Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Rankin E. Mellott

HARRISONVILLE, Pa. - Rankin Eugene Mellott, 85, of Harrisonville, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at his home.

Born Sept. 3, 1912, in Needmore, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell C. Mellott and Mary Anna Myers Mellott.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa., in 1974. He had worked in coal mines in the Broad Top, Pa., area. He was a mechanic. He had worked a number of years for Green Thumb in Fulton County, Pa.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Manning Mellott, whom he married on Aug. 7, 1946; one son, Russell E. Mellott of Harrisonville; one brother, Ray D. Mellott of Harrisonville; two granddaughters; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville. The Rev. Frank Heidler will officiate. Burial will be in Sideling Hill Christian Cemetery, R.D., Needmore.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

M. Dice Statler

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Dice Statler, 77, of Luther Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Luther Ridge.

Born July 19, 1920, in Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late John M. and O. Ruth Dice Statler.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. He was a former Sunday school teacher, council member and was in charge of the church cemetery for more than 30 years.

He was a member of George Washington Lodge 143 F.&A.M.; Junior O.U.A.M., Marion, Pa. He was a former director of F&M Trust Co. and the Maryland Milk Producers and served on the Holly Milk Board.

Engaged in dairy farming all his life, he received a Master Farmer Award in 1972, and later received the National Soil Conservation Award.

He founded and was past president of Chambersburg Farm Service. He was active in Franklin County Extension and was a member of Guilford Township School Authority.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Keefer Statler; one daughter, Susan Riley of Newtown Square, Pa.; one brother, Ronald K. Statler of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, Marion. The Rev. Warren Heintzelman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Donna M. Shannon

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Donna M. Shannon, 57, of 1855 Criders Church Road, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at her home.

Born Feb. 6, 1940, in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Rheuben and Nancy Guthrie Johnston.

She had been employed by the former Maria's Hoagie Shop and Stanley Co. until 1967.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Augsburg Class.

She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Shannon; one daughter, Tammy Smith of Chambersburg; three sons, Robert B. Shannon, Jerry L. Shannon and Michael E. Shannon, all of Chambersburg; two sisters, Helen Lake of Chambersburg and Peggy Meyers of Shippensburg, Pa.; three brothers, William Johnston of Fayetteville, Pa., Robert Johnston of Chambersburg and Rheuben Johnston of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Neal O. Hively will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Edna V. Kling

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Edna V. Kling, 78, of RR 2, Box 61B1, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Aug. 3, 1919, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lewis R. and Mary Elizabeth Smith Potts.

She was a waitress and assistant manager at Howard Johnsons Path Valley Restaurant prior to retiring.

She attended McConnellsburg Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by her husband, Wendell Kling, whom she married on March 24, 1955, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at McConnellsburg Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Belvy White and David Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Shade Gap, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the church today from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Tuesday. The church will be open today from 4 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg.

Bertie G. Mellott

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Bertie G. Mellott, 94, a resident of Skilled Care Facility of Fulton County Medical Center, and of RR 1, Box 195, Needmore, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at the center.

Born Aug. 10, 1903, in Indian Valley, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joshua L. and Mellie F. Akers Kenley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Webster Mellott, in 1991.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by one daughter, Virginia Mellott of Needmore; one grandson, Larry Mellott of Needmore; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, one half-sister and one half-brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Roger Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday. The funeral home will be open Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Grace C.H. Portner

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Grace Cecilia Horan Portner, 87, a resident of Michael Manor Nursing Home, and formerly of Sabillasville, Md., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg.

Born March 10, 1910, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Joseph William and Ada Elizabeth Bailey Horan.

She was formerly employed by Claire Frock in Thurmont, Md.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Marion Portner, a resident of Michael Manor, whom she married on Dec. 25, 1929; four  daughters, Ada Wolfe and Carol Portner Dingle, both of Sabillasville, Mary Portner Davis of Gettysburg, and Glenda Portner Heredia of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Joseph Portner and John Portner, both of Thurmont; two brothers, Joseph Horan and Harry Horan, both of Baltimore; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Albert Leroy Portner and James Edward Portner.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The Rev. Leo R. Tittler will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 1 to 9 p.m.

Eugene A. Dumer

WATERFALL, Pa. - Eugene A. Dumer, 66, of Box 65, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1930, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Louis and Marie Strominger Dumer.

He retired from IBEW Local 24 Electrical Union in Baltimore, where he worked as an electrician.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, McConnellsburg, Pa.

He was a member of Huntingdon-Bedford-Fulton Area on Aging Advisory Council; St. Stephen's Seniors Club; and IBEW Local 24 in Baltimore.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Porter Dumer; two stepsons, Leo Jones of Three Springs, Pa., and Tom Cochran of Waterfall; one sister, Marie Hunt of Pasadena, Md.; one step-granddaughter; and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Frederick Dumer.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, McConnellsburg. The Rev. Joseph Orr will officiate. Burial will be in Holly Hills Cemetery, Baltimore.

The family will receive friends at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m., where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m. The funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's Catholic Church Building Fund, 303 Lincoln Way East, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233.

Chester B. Harshman

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Chester Basore Harshman, 85, of 7460 Wayne Highway, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born June 21, 1912, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Jacob Benedict and Elizabeth Rebecca McFerren Harshman. He lived in Waynesboro his entire life.

He was a farmer and farmed his own land in Quincy Township, Pa., all of his life until retiring in 1979.

He was a life member of Fetterhoff Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one brother, Roy N. Harshman of Waynesboro.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie M. Harshman, Ada E. Helman and Mary Vesta Harshman.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc., corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Robert Basom will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

He requested the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Quincy United Methodist Home, Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 217, Quincy, Pa. 17247.
