Alvin W. Schnoke
Alvin W. Schnoke, 92, of Pine Grove, died Saturday, August 16, 2003, at home.
Born in Pleasant Valley, Pine Grove Township, August 13, 1911, he was a son of the late Richard and Alvena Gehres Schnoke.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He had been a presser at the former Fox-Knapp Manufacturing, Pine Grove.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur; a sister, Ethel McMillan.
Surviving are three brothers, Norman, Ralph and Earnest, all of Pine Grove area; two sisters, Clara Cooper and Dorothy "Toots" Herring, both of Pine Grove area; a companion, Betty Schwartz, with whom he resided.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, from H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove. The Rev. Dr. Richard W. Schoenleber will officiate. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, is handling arrangements.

Kenneth S. Shoop
Kenneth S. Shoop, died Sunday, August 10, 2003. He was former resident of Halifax for 81 years, before moving to the Pittsburgh area.
Born in Enterline, March 27, 1916, he was a son of the late Elmer H. and Vada Saltzer Shoop.

He graduated from Halifax High School in 1934; had been self-employed for many years; and was well-known as the "Action Battery Man". Later, he was an employee of TRW and a local real estate sales associate until his retirement. He was a member of the former Union Church in Powells Valley and a member of Halifax United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Leaphy Acker Shoop; five sisters, and three brothers.

Surviving are a daughter, Tana Grunberg; a sister, Sara Shoop; two brothers, James and Lee Shoop; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews.

Services were held Thursday, August 14th, at the Halifax United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Barto officiating. Interment was in Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elevator Fund of Halifax United Methodist Church or by the cemetery Association of Union Church for perpetual care of the Elmer Shoop family members, c/o Paul D. Shoop, Enterline Road, Halifax, 17032. Bash-Nied Funeral Home, Delmont, was in charge of arrangements.

Alberta E. Antes
Alberta E. "Birdie" Antes, age 89, formerly of Williamstown, died Saturday, August 9, 2003, at Susquehanna Lutheran Village, Millersburg.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church; Lutheran Church Women; former choir member; participated in many church activities; was a social member of American Legion Post No. 239; and a former cub scout den mother.
Born in Williamstown, February 8, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Calvin S. and Rose Eva Freeze Myers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira "Pete" Jacob Antes.

Surviving are two sons, Charles C. Antes of Lykens and Ira R. Antes of Elizabethville; a brother, Arthur Myers of Glen Burnie, MD; two sisters, Florence Bolton of Dundalk, MD and Geraldine Maurer of Elizabethville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, at the John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, with the Rev. Marleen Griffith-Stull officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery, Tower City. Viewing will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church, East & Vine Streets, Williamstown, 17098 or to Susquehanna Lutheran Village, 990 Medical Road, Millersburg, 17061. John R. Shultz Funeral Home, Lykens, is in charge of arrangements.

James Broeckel
James "Jimmy Angel" Broeckel, 78, of Halifax, died Friday, August 8, 2003, at his home.

Born February 25, 1925 in Cleveland, he was a son of the late William and Mary Stephamy Broeckel.
He was a retired Truck Driver for Fruehauf Corporation after 32 years, where he was a former union steward; was a member of Teamsters Local 776, where he was active in D.R.I.V.E.; was a Road Manager for many bands; and was a volunteer for the Halifax Area Ambulance and Rescue Association.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joshua.

Surviving are his wife, Marlene D. Slesser Broeckel; his former wife, Mary J. Rollins Broeckel; five sons, James S. and David M., both of Vermillion, OH, John of Sheffield Lake, OH, Kenneth M., of Harrisburg and William G., of Halifax; three daughters, Sharen L. Seiwerth of Chicago, Karen S. Lopez of Atlanta, GA and Denise D. Broeckel of Halifax; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15, at Zimmerman-Auer Funeral Home, 4100 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewings will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to PinnacleHealth Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, 17110 or to the Halifax Area Ambulance and Rescue Association.

Arlene E. Buffington
Arlene E. Buffington, 82, of Sacramento, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Pottsville Hospital.

Born in RR1 Pitman, December, 12, 1920, she was a daughter of the late J. Lloyd and Katie E. Snyder Reitz. She was a 1939 graduate of Pine Park High School, Leck Kill.

She had worked for various local businesses.

She was a member of St. Paul's UCC, and the Ladies Guild of the church, Tri-Valley Senior Citizens, Valley View, and the Sacramento Fire Company Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S., who on July 28, 1964.
Surviving are two sons, James and David, both of Sacramento; a daughter, Mary Martinez of Placentia, Calif.; three sisters, Dorothy Hoffner of Hegins, Jean Hess of Elizabethville area, and Lillian Kissinger of Gratz; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Tuesday, August 12, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sacramento, with the Rev. Francis Whitehurst officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's United Church of Christ cemetery, Sacramento. Stephen R. Rothermel Funeral Home, RR1 Klingerstown, was in charge of arrangements.

