Lawrence. She was a 1940 graduate of Pottsville High School.

She was employed at Pottsville Area High School in food service.

She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church, Pottsville, and attended Manbeck Evangelical Congregational Church, Rock.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Kurtz.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Donald J.; a son, Dr. Robert L. of Pottsville; two daughters, Susan C. Beveridge of Pottsville, and Donna J. Kurtz of Pine Grove; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, September 20, from Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, with the Rev. Lance Mills officiating. Interment was in Manbeck Evangelical Congregational cemetery, Pine Grove.

Ronald N. Slotterback
Ronald Nelson Slotterback, 64, died Friday, September 19, 2003, at home.

Born in Barry Township, January 15, 1939, he was a son of the late Nelson and Alma Wedde Slotterback.

He was a 1957 graduate of the former Hegins Twp. High School. He was a retired self-employed farmer. He was a member of St. John’s “Kimmel’s” United Church of Christ, Ashland.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Slotterback, who died in 1997.

Surviving are a companion, Carrie V. Koons, with whom he resided; and several cousins.

Services were held Tuesday, September 23, at Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, with the Rev. Harry Clark officiating. Interment was in St. John’s cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s “Kimmel’s” United Church of Christ, Ashland, 1263 Deep Creek Rd., Ashland, PA 17921. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Garrett Still
Mary Garrett Still, 77, of Lewisburg, formerly of Herndon, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in the Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.

She was formerly the supervisor of Admissions at Sunbury Community Hospital and had retired as a supervisor from IBM Processing Equipment, and was a member of United Church of Christ, Herndon.

Surviving are her husband, Kermit H. Still; two sisters, Joann E. Garrett and Emma Jane Kimmel, both of Millersburg; a brother, Raymond E. Garrett of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Thursday, September 18, in Herndon cemetery, with the Rev. Jerome W. Haupt officiating.

The W. Orville Kimmel Funeral Home, Inc., was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2290 Forest Hills Drive, Suite 18, Harrisburg, PA 17112.

Connie L. Wirt
Connie L. Lins Wirt, 63, of Muir, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in the Harrisburg Hospital.
She was retired from Pine Grove School District, where she was a teacher for 33 years. She was a graduate of Harrisburg Area Community College with an Associates degree in Education and Kutztown University, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degree. She also was President of Anthracite Concert Association for 10 years, a member of Pottsville Business and Professional Women's Club, and a former member of Coalcrackers Polka Association and County Schuylkill Ceili Dancers. She enjoyed traveling and had visited all of Europe, Asia, South America and most of the United States.

Surviving are her companion, Thomas J. Gilbert; daughter, Marla W. Myrick of Springfield, VA; two sisters, Barbara L. Swab of Allentown and Sharon M. Stilo of Enola; three granddaughters; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, September 20 in the Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Tower City. Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery, Tower City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Capital Region, 3211 N. Front Street, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Neumyer Funeral Home, Inc., was in charge of arrangements.
