Harriet Geddings Ross
Harriet Geddings Ross, 60, wife of Johnny Q. Ross III, died Friday, December 21, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of Eunice Timmons Geddings and the late Charlie Geddings.

She was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Polar Bear Laundry and Cleaners.

Survivors besides her husband include her mother of Sumter; a son, Johnny “Jay” Ross IV of Sumter; a daughter, Dottie Landry of Columbia; two brothers, Joe Geddings of Rome, Ga., and David Geddings of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren, John Q. Ross V, Victoria Ross, Nicholas Landry and Joshua Landry.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Wedgefield Baptist Church with the Revs. Darryl Davis and B.J. Drayton officiating. Burial followed in Wedgefield Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were the deacons of Wedgefield Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation, c/o Wedgefield Baptist Church, P.O. Box 265, Wedgefield, S.C. 29168.

Daniel L. Rhodes
Daniel Jeff Rhodes, 52, died Friday, December 14, 2001.

Born Dec. 28, 1948, in Walterboro, he was the son of Thomas Lee Rhodes and Mae Crosby Rhodes.

He was retired from the S.C. Department of Social Services and was a member of Metropolitan Community Church in Columbia. He was a graduate of Wofford College.

Survivors besides his father of Edisto Island include a brother, Thomas Lee Rhodes Jr. of Summerton; and a sister, Janice Rhodes Pearce of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George Herman Rhodes.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church near Summerton.

Memorials may be made to Metropolitan Community Church, P.O. Box 8753, Columbia, S.C. 29202, or Clarendon Hall School, Duke Street, P.O. Box 608, Summerton, S.C. 29418.

Ruby S. Rigby
MADISON, Ga. - Ruby Neel Strawhorn Rigby, 95, widow of Charles S. Rigby Jr., died Friday, January 4, 2002, at McGeary House in Madison, Ga.

Born May 9, 1906, in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Warren Carter Strawhorn and Ella Rose McKellar Strawhorn. She attended Winthrop College and was a member of Madison Presbyterian Church in Medlin, Ga.

Survivors include two daughters, Rose Ann Rigby Weaver of Madison, Ga., and Susan Ellen Rigby Staples of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Charles Samuel Rigby III of Haymarket, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in Manning Cemetery with Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Memorials may be made to Madison Presbyterian Church or the Presbyterian Church of Manning.

James Anthony
James “Troy” Anthony, 51, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 17, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Lucille Kennedy Anthony and the late Buck Anthony. He attended Clarendon County and Philadelphia, Pa., public schools. He was employed with Sumter Spinning, Punches Seafood and Gold Kist.

Survivors besides his mother include six sisters, Sally Adams of Philadelphia, Pa., Nora Anthony, Mary Lewis, Brendell Moses, Brenda James and Julia Kennedy of Sumter; a nephew whom he raised as his son, Maxwell Bennett of Washington, D.C.; a stepbrother, James Anthony of Lynchburg; five aunts; three uncles; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Emma M. Brock
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Emma Mae Brock, 53, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1948, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Davis Brock Sr. and Emma Smith Brock. She was raised by her grandmother, the late Louisa Postell Smith. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In 1987, she moved to Thomasville, N.C., and later to High Point, where she spent most of her adult life. In her youth, she became a member of St. John Baptist Church in Silver. After moving to Thomasville, she became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Friendship Church. She was employed as a cook.

Survivors include three sons, Ben Brock and Kernelle Brock of Thomasville and Tracy Leon Brock of High Point; four brothers, Elmore Brock of Baltimore, Md., Archie Brock and David Brock Jr. of Summerton and the Rev. Nate Brock of Sumter; three sisters, Maggie Robinson of Summerton, Betty Ann Johnson of Columbia and Patricia Pierce of Washington, D.C.; seven stepbrothers and stepsisters, Doris Hardison, Cheryl Williams, James Green and Hattie Green of Wilmington, N.C., Anthony Green of Charlotte, N.C., Daniel Green of Odessa, Fla., and Ruth Peoples of Houston, Texas; her stepmother, Sally Green of Wilmington; a grandchild; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Lee Brock.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church in Thomasville with the Rev. Dr. H.N. Goode, pastor, officiating.