Keith D. Cooper
Keith D. Cooper, 62, of Halifax, died Monday, August 11, 2003, at home.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late R. Stanley and Marian Deitz Cooper. He was a retired Vice President for the former White Shield pharmacies and was co-proprietor with his wife of Memories of Yesteryear antique shop in Halifax. He was a member of Halifax United Methodist Church.

He was a lifetime member of the Halifax historical society; former Halifax Boro councilman; former Board of Director at Community Banks; former member of Halifax Christmas decorations committee; member of Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce and the Silverstragglers of Harrisburg North G.C. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline C. Mayhew Cooper; a son, Keith T. of Halifax; a daughter, Teresa Lonardi of Elizabethtown; a sister, Barbara Cooper of Harrisburg; four grandchildren; a niece and two nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, August 14, at 10 a.m. at Halifax United Methodist Church, 105 Wind Hill Drive. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Hoover Funeral Home, Elizabethville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Prostrate Society, P.O. Box 870, Hanover, MD 21076, or to Hospice of Central PA, 98 S. Enola Drive, P.O. Box 266, Enola, 17025-0266. Hoover Funeral Home, Elizabethville, is in charge of arrangements.

Emmett L. Emerich
Emmett L. Emerich, 91, of Pine Grove, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

Born in Wayne Township, June 23, 1912, he was a son of the late Allen H. and Mary Manbeck Emerich.

He retired from the maintenance department of Blue Mountain School District.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Summer Hill, Friedensburg Fire Company, Summit Station Fire Company and Liberty Fire Company, Schuylkill Haven.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Marie Luckenbill, who died in 1967; a brother, Newton; a sister, Carolyn Schneck.

Surviving are a daughter, Doris Knoll, Pine Grove; nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday, August 6, from Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., Schuylkill Haven, with the Revs. Frederick I. Fisher and Jeff Byerly officiating. Interment was in Reedsville cemetery, Wayne Township.

Beatrice J. Gahres
Beatrice J. Gahres, 80, formerly of Pine Grove, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at ManorCare Health Care, Lebanon.

Born in Pine Grove, January 23, 1923, she was a daughter of late Merritt W. and Florence S. Brown Kembel.

She had been employed as a textile worker for the former Gold Mills Inc., Pine Grove.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D.; a son, Richard D. Jr.; a great-grandson, Daniel J. Barr; a sister, Bertha P. Aungst; two brothers, George W. and Willard M. Kembel.

Surviving are three daughters, Frances Heinbach, Judith Neidlinger and Linda Barr, all of the Pine Grove area; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the convenience of the family, with Dr. Richard W. Schoenleber officiating. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Pine Grove. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

James M. Grumley
James Mike Grumley, 42, of Halifax, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at his home.

Surviving are his wife, Dawne Miller Grumley of Halifax; his mother, Doris Grumley of Etters; a step-son, Jeremy Herb of Herndon; two brothers, Ken Grumley of ID, and James W. Grumley III of NY; four sisters, Kim Moore of AL, Pam Grumley of Etters, Sherri Mckelvey of Dover, Tammy Mitzel of York; two half-sisters, Janet Monroe of NY and Jackie Bancroft of NY; two granddaughters; six nephews and three nieces.
Services were held on Thursday, August 7, from Hoover Funeral Home, Elizabethville.

Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Deborah A. Howell
Deborah A. Howell, 40, of Pine Grove, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at home.

Born in Pottsville, September 13, 1962, she was a daughter of Edward and Roseanna Neal Ness of Pine Grove. She was a 1980 graduate of Pine Grove Area High School and attended Central Pennsylvania College, Summerdale, for computer programming.
She had been employed as an office manager for Ness Oil Co., Pine Grove.

She was a member of Jacob's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward N. Ness.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, James G. Howell; a son, Keeton E. of Pine Grove.

All services were held at the convenience of the family. H.L. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Pine Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

Terry F. Knapp
Terry F. Knapp, 60, of Pine Grove, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Manor Care, Pottsville.
Born in Tremont, January 6, 1943, he was a son of Raymond Knapp Sr. of Tremont, and the late Gloria Wolfe Knapp.

He worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Office of General Services for over 40 years. He was also the former owner of movie theaters in Tremont and Pine Grove. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Tremont.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his step-mother, Joan Knapp of Tremont; a sister, Marsha Jones of Tremont; a brother, Raymond Knapp, Jr. of Schuylkill Haven; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 8, from the Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, with the Rev. Mary Lou Eckels officiating. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Tremont. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 2, Tremont, 17981. Minnig-Berger Funeral Home, Tremont, was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas F. Meehan
Thomas F. Meehan, 59, of Williamstown, died Friday, August 8, 2003, at his home.
Born in Williamstown October 21, 1943, he was a son of the late John and Ruth Meehan.
He was a disabled Veteran, serving in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was a 1963 graduate of the former Williamstown High School. He was of the Catholic Faith and a member of the Williamstown American Legion No. 239.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Linda L. Witmer Meehan; a daughter, Amy L. at home; a sister, Sandra Wert of Tower City; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, August 12, from Ft. Indiantown Gap National cemetery. Dimon Funeral Homes, Inc., Williamstown, was in charge of arrangements.