Rev. Neolis Johnson Jr.
The Rev. Neolis Johnson Jr., 41, died Thursday, January 10, 2002, at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 8, 1961, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Neolis Johnson Sr. and Fannie Mae Montgomery Johnson. He was a 1979 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies form Morris College. He also attended Allen University and Erskine Theology Seminary, majoring in Christian Education. In his youth, he joined Santee AME Church in Summerton. He was previously employed by Lean on Me Health Care Service. He was also currently serving as pastor of St. Peter AME Church and Mt. Pisgah AME Church of the Wateree District.

Survivors include a brother, Stacey Johnson of Summerton; two sisters, Daisy Lee Bennett of Summerton and Loretta Sumpter of Santee; and several aunts and uncles.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Santee AME Church with the Rev. Silas Spann officiating and the Revs. S.R. Miott, J.A. McDonald, Dorothy White, Joseph Postell, Pastor Elaine Bennett and Elder George A. Ashford assisting.

Ethel J. Smith
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Ethel Jane Smith, 69, died Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at her home in Brooklyn.

Born Sept. 5, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Handy Smith and Margaret Lillie Canty Smith. She attended Clarendon County public schools. Prior to moving to Brooklyn, she was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton.

Survivors include two sons, William Lee Smith and James Smith of Brooklyn; two daughters, Runnett Tindal and her husband, Cleophes, of Brooklyn and Theresa Robinson of Staten Island, N.Y.; two brothers, Deacon Henry Smith and his wife, Theola, of Manning and Bill Smith of Miami, Fla.; a sister, Mamie Fludd of Baltimore, Md.; an adopted relative, George Berry of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Thursday in Taw Caw Baptist Church Cemetery in Summerton with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating.

Lizzie B. Woods
Lizzie Brown Woods, 87, widow of McSwain Woods, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 20, 1914, in Greeleyville, she was the daughter of the late James Frazier Brown and Janie Whack Bradley. She was the stepdaughter of the late Benjamin Bradley. She attended Williamsburg County public schools and was previously a member of Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, where she served on the senior choir and program committee. She moved to Norwalk, Conn., and joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the missionary society, a deaconess, a member of the gospel choir and president of the pastor aide board. After moving to Alcolu, she joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church, where she was a member of the missionary society and pastor’s aide board. She was also a member of Jordan Chapel Order of Easter Star Lodge No. 237.

Survivors include a son, Charles Woods of South Norwalk, Conn.; two grandsons whom she raised, Edward Brogdon of Charlotte, N.C., and Mackroy Brogdon of Alcolu; a daughter, Dorothy W. Evins of the home; eight grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Brogdon; and four brothers, Chester Bradley, Eddie Bradley, Willie Brown and George Brown.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Nebo Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Albertus Smiling and Minister Jonathan Anderson assisting. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ena E. Boykin
Sumter - Ena Elise Boykin, 95, died Monday, February 10, 2003, in Hopewell Healthcare.

Born Aug. 24, 1907, in Bishopville, she was the daughter of the late J.F. and Aliza Belvin Boykin. She was a retired secretary for Sumter Chamber of Commerce and Attorney Wendell Levi, and was former secretary for Lawson’s Drug Store and Stokes Exterminating Service. She was an honorary member of Sumter Business & Professional Women’s Club, and was presented outstanding member in 1965. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a nephew, Lerue Medlin and wife, Rosa, of Sumter; and a great-nephew.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Bishopville with the Rev. Bruce A. Sayre officiating.

Leroy Braxton
Dalzell - Leroy Braxton, 50, husband of Kay Singletary Braxton, died Thursday, February 6, 2003, in Tuomey Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1952, in Lane, S.C., he was the son of Eloise Braxton Cutter and the late Carl Cutter. He attended Home Branch Church of God of Prophecy. He was a volunteer equipment assistant for the Manning High School Monarch football team.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and mother of Manning include a stepdaughter, Sabrina Timmons of Sumter; five sisters, Barbara Garrett and husband, Randy, Pay Lyons and husband, Dennis, Maryann Cutter and husband, Mitch, Suzi Judy and husband, Tony, of Manning, and Minnie Crum and husband, Tony, of Four Oaks, N.C.; three brothers, Frank Braxton of Lake City, Jerry Braxton and wife, Edith, of Dillon, and the Rev. Jessie Brock and wife, Georgia, of Benson, N.C.; a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Kampf.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jessie Brock officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Bobby Lyons, Chris Lyons, Daniel Brock, Coach John Franklin Thames, Gene Braxton and Archie Braxton.

Memorials may be made to Manning High School Monarch Football Team, 2155 Paxville Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102.
